I’m kind of a jack of all trades and you may or may not know me from my other two RUclips channels: Ohio Railroad Productions, (where you can find my model train, train watching, and other railroad videos at.) & Tractors and Tillers Galore (where you can find all of my small engine repair videos at)
This is my 3rd and probably final channel where you can find everything else about me. From the outdoors, guns, farming, fishing, hunting, & pretty much every other passion of mine. I like to keep everything on this channel straight and to the point hence, the lack of a decent channel intro, unlike my other channels.
I hope everybody enjoys the content that I provide on this channel and please feel free to check out my other channels linked below…

French Gras Cavalry Carbine Unboxing! This video is a little delayed but anyways. This is the un-boxing of my newly acquired Gras Cavalry Carbine from RTI. This was the last one in stock at the time. Overall, very happy with how good it turned out to be.

Harrington & Richardson 20 Gauge Model 1908?
You don’t need to strip to bare metal…. Just boil in distilled water and card it…. It’ll convert the existing rust into bluing….. it’s easier and cleaner and cheaper than stripping it down… and using cold blue…… That excessive dark color is actually a combination of dirt and the wood drying out…. If you give it a few coated of BLO and scrub it with a scotchbrite pad… you’ll get a really nice deep red color usually. I bout a B grade 87/15 about 6 months ago and it came 100% complete no broken or missing parts… and a good bore. Also AOI stamped and Had the cleaning rod I want a 70/87 but $400 plus shipping is steep considering the description they gave… I’m dead set not to get a b grade because I want the thing to have sights….. I did just pickup a B grade m95 mannlicher long rifle for $150 from RTI 99% complete… rear sight slider is missing ( as expected) Everything else was present All the screw heads were in great shape Extractor and safety were there No broke sling swivels Bore is good the metal of the rifle will clean up really nice The stock however was a late war ELM stock. And when elm dries out… it shrinks drastically because it the large grain structure…. The stock is usable but it was in rough shape … the butt looked like a raisin I steamed it and soaked it in linseed oil for a while and it swelled a bit…. I scraped it to get it smooth-ish… it turned out OK. BUT I WILL BE RESTOCKING IT…. The original stock was AOI stamped and then an Amharic “police” stamp was done over that I’ve also got 2 m1 garands the “original condition” ones for 800 that didn’t go to James river armory to be molested and charged $1700 for …. Both of them are in great shape and came with 3 en bloc clips each. I’ve also got a Remington m1917.. from RTI on layaway… I didn’t buy it from RTI found it in a local gun shop But it is a RTI inter ordinance marked rifle…. In fantastic shape. With a great bore and 1918 dated barrel and receiver made 2 months apart…
I’ll have to keep that in mind when I restore this thing, and good to see you’ve had good luck with RTI as well. I’ve been considering getting one of their M1 Grands in the future when they offer the $800 ones againat least.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 they said they were having a hard time getting the state dept to approve the m1s for some reason. They didn’t elaborate any further But when boiling strip the parts clean, as in no oil or dirt just hose them down with non chlorinated brake clean or acetone…. And get them as dry as possible. The rust on that vetterli looked like a really fine really even coat that has been put on SLOW over the past 100 years…. It will blue very nicely as is. Or if you want a deeper result apply a rusting agent after the first boil and card. And repeat the process Mark Novak at ANVIL here on RUclips has several great bluing videos Things like sand paper And chemical Finnish strippers are your enemy when doing firearm finishes do not take sand paper to a milsurp unless absolutely necessary…. Scotchbrites and scrapers are your friend for doing wood. I’ve done entire rifles without ever touching a piece of sand paper. Idk how it’ll affect POA-POI but 6.5 vetterli sights are available online… haven’t found an original for the 10.4mm though. If you want to try your hand at tinning/ soldering
God save the Tsar. God save tsar nicholas ll.
I want it
I have a few Italian Vetterli rifles, only one from rti. I bought a cutdown one for testing new loads, or parts. I haven't gotten into the 6.5 conversion ones. It's one of my fave designs, combination of looks, design, and the long varied history behind them :)
Sana envidia.... que gran coleccion... fabulosos. Saludos desde Argentina!!
Very nice! I bought a Vetterli and a Gras Calvary Carbine (both from RTI) and yes they cruddy as hell but both cleaned up nice.
Got an AOI 1884 marked one 2 weeks ago and showed up like yours. The only thing that was missing was the front and rear sight but that was mentioned in the title. Bore was crusty and cleaned up good with nice rifling. Bought a .44 special insert for it and shoots pretty good. Not a bad pickup for $150
