Hi! I'm Kiwi! I'm someone who just loves plants and animals, and is in a fortunate position to be able to be surrounded by so many, so I wanted to share the goings on on our farm, and with my partner and my son's wildlife rescue endeavors. They are both licensed in wildlife rehabilitation in New York, and mostly work with small mammals currently.

This young possum was trapped by accident by someone with a squirrel issue, so we took it in. It appears to have likely fallen prematurely from its mother's back and has built up a massive parasite load so step one of its recovery is giving it a thorough cleaning to get rid of as many as possible. grosssss!

Do you have a warming plate or something? I am just waiting for a duck to hatch as well and I will build a little warming cave with heating blanket. Very cute!!
Yes! I use a seedling warming mat that I place under the towel because it's a bit safer than using the heat lamps, though ceramic bulbs are good and if you use a mercury vapor bulb they can get heat and also UV which is good for their development if they aren't able to get outside time. I just uploaded an update showing how far they've come since I recorded this 😊

I thought it‘s just another cute opossum eating fruits like grapes but omg the Cockroaches😖
It is pretty gross to us as people but insects are an important part of opossums wild diet and these guys were being raised to return to the wild. Gotta teach them variety!

A snack is like chips, popcorn or even a slice of pizza but coachroaches that's gross
I have learned they feast on lots of bugs including ticks .
OMG.. I almost gagged when you fed them cockroaches! Aren't you afraid the roaches will get in your house? 😳 BUT the opossums are adorable. 😊 ❤
It is very shocking seeing an animal go to town on bugs like that haha. The species of roaches I raise need to be kept in a very warm environment to survive and have babies, so if any escape they don't live long especially during the winter.

You can take em on shoulder rides and homing train them, then they can walk around outside and come to you if they need help or you need to move em.
Yep they are actually pretty nice animals. We do rehab for rerelease into the wild so we try to not make our animals TOO friendly towards humans cause they can get killed if they are too trusting of other people and lots of folks see them as vermin.

Possums aren't very bright creatures and also have pretty bad eyesight. This was their first time experiencing the outdoors and I suspect tensions were higher and it was a startled reaction.. These guys grew up together but as they were reaching adulthood their hormonal changes made them start developing more defense behaviors. Thankfully they also have very tough hides and can take quite a bite and walk away unharmed - keep in mind part of their survival strategy is playing dead where they might still be bitten and have to be able to walk away afterwards.
They have bad eye sight and they could smell/hear the dog, it is why cars present such a hazard for them , the mixture of playing dead when frightened an poor eyesight is rough. They have been around for over 33 million years almost unchanged but modern man poses a huge danger to them.

I don’t think it’s good to let them go back on their own because they don’t know how to defend for themselves and they’re used to being and took care of by humans and they don’t live that long. I think they should stay with you.

Possums are like mice, very dumb, skittish and not really capable of defending themselves from anything, they get by in life by reproducing at an astounding rate and having a low body temp mixed with a brain size that is one fifth the size of a racoons.
