He was speaking Engl-ish
Idk what the fuck is wrong with yall, im not a native speaker and i understand what hes saying. Its cute old man things.
I grew up in NC which is southeast in the US and I understood this perfectly, actually not far off from old men with deep southern drawls 😂
Yeah this was definitely made by an American
Since im white i can understand him just fine
Wow, he perfectly recited the lyrics of a Cocteau Twins’ song! It goes “Wykafjopjelsi fiscurdopsyd” as well. That was one of their best songs. Gee, I never knew Tolkein was such a fan of 90’s alternative music.
Which was supposed to be difficult
he's a British Biden
Is he Ozzy’s father?
"he says an hedge is an hedge, he only chopped it down cause it spoilt his view."
Can we get a translator in here? Actually… scratch that we need a priest
It's some form of elvish...
He sounds in English like Janusz Korwin-Mikke sounds in Polish
I am very much concerned of the fact that i have understood everything. Am i a Churchill's grandson or what
…. I was ver ver drunk at the time
It was a bit like the story in Dark Souls games; It is English and you can make out bits and pieces. And there is a chance you can figure it out by reading texts. That is all that is certain.
I can make out most words with slight difficulty
I would imagine that his Students would have understood his lectures, but would have had to listen closely and concentrate.
So that's where Gandalf gets it
Legend has it that He Is The Only Man Who Can Speak Joe Biden.
I’m a full blooded Asian with English being my second language and I understand him perfectly
I understood it all on x2 speed - just normal english
As an englishman i understood it
Tolkien sounds like the kind of man that would go around chopping down other people's hedges without permission.
I mean, I got the gist of what he was saying and I‘m not even a native speaker
.. I can perfectly understand this. He mumbles things. But it's clear enough to understand
Does nobody understand his fast speech? Because it’s not exactly a mumble. I can clearly hear each word. It’s just he’s not putting a space in his words vocally. Easy enough for me to understand.
Just cuz he was a good writer, doesn’t mean he talked too good
You just need to get on his wavelength. It all makes perfect sense.
As a non-native speaker, I am very proud of myself to understand a third of his words
I tried to read him back in the hippie 1970s, along with Herman Hesse and that fraud Carlos Castenada, but I found his fantasy world more boring than the world we actually live in. But then I'm always out of step. That's what keeps the bridge from falling.
You can't tell me this man was not geeked on some level
He Used Our Family Name in the First Book Without Consultation.
Sounds fine to me.
Pretty understandable to me
I can understand him quite clearly he just occasionally dips into mumbling too fast, so I don't quite catch every word
After being around drunk Brits... yeah this is definitely English
I don't understand the title. He spoke clear, well educated English. I'm confused if you are not a native speaker. I enjoyed him saying there were times I would have loved to make contact with the tree and find out how he feels about things. Tree beard is real
"...I was very, very, drunk"
He’s speaking old English. After all, he’s the elected professor of Anglo Saxon
it's anglo-saxon you dweebs
I've had conversations with 80 year old cowboys who were more coherent.
Obviously he was speaking Elvish.
jesus christ even in a clip less than a minute the dudes on about trees.
So this is how English sounds to people who don't speak it...
Hilarious. I watched this video 20 years ago and didn't understand a word. I have had many english remote co-workers since then and this time I understood everything. Maybe not verbatim, but I understood what he was saying.
Hes literally just stuttering, that's just an old guy speaking English
Honestly not hard to understand lol
'I couldn't hear any of it, of course. I'm afraid I was verr, verr, drunk.'