@@SoliderearGaming nice! I had no clue you could buy a .44 special insert for an Italian Vetterli. I’ll have to check it out.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 It came out about 2 weeks ago, but it is a nice little piece. You can get them at Proteus Armaments
@@SoliderearGaming just looked it up, found it, and ordered it about an hour ago. Thank you for letting me know about this because now I don’t gotta worry about reloading. Not yet at least.
Don’t use bluing substances. Use a bluing box, it’s a better quality blueing process. Molten salts are not worth the hassle unless you’re refinishing hundreds of rifles a week.
@@poltpickle2530 I’ll have to keep that in mind, me and my brother recently experimented with a bluing substance that we tried on his rifle. It didn’t turn out very even in the end, but he was happy with it as it didn’t have any bluing left on it originally.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 Rust bluing (a bluing box) when done correctly will give you a completely even blue every time. You don’t have to do anything other than clean it, place it in the box, wait for it to rust over, boil the parts, repeat until you get the blue you want. Solutions/salts are better if you want different color blues/immediate bluing. With some older home mixes you can get plum purple. “The NRA Gunsmithing Guide - Updated” has blueprints/step by step for an easy bluing box and how to do it. It will save you head aches and rebluing time. If you used the Birchwood Casey product I’m thinking of, you have to apply the blue in straight lines the full length of the part evenly, otherwise exactly what you said happened happens.
@@poltpickle2530 i’ll definitely be looking into rust bluing then. I’m also going to eventually attempt nickel plating.
Hi. If I could suggest watch the channel Rakum Projects. The guy covers a lot of old surplus rifles and shooting these. Also Readiness Reviews is another favorite of mine and honset reviews of surplus firearm.
Are you going to get the .410 adapter or reload for it?
@@mhaugen692 yes, as soon as it’s available again.
I have one for my calvary Gras. It works great.
where can I find this 410 adapter?
@@mhaugen692 I got a .410 adapter
So I’ve gotten everything apart with the exception of the bolt(rusted threads firing pin is cocked and stuck) and the barrel band springs Any suggestions or advice?
@@sicsempertyrannis4613 I would get a gallon of rust removing solution and a large tub or any kind of container big enough to soak the whole bolt in. Once it’s soaking leave it in for 24+ hours and that should free things up quite nicely. as for the barrel bands if they’re off of the wooden stock, go ahead and soak them with the bolt. If they’re stuck on the wooden stock, you probably could still soak them as long as your rust removing solution is guaranteed safe on wood. Or, you could maybe just try spraying the rusted areas with some PB blaster or liquid wrench and letting that soak in.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 thanks man RTI still has cleaning rods and a reproduction M91 carcano sling which wouldn’t be technically wrong for those of us with the 6.5 training/rear echelon rifles
Congrats on the rifle, esp since it came with a rear sight. I bought one a few months ago, mine was really-really dirty but I took it apart and it cleaned up nice. It is now hanging up in my home office now.
How did you like shooting that Vetterli
@@Wicked505 it’s gotta be one of my favorites. It’s not too powerful, not too weak and as long as you’re using the proper low pressure ammo it’s perfectly safe.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 are you reloading or using Milsurp munitions
@@Wicked505Milsurp Munitions for now, but I’d like to reload my own someday.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 nice I got a box as well but haven’t shot it yet
@@Wicked505 I haven’t had any major problems with it other than I came across one round that had a rather loose bullet in the casing that I could turn slightly. I just avoided shooting it however, the rest were fine.
Great video wonder if you could find a bayonet for them also
@@AaronEwell-p8x i’ve been thinking about finding one for these rifles for a while. RTI has Vetterli bayonets listed, but in the description of them, it says they couldn’t find a rifle that was perfect match.
I appreciate the Effort you put into restoring this nice rifle I wondered why you left the dense And dig's Is for posterity You could have used a linen , baby diaper teaspoon of water And a steam iron That would have caused the wood to swell and your dent would disappear ❤ Keep up the cool videos
Dents can be brought out, dings cannot, as the wood is missing rather than being compressed. Shellac is your friend when it comes to dings.
Plenty big for what you got going on. Hope it works out for ya!
Very nice
@@wagon9082 thanks.
You know the barrel bands are threaded right? Loosen the captive screw at the bottom… and bands will just fall off… rather than prying and gouging and scratching up your stock. …….
@@matthewjames4334 I tried loosening them as much as I could, but I think that maybe some threads are stripped out because, one of them wasn’t loosening no matter how much I turned it, I’ve learned how to stretch them a bit with a screwdriver and that seems to help.

