Gastric sleeve in five days; pre op appointment lowdown
Hi Laura my name is douglas
Your mother is a part of your life and if it's important to you, you should talk about it.
Well, they say nothing worthwhile is ever easy. It's true. Our health is worthwhile but just because we had had weight loss surgery will not make it easy and in some ways, I think it's harder! I don't know why someone would be unkind. My suggestion is, if they want to come back and be negative, block whoever. This community is pretty tight and very supportive and negativity is not welcome. Yes, sometimes, we might need to say, get your act together but a lot of things are in the way we say it and what it's motivated by, concern and caring or just wanting to be the food police. Whatever is said should be said with kindness and caring always. Well, I rant pretty good.
It really is tough! I think a lot of it is the mental obstacles that are challenging. Overcoming my own thoughts, people’s perceptions, etc isn’t easy. Thank you so much for the encouragement!
You are supposed to be winded while treadmilling. A 3-week stall happens to many. It is actually called "The dreaded 3-week stall." Keep in mind that stalls are normal and will happen. It's your body adjusting to the changes in your body. I don't think the medical establishment think that the "3-week stall" is credible but there is a Dr. Guillermo Alvarez with Endobariatrics (Mexico) who does say stalls are your body adjusting to the changes. I was fortunate, I didn't stall until I was 12 weeks out. However, the 1st week I lost all of 1.2 lbs and I cried at my 1-week post-op appt. I said so many times pre-surgery and it was a real fear, "I've failed so many times trying to lose weight, I'll be one of the few who fails at weight loss surgery." 1st week out and I already felt like a failure. I was pitiful and looking back, I feel sorry for the nurse and dietician who had to talk me down from "the ledge". The next week I lost 7 lbs and then the 3rd week I was back to 1.2 lbs. After that I picked up speed. I guess it's right when everyone says everyone's weight loss journey is different. How we all do it is different but the end result of weight loss is the prize. LOL, I'm in a stall right now but I've never had one that lasted longer than a week. Hope that is the case with this one. Will certainly say a prayer for your mother.
Oh, I know - it feels so good. Makes me feel alive to be winded... 😁 Don’t you think it’s crazy that it isn’t recognized as legit?? It’s insanity! It’s like when doctors used to think cramps were all in a woman’s head. Yea, right. Even though I’m no longer in the stall period, I still haven’t lost loads of weight. It has been very slow and very little. I have to remind myself it’s only been a month. But it’s still hard not to feel like I’m doing something wrong. I really appreciate you and you sharing your experiences- it’s really helpful!!
I get the 94% fat-free Orville Redenbacher 100 calorie (kettle corn) popcorn and spray it with butter spray which I know adds calories but also adds taste. Popcorn is on the list of you shouldn't eat foods but like you, popcorn is one of my favorite snacks.
Fabulous idea...I am totally going to try that. Honestly I can’t live a lifetime without it. It’s the one thing!
To me, soft foods were basically regular foods minus raw veggies, beef which is harder to digest. As much as I love salad, I waited till I was 3 months out to try it. Was so happy when Tiny P said salad was cool! Waited a while for beef and it was fine too. I actually started soft foods a day early at a Thanksgiving get together of my bariatric group. Had turkey. So good! I freaked (silently, unfortunately) because they had cheesecake for dessert. Almost, too late, I found out it was sugar-free. I tried some and it was quite good.
Bypass to a Leaner Lynn I am really ready! It’s time. By the way, I love hearing from you and getting your perspective. It’s very helpful!
You are doing great. Sounds like Planet Fitness takes your money and leaves you stranded.
I love that you're addicted to True Crime and Hallmark... polar opposites!
I know - it makes no sense. At all. 😂😂 I seriously can’t help myself. I also love sci-fi. I think I’m the world’s biggest dork.
Evil Genius!
Taylor Ulin yes!!!!
I lost a whopping 1.2 lbs the 1st week out and I was 279 lbs on surgery day. You are in the dreaded 3 to 4 week stall. Next week will be better.
Bypass to a Leaner Lynn That is soooo good to hear! Were you going crazy too?? I admit, I feel somewhat like a failure - even though I’m doing what I was told... Thanks for sharing. I truly appreciate it!!
