An almost 3 way cross at Woodstock between BHP & FMG
During our last full day of photographing and filming the Iron Ore trains in the Pilbara in June 2024 we almost struck gold with what could have resulted in a 3 way cross, but alas it was not to be. At any rate, I decided to still upload it due to the amount of activity. This is only filmed on my Pixel 8 Pro, so not the best quality, and trying to hold the phone steady for such an amount of time is not easy.
Shout out to my trip mates Brendan and Bobby, and an extra special shout out to Toad for all his advice and assistance on the trip, plus all the laughs!

Thank you to Josiah for reminding me that I had not yet uploaded the third video of my Short North series. Unfortunately, my phone's battery died part way through the final part of the trip, so I only got to film so far back, I was hoping to make it to at least Vales Point junction, which I only just missed by a few kms. At present, I am not qualified south of Vales Point (between Wyee and Mori...

Cab View of the trip from Wilpinjong coal mine to Bylong in the Central West region of NSW on the Sandy Hollow to Gulgong Cross Country railway line. An earlier video of mine captures Bylong onward. This is probably my favourite line to run on, you're off in your own world with hardly a soul in sight, single line running so there aren't too many stops, and fantastic scenery. Cab view of the trip from Eraring Power Station on Lake Macquarie to Hexham in the Hunter Valley. I apologise for the shakiness of the view in the first few frames of the video, as well as the smudges on the windscreen that distort part of the view. 🤠🤠🤠
Those trains are massive! I always wondered how the mines kept producing enough coal to fill all the coal trains but this is on another level!
@@JDTrain it would be impossible to visualise just how large these seams (whether coal, ore or other) must be in order to keep producing stock. The trains over there are on another level, I got back home and felt like I was driving a toy in comparison.
Having worked for bhp I can tell you there's a lot of planning and coordination that goes on. The mines have stockpiles of ore ready for the load out and usually they can load a train without stopping. Sometimes your not so lucky and have to wait a bit for them to catch up. When I left a train consisted of 2 rakes of 2 locos and 134 cars. Loaded weight averaged 41000t. Hope this helps.
Wished there was a video of the trip going into Vales point
I do have one, from this same day, but unfortunately my camera tilted, so the video is a bit crooked. I could upload it as a temporary video until I get a better one though.
Another great video Can you tell me where the coal load came from? Just so I can simulate it on my Train Simulator too
That particular load came from Werris Creek coal mine
@@djt6012 Won't be able to say that for much longer!
@@djt6012 thanks
Thanks for posting. A great journey. I could identify many of the stations you passed but not all. Maybe, if not too difficult, showing station names would have been helpful. Nevertheless very enjoyable.
I have thought about that, unfortunately my video editing skills are not quite up there to effectively add details like that. It's something I hope to work on in future.
Thanks for responding. It was not a major problem - just a suggestion. It was not a criciism of your work.
Very good video
Nice video. I'm glad we could get a replacement for the bit of the trip from Enfield that we didn't get to see. And I enjoyed being able to see the train go through Broadmeadow Yard. You don't often get to see it from that perspective!
Good to see bidirectional working Cowan to Hawkesbury River
Very nice scenery with a nice variety of trains. Easily my favourite train line Australia. Great video!
Somehow I got messed up into believing that Pennant Hills was Hornsby so I was very surprised to see Asquith with three platforms until I realized "Oh wait, that's Thornleigh"
I hope the train started up okay after stopping at the end of the video. It mustn't be easy to start a heavy train on those steep 1 in 40 grades.
This run was empty, so thankfully no issues.
What type of locomotive
Either a C40aci or a C44acHi, I can't recall which exact one
@@djt6012 ok thank you
Why speed it up? I watch videos like this from Europe and Japan that are over an hour long. I feel speed detracts from the realism of the journey and the scenery.
I could do some real time videos. I've just done the time lapse formula as I wasn't sure how many viewers would sit through a lot of it. Especially when we might be climbing a hill for 30 minutes only doing about 10 km/h.
Would you be able to do a video of the Bloomfield Coal loop in Four Mile Creek? I've always wondered what it's like to go down there.
Hi, unfortunately my company doesn't have the contract to run in there. A PN driver would have to film one. Sorry about that
Oh, okay. What company do you work for?
@@JDTrain Aurizon
Pacific National does that loop
I watched this in preview and became increasingly confused, that doesn't look like Northumbria.... lol nice infrastructure in NSW!
Great video
Excellent video, pity no audio!!
If I included audio it would more likely be a snippet of my mate and I talking about our weekend plans and/or complaining about Live Run. With the mode on my phone I use to capture these (time lapse) audio isn't included. I'll see what I can do about future videos though.
Were’s the Bloody sound 😢
Thanks for this video it brings back a lot of memories as I was up working the construction trains from early 1982.
Hey, Can you try & do 1 to Vales Point please
I'll try, though I'm not qualified for that route and I'm yet to run it. Hopefully that might change soon
I helped lay the ballast, sleepers and rail for that track back in Silverton days.
Was wondering at 2:54 the track on the right seemed to disappear not long after. Any idea where it lead to?