What grades?
@@Prest0n97 B grade 1870/87 (10.4x47 Vetterli) and an A grade 1870/87/15 (Carcano Vetterli)
One of them is missing a rear sight so it is the B Grade 1870/87 without the rear sights for $200. The other one is basically $300.
Beautiful
Separate as chickens will eat chicks that aren't there's
Depends on the mom, how high is she in the pecking order. If she's high up they'll be fine, if not take mom and babies to a separate area.
SEPERATE THEM!! I ALMOST LOST MY CHICK THIS WAY!! BROODY HENS AND LAYING HENS ARE AGRESSIVE TOWARDS EACHOTHER! THEY SHOULD HAVE THEIR OWN PLACE WITH VENTILATION PREDATOR PROOFING AND APPROPRIATE FEED
@@chaos2232 Don’t worry, already did it, I was asking around on Facebook as well, and everybody suggested I’d leave them with them but all I had to do was think about how crazy the other hens can get sometimes. So I decided to just go ahead and put them in my artificial Brooder, which I’ve already successfully raised countless chicks in.
@Nathaniel_Reichert777 Thank god, is the hen gonna raise them or will you raise them on your own?
@@chaos2232 i’m raising them on my own right now, but the hens are probably gonna eventually hatch some more. I’m checking several times a day to see when that happens and I think by then I’ll be a little bit more comfortable with separating them and the hen into a separate coop by themselves. i’m just deciding to raise the chicks by myself without the hens right now because I’ve done that successfully before, but never from chicks hatched from my own flock.
@@Nathaniel_Reichert777 oh ok, thanks for the clarification! Good luck!
Just came back to sub
@@carolinaplinker thank you, I appreciate it.
Nice
I’d like to mention that this is my number one egg producing coop and I’d hate to have to switch all the birds over to chick feed and not to mention the fact that they’re around 20 other chickens in this coop and the holes in the wire are probably big enough for the chicks to get out of. I’m leaving them in there for now but I’d like to know what somebody a little more experienced has to say. Also, now that I know that this can work, I’d like to try to try this again with some more fertile eggs .
Please separate them
@chaos2232 You wanna go more in depth with that?
@clockworkNate yes, chickens are very defensive and often will attack each other especially when broody or laying, they could peck at the chick or try to steal jt or it could get caught in a fight and get hurt. A mother hen will kill for her chicks. Please do more research as I'm speaking from my experience
I have all ways liked the way they look. Congratulations.

That is a very nice start to a collection. A well rounded assortment. Since I started accumulating in the 70s with a lot of $10-$30 guns, I'm compleatly out of space but that doesn't stop me. At the last 4 gunshows I came home with 5 new ones😊

I got one also, they cleaned up pretty nice. Let us know how they turned out .
I’m starting to clean up the 1870/87. I’ll have a video on it in the near future.
Same here
I have bought two antiques rifles for RTI (a Vetterli and a Gras) and have the freaking rear sight missing, anyone know why?
@@behindenemylines3361 it’s pretty common with certain RTI rifles, my 1870/87 has a missing rear sight. These rifles spent a lot of time in Ethiopia being used by their military, and for some reason a lot of the soldiers didn’t like rear sights and removed them. I have absolutely no idea why they didn’t like them but the vast majority of former Ethiopian Military owned rifles from RTI seem to be missing their rear sites. In some cases, they offer a $50/$100 hand select option for getting a rifle that actually does have a rear sight.
