Should you even bother buying a hotrail? (DiMarzio Chopper T Review)
I wanted to get myself a hotrail style pickups for my Harley Benton TE-20 and so I did. I chose the DiMazio Chopper T and I installed it. And well, I obviously shot it out against the stock single coil that was in my guitar prior. You can see the see and hear the test as well as my personal thought on the matter of pickups, hotrails this particular pickup and do they matter and should you buy one in this video.

    Try changing your IR, you'll find what you're looking for than changing pickups. Get it for its other features like being noiseless and aesthetic, but a speaker or IR change will always give a big change. There are midrange focused ones out there

      @AlexGichevMusic День назад

      Yeah, exactly my point. Tbh I wasn't really expecting a change in the high gain sound. When it comes to that the ir/speaker is like THE MOST critical point of the signal chain and all the other subtle nuances just get lost in the gain. Thanks for commenting!

      @@AlexGichevMusic hot pickups had their place in gear history as it was hard to drive amps back then. But now, high gain sounds are easy to get that even a single coil can sound "heavy" (with hum of course). I got to play a real JCM800 and I maxed out the preamp gain but it sounds like crunch lol. Maybe that was what hot pickups were for, to get a distorted sound more easily

    I've had a Chopper T in my AmSd since 2008. It was the first modification I made to it and the only one that's stuck through the 16 years I've had it. I wouldn't say it's a perfect pickup, but with some gain they sound incredible through big amps, they tame down that shrillness just enough for me.

    Hello, great vid. I've been hanging on the same subject, i have a HB ST62 and i've been modding it to look like the strat from Per Eriksson on Ghost. The stock pickups are single coil ( duh) and are a bit noisy and thin, so i've been looking at a SD Hot rails or a Dimarzio Air Norton S, but the same question comes to mind, is it really worth it changing the pickups or try to get a fuller tone by using better amps/ pedals? I really dislike the thin strat sound but maybe i could get the tone i seek by using a booster pedal or even an EVH 5150 od pedal ( has noise gate and plenty of distortion ) What do you think?

    • @AlexGichevMusic
      @AlexGichevMusic 4 дня назад

      Hey! Thanks for writing! Well, Ghost tones are usually more in the boosted marshall teritory of gain, which is more gain than my crunch example, but less than the high gain one, so you might notice some difference, but it will definitely be a very very tiny one. You will for sure notice a bigger difference in tone if you buy a noise gate (I'd recommend the TC Sentry) and an EQ pedal (don't overspend here, a cheap Harley Benton one should do the trick). A booster pedal wouldn't help you much in this situation, since it just adds more volume and with that more gain, it doesn't really thicken up the sound or cut down on the noise. If anything it will add more noise and a lot of times boosters add more high end to your signal, so it can sound even harsher. As far as the 5150 OD goes: I've never tried one myself, but from all the stuff I've seen on that thing It's VERY GOOD. Don't let the name deceive you though, this is a preamp pedal, not really an overdrive. It is made for being the heart of your high gain tone, you can plug it into you fx loop for example. It sound very good and it does have a gate, as well as a 3 band eq, which you can use to make your guitar sound less harsh, but you will definitely have more control if you buy a dedicated eq pedal. Hope this helped. If you have any more questions feel free to send them my way! What is your rig right now btw?

Using pedals gives more flexibility because i can use them for both guitars.

