you're Japanese is very good! Thank you!
Thank you so much! And thanks for watching!
Life in Japan can be heaven or hell. Let us know your experience in Japan. I've been through ups and downs, but you have to filter through the good and the bad.
Thanks for the video. I haven’t been there for about 20 years. Been avoiding it due to so many visitors since. My good mate is dragging me back there in a few days time so will be interesting to see what I remember and how it’s changed.
Appreciate it! It's definitely changed since 20 years ago. But more tourists means more options for restaurants and after-ski fun. I'm sure you'll have a great time.
I wondering how to get the Nakasendo app? Looked but couldn't find it. Do enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Thank you! You should be able to find the Nakasendo app in the Apple/Google app store but might have to just copy and paste this kanji 中山道 which means Nakasendo. Some apps are regional, so, you might have to change your region to "Japan", download the app, then you can change your region back to your country. Here's how to change regions (just from a quick Google search) To change your App Store region on an Apple device, you can do the following: Open Settings Tap your name Tap Media & Purchases Tap View Account Tap Country/Region Tap Change Country or Region Select your new country or region Review the Terms & Conditions Tap Agree Select a payment method and enter your new payment information and billing address
Excellent video. I would love to go there some day.
Thank you! Definitely a cool place to visit if you're in Japan. And an easy trip from Osaka.
If you have done the temple stay, which temple was it and how was your experience?
Great content mate, thanks for sharing. We are arriving in 10 days. My sons will love the van food!! Any recommendations for a restaurant to book? Family of 4, two boys 10-13. Any help would be great.
I appreciate it! You guys will have an awesome time. We always go to Yamagami Shokudo for yakiniku you can grill at the table and the giant gyoza platter (you can see this place in my other Hakuba video link below). Uncle Steven's Tex-Mex have great jalapeno enchiladas and the poke taco salad is really good. And gotta get a margarita! ruclips.net/video/laehtEdU1-Q/видео.htmlsi=0wzvVGzyJTF0jvUd
@ Class!! Thanks mate!! Will check out all your content!

Loved it! Thanks for sharing this. Super inspired and pumped. I might do it this coming May. Thanks again...All the best with all the other adventures.
I appreciate it. I think May is a good month for it. Don't hesitate if you have any questions. Best of luck on your adventures too.
I did a short journey from Nakatsugawa to Nagiso in one day, but I am really looking forward to trying this entire journey someday! Your videos would be a great guide, thank you so much! Really enjoyed following you through the entire trail!
That's a great section! I still have to go back and see the Nakasendo Museum in Nakatsugawa. I appreciate the compliment and glad you enjoyed the videos. Gotta Kumano Kodo one coming soon!
great, love how the nature was
Love this video series. I’m planning to fastpack this in November. Do you have a link for the App? I can’t seem to find it?
Here's a link to the app. It's in Japanese and costs 490 yen (about US$3) but well worth it. Glad you enjoyed the videos. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.groundbase.nakasendo&hl=ja&pli=1
@@getting2knowjapan was looking for that too. Hard to find. Sadly "not available in your country"
@@dennisaskeland5870 I have that problem here in Japan since my Apple acct is linked to a US card. You can change your region, download the app you need, then change back to your region. Not too much of a problem. Here a link how to change regions. ruclips.net/video/vk0uDF-pdtA/видео.html
Wow I got here from dangerous ways to school. RUclips algo
This is crazy inspiring. I am planning to walk from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2025. I have done some long walks and my biggest fear has always been the wild animals. Glad you did not run into Mama Bear.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I've actually see your walking videos before as well. It's a great way to see Japan first hand. Good luck with your Tokyo to Kyoto walk. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions. There's a FB group for Walking the Nakasendo that has a great bunch of folks.
Last year when I was on my way to Zentsuji temple, my hosts and I had the surprise opportunity to stop and tour a small family-owmed tatami shop just like this one. I didn't get to meet the owner because he wasn't feeling well, but his wife showed us all the machines, and showed us her old tools from back when she used to sew the tatami by hand. It was a very cool and unique experience. My Japanese was so limited at the time, so I'm glad my hosts were there to help navigate our conversation in the moment 😅 I hope that lady and her husband are doing well.
It's cool that you had the chance to stop in and see a tatami shop. Something not many people have a chance to do. Definitely a unique experience and glad you enjoyed the video.
Great memories with your daughter!!! Awesome video!
Thanks, buddy! Time with the kids flies by. I know you're almost done but just have enjoy it while you can.