That's the Mt. Pleasant branch line
Kerrabee. I can only vaguely remember a little about it. My Great Grandfather lived there.
Great video! Loved it!!
It is not common to be taken on a trip from the Hunter line to the central coast line. Thanks for posting.
Driven that road out to Moorlarben & Ulan many ti es and always wondered what it would look like from the rail. Thanks for posting. These are great
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing.
❓
Great video any of the return?
Not yet, this was only my second time into this loop. The previous time I departed it out, but wanted a look at it instead of filming. I'll try and get one next time I'm there.
Great potential for a passenger train from Newcastle to Dubbo through here.
How many passengers a week do you think there'd be?
@@doubledee9675 if properly advertised two or four trains a day morning and afternoon would be full.
@@AustNRail Do you think there'd be enough traffic for 4 each way? Certainly enough for a morning and an afternoon.
And extended to and from Mudgee.
@@doubledee9675 the area is booming. Dubbo is coming on in leaps and bounds. Unfortunately Mudgee is after the junction to be part of the Newcastle route but would be suitable to make the connection with Lithgow
Cool thanks mate
That Loop at Bylong is an extra long one!
Not running red signals. Not like previous video coming into crossing loop passed 2 red signals heading towards coal loader. They weren't green or yellow.
Which video was that? No red signals were passed or I'd possibly be out of a job. They were probably Calling On signals (two red lights, with a little yellow light below)
Ooooohhhhh you speed demon, you! Just as well you slowed at the end or the momentum would've sent me crashing into my computer screen! LOL😁😁😁😁😁
5:52 Scone - Gets a bit messy passing through here. All that flour, jam and butter getting on the wheels of the train! LOL😁😁😁
2:25 Aberdeen Station, looks like it's been decommissioned. I came past this station some ten years ago, grabbed a snack at a shop and parked near the station while I chomped. Had a bit of a browse, the station had a "Countrylink" sign that looks like it's been removed.
Aberdeen is still active, it gets used by the Scone pass service daily, as well as the Xplorer service if requested.
That looked wrong to me. Dual track! I've driven up through the Hunter on my way to Nundle for camping trips at Easter, And I've seen the rail line up that way as Single Track with occasional passing loops. Travelling up that way I passed through Singleton, Muswellbrook and on up to Murrurrundi and the rail line comes into view on occasions, always single track with occasional passing loops. The single track begins near Singleton, so I believe.
The single line begins at Muswellbrook, where the Ulan Line branches off from the Main North Line. Port Waratah to Maitland is 4 lines (2 coal lines, 2 main lines), then the North Coast line begins from Maitland which is single line, while the Main North continues as double track, and in parts triple track, until Muswellbrook.
@@djt6012 I know about the North Coast line, it drops to single track at Telarah but I always thought the track up to the north-west dropped to single line after Singleton(would've been appropriate, Single Line, Singleton! LOL😁)
When I was signed off for the road, the single line started at Antiene. 50Kmh turnout on the up from memory.
@@djt6012 The single line begins just before the train enters Telarah Station, heading north.
It was double track to Antiene (north of Liddell PS), single track to Grass Tree, double track to St Heliers, and finally single track to Muswellbrook and beyond. Now it’s double track all the way to Muswellbrook
Shhhhhhhhhhhhh.......! Silent Movie! Inspired my Mel Brooks!😁😁😁😁😁
I can tell this video has been sped up! Where there's a view of cars on the highway to the right, those cars are barrelling along at speeds that would make a radar speed cop *very* dizzy indeed! LOL😁
Thanks for posting. Nice to be up front on the "other" lines. Not much passenger or freight activity. Was this on a Sunday?
I wonder how long it lasts, doesn't look very temporary to me haha. I used to drive for PN in the Hunter Valley, so your vids bring back some memories
It's already been closed. It was operational for about 3 years. Has now been moved to the up side of Bengalla
@@djt6012 Oh ok, wow, I'll have to take a drive out there soon to take a look
Top video poor old Aberdeen loop doesn't seem to get used much these days hopefully one day it will be extended longer
Yeah, I've only been put away into it on a light engine move, or to do a descale once.
Another great video
Can this be uploaded in normal speed.
I could try and decrease the speed but the quality would be reduced. As I only use my phone with limited storage I use the time lapse feature to capture as much distance as possible. I'll see what I can do though, I'll let you know if I'm successful.
Another great video
Another great video
Thank you, I'll keep them coming. I realise these videos aren't the best quality, but it's a way I can share what I see at work with others, as well as preserve these routes before inevitable changes. There have been so many changes in the 14 years I've been on the footplate that I wish I had recorded them years ago.
Good to see PN's 90 class in the Banking Siding. When I go up there they are never there or around
Thanks for sharing. Now I can model it better on my Train Simulator
Thank for posting Wondered what the tunnel was like.Watched it being built years ago.
Pretty cool. What’s the train/loco? Any chance of sound?
No sound unfortunately, but was a double 6000 class followed by 44 120t coal hoppers, for a domestic coal service.
My apologies, I actually had the wrong video. This particular train was a DP service with 88 120t wagons bound for NCIG. I thought this reply was to another of my videos, sorry about the mix-up
