Variable types, study hypothesis, p-value and hypothesis testing
Просмотров 992Год назад
When to do what statistical tests depends on the types and distribution of study variables. And off course, before conducting any significance test, you will need to have a study hypothesis. Then what are the variable types, what is study hypothesis, what are the hypothesis tests and how to interpret a p-value? This short video will discuss these in just 15- minutes! A simple discussion on the fundamental concepts of mathematical modelling of infectious diseases with a focus on COVID-19. Hope you will find it useful. This is the first of the series on mathematical modelling. In future parts more technical aspects of mathematical modelling including how to do that using statistical software and packages will be shown. Please stay in touch. If you like the vi...

Randomisation in Excel | Epidemiology in Minutes | EpiMinutes 7
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.3 года назад
Randmosiation is an efficient way of allocating study participants in different arms of interventions. By doing this, we try to control for known and unknown confounders, which eventually strengthens the internal validity of a research. In this mini-presentation, I have shown how to do randomisation using Microsoft Excel. I have shown how to do both simple and block randomisation. Also, the vid...
Randomized Controlled Trial | Study designs | Epidemiology in Minutes | EpiMinutes 6

Randomized control trials (RCTs) are the best form of study designs involving primary data collection, especially for finding any association between exposure and outcome. Although it cannot be applied for all exposures or interventions, and can be quite time and resource consuming. In this mini-presentation of EpiMinutes, I am giving a brief overview of the very basics of RCTs, with an example...
Case-control and Cohort Study Designs | Study Designs | Epidemiology in Minutes | EpiMinutes 5

Case-control and cohort study designs are both very useful observational but analytic study designs. The fundamental difference between the two designs is the way you choose study participants. Both the designs can be applied in studies aiming at finding an association between an exposure and an outcome of interest. However, you may need to choose one for various reasons. Case reports are the simplest forms of epidemiological studies involving individuals. A group of cases having similar health conditions forms a case series. Both case reports and case series provide an excellent description of a particular health problem. But they cannot test a hypothesis or prove an association between an exposure and outcome. Why? …………………………………………………………………………………………………… Let's ...

In cross-sectional studies, we take snapshots of particular health problems in populations at given points in time. Cross-sectional studies are very good at measuring the burden of health problems, which further inform resource allocation and planning. But they may not be as good for finding a causal relationship between an exposure and outcome. Why? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………. L...

      Thank you for your question. I did the permutation manually. Given it was a block size of four and combination of two As and two Bs, the six possible permutations could be done manually. For larger sized blocks we might need a software to do that. Even artificial intelligence can help these days. 🙂

    At around the 7:16/18 min, you say (encircling on the slide) that the investigator assigns who gets what treatment. If the investigator assigns who gets what, doesn’t that make it a quasi experimental design? Since the participants are not randomly assigned to the groups. Since you went ahead to mention randomization, I can only assume it’s a language sth and u meant to say something else.

    • @epiminutesbykazi
      @epiminutesbykazi 8 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your comment. It is the investigators who assign who gets what in an interventional study as opposed to an observational study where investigators have no role on exposure assignment. Now, the investigator may assign exposure/intervention either using randomization or not.

    • @epiminutesbykazi

      You are welcome. You are right. Also, it is not on the causal pathway. If you are looking at the association between eating burger and heart disease, then high cholesterol in blood will not be a confounder as it is on the causal pathway.