For those who have been to Sado Island, what was your favorite thing to do?
what do they do if a boy wants to wear a pink cover up or a girl wants towear a blue one?
They wear the uniform they’re supposed to wear. Keep that lunacy out of nursery school.
@@dawnvalentine74 I agree!
I just watched this and really enjoyed it. My only question is when you canped out where did you poop?
Pink/blue uniforms and hats, absolutely adorable. I wish we had school uniforms for kids like that in the US
ahh finally! looking forward to threading those same steps.
You'll enjoy it for sure!
@@getting2knowjapan must say though, that purely visually this does not hold a candle to my native country Norway. It also seems like quite a hassle to hunt for campgrounds. Especially for someone who doesnt speak Japanese fluently. Still it calls to me and feels like a worthy waystick fo saying you have "walked a country" its a shame i cant do the whole stretch only having 2 weeks. long time dream has always be to do the walk "kintaro walks Japan" walks but that is even less plausible :p. Perhaps that would be a nice challenge for you. In this video it almost looks like you didnt break a sweat doing this walk.
I love these videos! We visited Japan in March and it was awesome. We were mostly in popular touristy destinations. I dream one day I can walk at least around some parts of the Nakasendo trail.
I'm not usually the lone wolf type, but the days in the woods on my own were so peaceful and walking through small villages reminded me of why I love Japan. You'll make it back here at some point for sure.
It definitely brought up a lot of memories watching this. Loved hearing about the trips to the creek!! Fun times!!
Those were the good ole days, man. We had some great times.
Did the Nakasendo back in August - watching these vids has made me particularly nostalgic. You were lucky with only the one leech from the Usui pass. I ended up with THREE in my shoes! That pass I figured out you could literally stop and stand still and watch them come out of the ground and approach you like some sort of horror movie. Also: I did see bears. Not anywhere with those installed posts but fortunately on the other side of Kisogawa so they are about.
Glad the video brought back memories! Yeah, I didn't stop walking at all over the Usui Pass and still had a couple of leeches latch on at some point.
@@getting2knowjapan I got caught in a typhoon at night when approaching Suwa and ended up with trenchfoot and I still remember that more fondly than that fucking Usui Pass!
@@BigHappyCaptain For some reason, Usui Pass was a tough go. Maybe it was because it was the first mountain section coming from Tokyo. The next episode when I walk through Nakatsugawa was one of those typhoon days. Wasn't cold but I was soaked for a few days.
What was your favorite part of the Nakasendo and any towns that you want to visit again?
Beautiful video 😊
Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for sending that over on facebook, Paul! Super super helpful and a fun watch too :)
No problem! Glad it was helpful.
Looking forward to the next part!
It's coming along and should have it posted shortly.
Hard to find that app. The secrets seem to be held my those who master Japanese still. By the way, would karuizawa be a good start point when i want to walk to magome or even kyoto. Got 2 max 3 weeks. If i had 5 weeks i would of course so the whole thing.
For the Nakasendo App, just copy and paste this kanji for Nakasendo 中山道 and you should see it. It's a pay app but only a couple of dollars and well worth it. And no need to understand any Japanese since you just follow the GPS route. Many people here in Japan use the Yamap app for hiking in general but I'm not sure how well it can help navigate the Nakasendo. If you need to cut out a few days, you could start at Yokokawa. From there it's a day hike over the Usui Pass into Karuizawa, which I'd recommend. Yokokawa is a nice village with one of the few Nakasendo sekisho (check point during the Edo Period) and just a quaint mountain village in general. If you need to cut out more days, maybe cut out some of Gifu Prefecture (except Sekigahara, which is an important historical town) and some of Shiga Prefecture, particularly from Hikone but pick back up walking just before Lake Biwa.
Great information, thanks for sharing 😊
My pleasure!
Beautiful video! Congratulations! How can I buy a tatami made with igusa, for sleeping?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. If you live in Japan, just find a local tatami shop. Not sure what country you live, but sometimes you can buy through Amazon or a local import shop. Most of those will be made in China.
Is was too late to join you walking to Tokyo Skytree. I think it's a kind of crazy thing to do but nice to try for you. I moved back to Japan from California in 2008, and I moved to Sano City almost 3 years ago. Your RUclips popped up today and wanted to talk with you soon hopefully. Because I saw many videos about yellow tiles for blind people without enough explanation. I hope you can make that kind of videos which no video is telling about deep Japan. From Takako
Welcome to the area and thanks for watching! Yomogi-yama and Hikoma are both nice areas for weekend activities in Sano. Walking to Tokyo wasn’t the most scenic hike but a fun adventure. I’ll look into the yellow tiles as well. Definitely something that many people don’t know about.
