Denver’s “reward” for winning the WCHA playoff was a trip to Yost to play Michigan. Granted, UM had to play the day before but still a tall order. Denver was probably the best team in the country that year but this was a tough matchup for them on the road.

He beat two All-Americans on that play in John-Michael Liles and Ryan Miller.

They almost met again for the NCAA title in Albany that year but both teams lost their semi-final games: MSU to North Dakota, and UM to Boston College.

Marty Turco is the Best College Goalie ever. We had many wonderful memories having season tickets and remember 1996 and 1998 having seats section 111 row 4 right behind and to the left of the home goal. Marty's dad Vinny Turco used to sit next to us and Brendan Morrison and Billy Mucult's parents sat in our small section too. GO BLUE , HURRAH FOR THE YELLOW AND BLUE !

I was at that game, and we NEVER SAW IT COMING! Every game against State and Miller went the same way. State would score, and the game and the rest of us were put to sleep. The Michigan fans were loud, and always behind their team, but SOMETHING always went wrong for Michigan State to win. Plus the SPARTANS always GOT THE POWER PLAY to win the game, late in the 3rd period. They beat Michigan something like 7 or more games in a row. And then on that night, somehow Michigan hung around, and got a goal in the last seconds of regulation. The go to the 5 minute overtime, and BOOM, MICHIGAN SCORES, and the roof blows off the JOE LOUIS ARENA! There were M fans up at the top, STILL SCREAMING 30 minutes after the game, behind the M Band. WE COULDN'T BELIEVE that we had FINALLY beat the Mighty Ryan Miller, who made all Wolverine hockey fans, silent and walking home with a LOSS! This period of the rivalry taught this Michigan fan a great lesson. SOMEBODY'S GOTTA WIN, SOMEBODY'S GOTTA LOSE!

I forgot all about Matt Herr. I could be wrong, but I think he played for NFA in the Bear Mountain league a year or two before I played for Cornwall. That was such a cool feeling knowing someone from our small corner of NY could make it. Good luck Matt with whatever your doing now.

@hemphrey Actually since Michigan was wearing yellow in 2002 at Yost, they were the higher seed that game. The previous year in 2001, Michigan wore blue as the lower seed but the game was in nearby Grand Rapids, it was not at Yost.

Ahh yeah, I remember this game was in the same series as the first game I ever covered with WOLV as a freshman (I was the cameraman then). We lost that one in overtime but i was still really impressed with how incredibly loud Yost was.
