Saving a Cool Vintage Grain Bin: Part 2, The Metal and Finish
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.4 года назад
It's finally time to finish this amazing grain bin console. In part one, Mike overhauled the almost rotten grain bin the crew salvaged from an old house in Mt. Jackson, VA. In this episode, John powers through a custom angle iron base and the two come together in the woodshop to use our new, reclaimed shiplap paneling to create a custom shelf to pair with a salvaged beadboard back panel. The me...
We FINISH the Corn Sheller Coffee Table // Black Dog Builds
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 года назад
It this episode, we finally finish this one-of-a-kind coffee table. We left off in part 1 with two "half-wheel" table legs that, after a bit of trial and error, were welded together from an old corn sheller flywheel and some steel from the metal shop. In the first part of this episode, Tay discovers a problem with his mounting tabs and has to go back to the drawing board, to a degree, to make t...
Saving a Cool Vintage Grain Bin: Part 1, The Dirty Stuff
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.4 года назад
It's old, it's dirty, and NO we aren't talking about Mike!! This week, the fabrication team at Black Dog Salvage tackles the upcycle of an antique grain bin into a one-of-a-kind console with a unique storage solution. Part of being in the salvage business is collecting unique items, which sometimes means holding on to those items for quite a while. 5 years ago, Mike and the salvage team found t...
Corn Sheller Coffee Table Build: Part 1, The Base
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 года назад
Mike and Cam, and special guest, Tay, work through the challenges of creating a one-of-a-kind coffee table from an abandoned corn sheller, a truly odd piece of agricultural equipment. Once the overall design is figured out, Mike takes on the woodwork while Tay and Cam figure out how to weld to the old cast iron wheel that is to be incorporated into the base. Cast iron welding is difficult, so T...
Ironwood Deck Chairs: Part 2, The Woodwork // Black Dog Builds
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.4 года назад
Welcome back! In this episode, Mike and Cam finish these stunning deck chairs! Starting with the carefully fabricated metal frame, Cam sets to work mocking up the back slats and the seat, making sure the chair feels like its supposed to...like a chair. Once the proportions feel right and the dimensions of the wood pieces is established, it's over to Mike in the woodshop to start milling the sla...
Ironwood Deck Chairs: Part 1, The Metalwork // Black Dog Builds
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 года назад
In this episode, Mike brings a cool deck chair design he just sold down to the shop to bring it to life. Cam, the fab shop foreman, gets a quick briefing before it's off to the races, doing air math, drawing (somewhat) to scale, cutting, welding and assembling in order to get the frame done. The crew has eight of these chairs to make so it was crucial to use the first one as a model and make a ...

Live Edge Walnut Charcuterie Board // Black Dog Builds
Просмотров 81 тыс.4 года назад
Today in the shop, Zach, a talented member of our team with experience building high-end sets for theaters in New York, takes a beautiful live-edge walnut slab and crafts a unique version of our "selling like hotcakes" charcuterie boards. While we don't necessarily feel like we're fancy enough to use that word, the French bothered to come up with it so why not save time and sound fancy at the s...
Oxygen Tank Zen Bell // Black Dog Builds
Просмотров 9 тыс.4 года назад
In this episode, Cameron, our fab shop foreman, takes us through the process of making one of our oxygen cylinder "zen bells". Making something from scrap always requires a "shoot from the hip" approach as you have to make snap decisions on the fly and improvise based on the materials you're working with. We've made these bells out of full-sized cylinders as well as tiny cylinders like this one...
Salvaged Door Christmas Tree // Black Dog Builds
Просмотров 27 тыс.4 года назад
In this episode, Mike takes a salvaged, four-panel door and upcycles it into a free-standing Christmas tree with a rustic modern twist. With the creative use of our Festool track saw, he cuts two pie shapes off the rectangular door leaving the core of a 6-foot tall tree. He then uses some old barn wood to create a frame and ironwood to make a stand. These timeless, maintenance-free, "trees" may...

The rigid welding connection cuts the resonance of the bell. It doesn't truly ring.

Little bit painful to watch if you want to do it properly, use metric measurements 😂. So much work easier just to drill 4 holes in the ski for the shot glasses. Then you’re also not limited to those 4 magnetic shot glasses. But great job

nice video. I had a walnut tree cut down from my yard a couple years ago, and i saved as much as i could for woodworking. I made walnut charcuterie boards for all my friends this Christmas. they all turned out amazing - walnut is really beautiful, durable wood and if anyone ever gets the chance to work it, you will know what I mean. Looking forward to more projects with my walnut as it's just getting dry enough to work with. Being in Western Canada we don't have much hardwood, so I feel fortunate! I am just a beginner wood worker with entry-level tools, but I am enjoying learning and appreciate how many great woodworkers share their craft and knowledge on youtube. Thanks!
