Il Caro Sassone era veramente un grande compositore. Questa sonata ha solo archi e basso continuo: e la sua bellezza risiede proprio nel suono scolpito di questi strumenti! È irresistibile. L’Ensemble cesella gli “affetti” in modo nitido e profondo. Molto bella l’interpretazione delle protagoniste in particolare di Cleopatra. Ma io preferisco la scelta di Hasse. Un contralto per Marc’Antonio e un soprano (castrato, oggi un ottimo controtenore) nel ruolo di Cleopatra. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍😍😍

Johann Adolf Hasse was born in 1699 near Hamburg but moved to Naples to study opera seria with Alessandro Scarlatti & Nicola Porpora at barely 21 years of age - this particular ‘Serenata’ (typically hour-long operatic works played during grand Dinners whilst patrons ate, gambled & talked) ‘Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra’ was written in 1725 and was his first major success - carefully written to suit the voice of the infamous castrato Farinelli (who played Cleopatra) and had to make severe adjustments for the ‘dramatic but very weaker’ voice of Vittoria Tesi whose ‘dramatic action’ on the stage was superb but ‘spoke through most of her music’ - Hasse’s later triumphs included Artaserse several years later that made him a household name and guaranteed him a lucrative position as Court Composer at Dresden at a salary 60-times that of J.S. Bach slaving-away & pulling out his hair in Leipzig - and in 1731 married soprano Faustina Bordoni who also had worldwide notoriety commanding ridiculous salaries for her singing & acting talents - Hasse is greatly overlooked by modern audiences (he composer over 60 operas, more than a dozen of which are still technical masterpieces-just incredibly difficult to sing-or stage to-day) - but was still actively writing operas as late as November 1771 with Ruggiero written for Milan being his last (compos’d at the age of 72) - he is more than worthy of study & modern performance
I honestly wonder why we’ve got student productions of Mozart, Haendel and sometimes Vivaldi operas, yet fruitful composers like Caldara, Hasse, &c… don’t seem to get genuine care at all. And I’m talking about higher institutions, not mere local conservatories. They’d be interesting work for musicology/composing students who’d like to transcribe scores. Vocally, the works may differ. I’d say any opera seria pre 1740-50 are doable by bachelor level singing students. Caldara made some operas for amateur nobles. If I’m not mistaken, Mozart’s Mitridate is even harder to sing than a lot of pre-Mozart Tenor roles.

I've just found this Hasse version of Anthony and Cleopatra. Superb video and Audio clarity. Recently i have become much more aware of just how good Hasse was and the two singers and ensemble really do him justice. I especially love the aria and its orchestration from 32 mins in... Just beautiful. Many baroque compositions from such as Hasse, Vinci and Porpora and others sound very modern. Thank you.

@@camiloumana4542 I do not think we will have an agreement on this issue. I am a scientist by training (analytics!?). In the last movement, I did not hear any calm or relief when accepting one’s own death. I hear one guy is running out of breath, so try to rush everything to the end.

Bravo, I have been a big fan of Zelenka's sacred works, but this is the first time I listen to this missa. Is it usual to conduct while handling a violin? I was afraid lest he crushes it.
Back in those days, the orchestra was led either by the continuo, from the harpsichord or else the violin
@@nottinghillad Specifically, back in Zelenka's days, the concertmaster was the composer and violinist Johann Georg Pisendel, who would have lead the orchestra - unless he was sick or off vacationing to Vienna somewhere.
I slogged through this just because it was Zelenka, but it's a muddy amateur recording, and you can't really tell whether the singers are any good or not. If you want Zelenka (and you should), stick with Vaclav Luks. However, you might check out the Benedictus (ca. 40:00) for its orchestration---true Zelenka.
"stick with Vaclav Luks" ... what about Adam Viktora? Luks has a great portfolio, but In terms of number of CDs Ensemble Inégal has done far more for the Zelenka revival than any other band, and at no less quality. Also Inégal will be releasing a disc with exactly this mass on very soon! And to be fair on Musica Aeterna, I think this was a fine performance, just badly recorded.
i don't care. I thought it was a wonderful performance and that Benedictus was just out of this world. I imagine in his, and Bach's day they maybe were not as highly trained as performers today, and this how their music would have sounded. Beauty without flaw is the greatest flaw, and the viola in the Benedictus was just spot on