    The mix: I thought it sounded rather muddy. Main culprit probably being the guitars that sound like a blanket was on top of them. The drums were pretty decent. I had to actually listen to the bass 'cos I was like "where is the bass?" 😀👀 I mean, the bass was so camouflaged I couldn't hear it at first. It would need separation. It looks like ur lowcut for guitars is too low, put it into ~100Hz, that should help some at least. Drums: Yeahh, I think ur way was too complicated using 4 different sets 😀🥴 What I would do and what I have done, is just use SSD5.5 and then use its function to add one-shot samples! U don't need the Trigger for that! OR just choose the best overall drum plugin and use Trigger with that if needed. OR at most choose 2 of the best plugins to blend and maybe Trigger if needed. Bass: I have The Growler too, but haven't actually tested it, but I thought the distortion u had with it sounded weird 😦 As if having a constant flanger on it? 🤔 Guitars: I would have never guessed u quad tracked it! 😱 Which is alarming... 'Cos if it's quad tracked and doesn't sound thick and wide AF, there's something very wrong! 🙉 It sounds rather fuzzy and like not hard panned. I noticed u had the 1st set hard panned and the 2nd mostly in the middle, that could be it... Also, u had no highcut. That can/will add all kinds of fizzzzz. Put it into 8-10kHz. Those tricks might clear it a bit. And I dunno how many IRs u used, but use at least 2 different per side if quading. U only used the Fenrir? Didn't like the Roots cabs? I would have suggested to use the Roots cabs on the 1set of guitars and Fenrir on the 2nd, that would make the sound beefier. And that synth trick sounded like something out of Jordan Valeriote's playbook 😀 I wouldn't have noticed it, unless u hadn't shown it in the mix! Not my cup of tea, but 💁‍♂ Keys: Oh, there were keys in the song? 😅 Sounded cool in ur explanation, but got very much lost in the actual mix. Maybe the highcut in the guitars will give them a lil' more room... Master: You could put all kinds of things here, but the 1st thing I'd add is a tape saturator to glue stuff up before the limiter. Or u could use the free Masterdesk Classic plugin from Plugin Alliance. That's probably all 😀 Good luck!

So a few thoughts .. firstly Submission Audio has a free version of their tuner plugin and it's really good with low tuned stuff (not surprising given they do some of the best bass guitar virtual instruments around). Secondly, the Audio Assault Amp Locker and now Bass Locker ecosystem is great .. well worth a look for how much is packed into the free versions Thirdly, there are a few great channels around for metal production .. EOL Studios / Dr Mike T and Nick Leonard's are two of my favourites (other than resington) but there are a heap of small and large channels that are great. At some stage I may try to recreate your template in Reaper, but I've got a few things on the go at the moment, so don't expect anything soon!

    While I've mostly been a passive user since I began playing in the mid 80s, I have also used actives, mostly EMGs. They are fine pickups. If an ax came with EMGs I would consider that a plus and leave them. But I've mostly used the Duncan Distortion, at times the JB, Custom, Alternative 8 or Full Shred. But 90% of the time, a Duncan Distortion. EMGs are still relevant. Fishmans are fine, but EMG is here to stay. Fishmans are not that much better that EMG should be worried. Also, I don't think actives are on the decline. I think they will only become more popular. I don't think they will ever become the standard, but they will always be an option. As far as bassists are concerned, active pretty much IS the standard.

  • @Davix-tt9sh
    @Davix-tt9sh 14 дней назад

    My problems with EMG are: 1) absence of split coil (there are the TW versions of some models but I have an 8 string) and additional voicings. 2) Mid gain tones aren't that great, but I don't use them much. 3) At least on the 808, (could be because it's alnico instead of ceramic), the bass isn't tight at all, and they have an harsh frequency in the highs, needing a bit of EQ. 4) Non standard routing, at least for 6+ strings model, the 808 is built into a 4 string bass housing, making impossibile to install them in a guitar that's routed for passives. Now to the positives: 1)Excellent gain to noise ratio 2) Nice string separation in chords even at high gain. 3) Unpopular but, great cleans, especially the neck, it`s the only neck hum i've ever liked, and works great with high gain sweeps too. 4) Price, especially used is very very low, great way to upgrade a budget guitar or to change the character of any guitar. 5) Solderless is nice too.

      Yea, I already had to change the bated once, but granted I did pit a cheap one in there. I hope the more expensive ones will last longer

    I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years and I went from active to passive like 5 years ago and I'll always play passive as my preference.

    "nobody likes emg". Yet a lot of guitars keep coming out with emgs.

      They in fact do. But I think generally guitarists have been staying away from them for the past however many years and have been leaning towards passives or fishmans. Thank for writing!

    They do one thing really good, better than most other pickups: Noise reduction. They just don't care about their surroundings, not even the highly praised Fishmans come close to them. So for homerecording they are a great choice for eliminating at least one of the many reasons why your signal humms.

    3 of my 5 guitars have flunece moderns, the other two will forver stay with EMGs. As much as I love the fluences and the wide range of tonal possilities I can get with them, theres just something about the growl and punch of EMGs not to mention the crystal cleans that can be had with EMG 60s.