I cried at my 1st post-op appt. I thought I was going to lose those "oodles" of weight. 1.2 lbs, really???!!! My clothes were getting so loose. Next week I lost 7 lbs. I was fortunate and missed the 3 to 4 week stall. I waited till about 12 weeks and it sucked! I know they happen & why but what's to like about a stall? I am in a slow down right now. But the weight will come off. I got scolded at my 6-month post-op appt for not eating enough. Never thought I'd hear that. So I'm trying really hard to eat more but in the back of my mind, I'm panicking that I'm eating too much. There's a lot of mental stuff on this journey.
Welcome to the Loser's Bench! Talk about quick, I didn't even have time to look around. Got me on the table, slapped a mask on my face and that's all I remember.
Bypass to a Leaner Lynn It was crazy!! So fast. How long before the pain subsided for you?

You might not want to go by me. I feel like I recovered pretty fast. My bypass surgery was on the 17th which was a Tuesday. When I was in recovery, the pain was pretty bad, they gave me 3 shots of morphine, not much relief. They had just gotten bariatric beds and they were huge and the nurse and orderly did not know how to "drive" the durn thing. I think it would have been less painful to walk to my room. I swear they bumped into everything and getting the bed into the elevator was pure torture (why don't they put the surgery floors on the same floor as they do surgery?). Then, when they had tortured me sufficiently, they got me to my room and gave me Dilaudid. Good stuff! The Dilaudid worked very well (and I'm a baby about pain) and the 2nd night, I was on liquid Lortab and I took that through Sunday. I wanted to be able to drive so that was it for me. I started really walking on day 4 and by day 6, I was up to 10,000 steps a day (I walked about 3 times a day. (I did use a walker at that point in time). I think my recovery was surprisingly easy. Shoot, when I went for the barium swallow the morning after surgery, the woman who was there at the same time for a sleeve surgery was right behind me. She looked like she felt way worse than I did and she was at least 20 years younger than me.
Great decision!
Bypass to a Leaner Lynn Thank you!!!
I couldn't eat 1200 calories if my life depended on it. I'm supposed to be at 800 to a 1000 and it's a struggle and I'm 7 months out from gastric bypass. 1200 calories is a pretty good diet pre-surgery. My program was a liquid diet with Optifast! I lost at least 12 lbs on the liquid diet, hated the Optifast shakes! Praying for a good surgery & a quick recovery!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate the encouragement- it’s only 2 days away! 1200 calories has been very challenging and honestly can’t believe I’ve been doing it! What kinds of food are you eating now?
I pretty much eat low carb. Lots of veggies, I'm an excellent zoodler, I love me some cauliflower rice/cauliflower mashed taters/cauliflower pasta. Meat is usually fish, chicken, pork and turkey. I also love legumes and veggie burgers. Probably the only grain I eat is quinoa which I love! I can eat 4 to 6 oz depending on what I'm eating. I do eat Ole Extreme Wellness tortillas which I make wraps with but I avoid bread, rice, starchy veggies and anything sugary. I've dumped once and don't ever want to do that again. I sometimes think about trying Halo Top ice cream but since sweets and ice cream were triggers for me, I'm afraid I'd lose control! I've also added nuts at the recommendation of the bariatric nurse because she said I'm not eating enough. Never thought I'd hear a medical person say I'm not eating enough!
Those are great suggestions -- Thank you for sharing!! I've never asked anyone but Is popcorn okay?
I think it depends on your program. Mine says no popcorn, however, I do occasionally have some. I bought one of the 6 pack Orville Redenbacher's 94% fat-free kettle corn 100 calorie boxes and I've had it for months and I still have 1 or 2 packs left. I, of course, do not recommend you don't do what your nutritionist says and I pretty much do what they say. I do use straws :)
I will definitely talk to her. When you mentioned triggers popcorn was the first thing I thought of! Can't imagine a life without it - pathetic, right? Ooh! I like the straw suggestion!
Like the good work keep it up
Hey girl! I just started my Journey in WLS. I started my Vlogging and came across your channel. How does it feel knowing you will lose that weight? Do people treat you differently?
Hangry and Hopeful, People have been very supportive and encouraging. Some are surprised by my choice, including my son but after I explained all of my reasons, they understand. Thanks for watching! You’re the first! :)
That's awesome! My daughters know... they have been supportive as they understand the pains i go through.. I am not sure how many of my "friends" i can share it with
I understand the apprehension. I have that feeling as well and choose who to share with... it’s tough because there feels like a judgement comes with the response at times. I point out all the benefits and the work I’ve put in and it usually changes the tone of the conversation of those who don’t initially understand.