Sorry for late response. My friend just return to LA yesterday. During her stay in Japan we had a reunion with her and other wives used to live in LA. FYI, the braille yellow block had conceived in 1965 then installed in 1967. That designed so that blind people can feel it on the soles of their foot. Straight line: going forward Dotted tile: Warning for pedestrian crossing or stairs
Hi, do you have more information on your nakasendo hike? Is the majority of the trail still preserved or do you walk a lot on modern roads? Did you camp a lot? Thank you!
If you're planning to do the whole Nakasendo, days of walking through urban areas from Tokyo to Takasaki and another few days passing through Shiga and arriving in Kyoto. There's everything from a few faint remnants of the Nakasendo's history to museums to restored buildings and towns and even locals that I chatted to whose families lived in the same place along the Nakasendo since the old times. There are some modern roads to navigate but some towns have restored feudal lord lodgings (called Honjin), info about the town's history, etc. but it's all part of the journey. I think about 7 or 8 nights of 18 were camping. I'm in the process of making longer version RUclips videos now that will show you more detail of the actual walk. I'm almost finished with the first segment (Tokyo to Karuizawa). I'll try to get these done and posted ASAP. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Did you "drop in" at lodgings in the evenings? I read that that should be possible in summer. Especially at camp sites. I will do this but a little lighter i believe. Will save kgs by bringing a lanshan 2 900g tent and less clothes. Most hikers recommend only a single set of underwear it seems ! You think it will be alright to start a little later than you? In thinking to start at the end of June.
@@dennisaskeland5870 For the Kaikatsu Club Comic Cafes where you can rent a booth and sleep, I just showed up and they're pretty much always available. For the business hotels and campgrounds I stayed, I called the day of or the day before. Actually, campgrounds are sometimes crowded and full during summer weekends especially 3-day weekends and when kids are out of school. If it's a weekday, they're pretty much empty. The end of June will start heating up. From Tokyo to Gunma, it'll be hot, but once you get into Nagano, it should be fine. And for clothes, I took several day of underwear and socks, but there are places to do laundry here and there. Best of luck and don't hesitate if you have questions. I should have Parts 2 and 3 of my trip on RUclips in the next few weeks.

Very nice. I love my tatami mats
Same here!
Does it get a mattress on top and what is a good kind for that
@@naturelover1284 Most Japanese that sleep on tatami floors use a futon set (thin folding mattress and a comforter (kakebuton) to cover up with.
Thank you for sharing! I’m doing the Nakasendo soon :)
You're welcome. Best of luck! It's a wonderful walk.

In Japan, parents know their young children will not be physically or mentally abused while in school by the teachers, unlike in the US.
I hope they wash all the fruit so you don’t drink the pesticide
I see your daughter in the videos speaking Japanese. Was she born in Japan?
Born in the US but been in Japan since 4 years old.
Looking to hike the entire trial too! Is there anything I should know and how long would it take to hike from Kyoto to Tokyo?
You need at least 18 days and that’s without any rest days. Pain management is important.
@@getting2knowjapan Thank you for the duration! What about accommodations? I understand that camping is not allowed in Japan officially so did you book accommodations online and at where? Also, what about encountering bears?
@@jiajinchan6150 There are several campgrounds in certain areas of the Nakasendo and the few campgrounds I used didn't require a reservation (At 2 places I was the only customer). For hiking the full 550km Nakasendo, I think it would be difficult to plan where you'll be each night. In the few days of hiking from Kyoto and Tokyo, there are plenty of options ranging from net cafes and business hotels, but in the more popular areas like Magome/Tsumago, expensive ryokans or camping inconspicuously are the only options. I didn't book anything in advance and just winged it day by day but checked online when I took breaks or planned things out the previous evening. I even camped in a lady's yard one night (with her permission, of course)
Hi. Thank you for your Nakasendo series & congrats on completing it! How many miles/kms per day did you walk on average?
@@olagalaw Thanks! I appreciate it! I averaged about 30km per day. On more mountainous days when I could only do 20-25km, I tried to make it up on the flatter areas. I didn't take any rest days in my 18 days, but I'd recommend rest days, or time to explore areas that you're interested in. I live in the general area of much of the Nakasendo, so, I made notes of areas that I plan on going back to explore more.
美味しそう!
