Billy Joel - Where's The Orchestra? (live, Night at School)
Просмотров 59 тыс.15 лет назад
Billy Joel performed this piece 1982 on the MTV show "Night at School". This video (the whole show!) was originally uploaded by user coolvideo76 (thanks a lot!), I just singled the song out of it. Enjoy.
Emm Gryner - Beat It (live, Michael Jackson cover)

Emm Gryner (www.emmgryner.com) does an awesome cover of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It', live. This great video was originally uploaded by user beyondpalefires, I trimmed it a little with iMovie and made it brighter. Enjoy.
such a great song
Love this song - and while it's a better song than and *extremely* similar to "The Simple Joys of Life" - I still think it's distinct from it. I WILL admit that I hear the transitional (ie: non-"For the Longest Time") chorus section from "The Prime of Your Life" in the introductory part of this song. But this definitely remains one of his most underplayed and unjustly unknown songs of his from ANY of his albums! And he does a killer rendition of it here. 👌
I LOVE this show! Harry Anderson, Markie Post, John Laroquette - I had no idea Billy Joel had a role on this...I mean, I always KNEW he was funny, but I didn't know he had an ACTING part on the show! (And let's not forget to mention the new version on NBC now with John Laroquette, Melissa Rausch, etc.!) 😲 So - what was Billy, like, the court musicographer or something, like, he played incidental music when the witness was recounting his/her version of the story at the trial? Or was he just there, like, at the downstairs cafe to entertain the legal-related staff on piano or something like that? Oh - YES! THAT is why he had that "Keeping the Faith" video set in a *courtroom!* That makes the video even FUNNIER now!! I can just imagine the scenes that happened between Billy and Judge Harry, something like, Harry tells him to make a *note* of something, and Billy responds, "Well, Your Honor, if you want, I COULD make a whole *song* out it!" 😁 As the late, great Chris Farley might have said, "Yeah - that must've been AWESOME!" 😝

Is Billy Joel is he the only one that ever did MTV night school was it like one show and that was it?
There are some artists that rise to the top level - a rare top level. It's where not just the general public but accomplished artists as well respect and revere their talents. I remember when Billy entered the scene way back when. First thing I thought after listening to him is...oh man, this guy has a lot of talent - he's got to go to the top! Saw him in concert doing a Paul McCartney imitation that sounded like vintage Paul. Then he did a Paul Simon bit that arguably sounded better than Simon -lol. Ah, Being a fan of both, I followed him through the years. The amazing thing was he constantly topped himself! His lyrics were second to none - and I mean none! And he had impeccable taste in his music His songs covered the gamut of music spectrum. His voice is a joy to hear and his piano playing is out of this world. Even this rare song is so beautiful and underrated. To me - as far as an American Artist is concerned, he was our Beatles!
Sung just like it should be
the curtain falls on empty chairs. where's the orchestra?
How the hell have fans not listened to this all the time. ... the movie star that never faced an audience...
Probably his third most beautiful song; after Summer, Highland Falls and Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.
You can say the same thing after most every Billy Joel song and not be accused of hyperbole - genius.
Good Lord, this is good.
One of my favourite songs to play on the piano, just beautiful how he chooses complex chord movements throughout. Also really good to see how even the man who wrote it gets it wrong and recovers when he says "And i assumed.... " A true professional, rescued it without anybody knowing.... Those of us who have learn this song over the years!
very tom waits. great song
Beautiful homage to Golden Slumbers. :)
Superb!
Oh How I would have loved to have been there
Did he ever find out what section they were in?
Great song. Never got much p.t.
closing his most Beatles-esque album with a touch of Harry Nilsson, but in his own Billy Joel New Yorker kind of way. couldn't have done it better. also, that looks like Christie at 0:24, and this was either right before or just after they had met. she always said that this was her favorite billy song. her face in this video says so too. what a beautiful moment
Guac i’m not sure who it was but it definitely wasn’t christie, she has a more square face
I don’t think that’s Christie
@@KarenLeos91 yes I think I really wanted it to be Christie to fit the narrative but you may be right...
@@KarenLeos91 maybe Elle? Didn't he meet Elle, Christie, and Whitney Houston at the same time?
It’s funny how he sang “so I was wrong” right after he hit some different chords that are not on the recording.
Yes, and he seems to acknowledge he played a wrong chord. No matter. Great song on a great album. The way this little song is beautifully worked out is ingenious, but that's nothing new for Billy.

I hope that Mr Joel get to read this comment someday. You spend a lot of time pointing out and giving credit to very accomplished musicians. It might not mean much me saying this but you need to understand that this composition puts you in that category as well. You are a genius too.
What a music angle.
Anyone else watching this in 2017?

Yes
2013,14-15-16-17-18-19-20..... Poi si vedrà
I love how he uses intrusive r's in this song. It's so sophisticated. Example: He sings "Even though I have absolutely no idea R at all". Nice touch.
Like Brendar and Eddie
@@billmuller1469 haha I really like that part scenes from an Italian restaurant. I try to do it too but at first it was hard bc English isn’t my first language so I couldn’t get it right but I eventually got it with practice lol
Thanks his New York dialect.
What a beautiful song!
Great Vid. Keep em' coming Tiff Jimber Indie Musician and ewok lover
man, chaka, I really do like you.
And if you listen to the studio album, you can definitely hear Allentown... just perfect, bringing his masterpiece full circle.
The Allentown ending brings a tear to the eye... The Nylon Curtain is by far his best work, and in interviews he agrees. Just epic...
Prefer stranger but definitely nylon curtain second and third turnstiles or piano Man
I love him so much. This song reminds me of my mom. I love you mom!
me 2
Beautiful, but I prefer the recorded version for its amazing instrumentation.
The whole song is among his best work ever, but 2:07 to 2:18 is classic Billy tying you up then setting you free. What an amazing musician
And it sounds like it's straight out of a Broadway number. What a brilliant song.
I have purchased the albums, the cassettes and the CDs. I am never without Mr. Joel in my house and my car. Thank you for going your own way and listening to your heart. It has touched me.
Love billy Joel! Wish that more people my age liked music like this (I'm 16) something awesome happened today-last year I sent a letter to billy Joel and he sent back an autographed picture. Made my day :)
That's awesome! I know this was 3 years ago but how did you manage to send something? By the way, I'm in my 20s and I grew up listening to artists like Billy Joel, the Carpenters, etc. so you're not alone there. :)
I'm 16 in 2020 I too am looking for friends who appreciate his music. Although I do hope you found your friends :)
as a 16 going on 17 year old in 2023, i agree!
The Nylon Curtain is just the most superb collection of songs. Where's The Orchestra has those beautiful chord changes only the great songwriters like Jerome Kern, Tom Jobim, Matti Caspi, Brian Wilson and the like know. Fabulous songwriting from Billy with superb and interesting lyrics.
julbim This album, The Stranger, and Glass Houses are in my opinion the best albums ever written.
@@bigpoop3073 Turnstiles.
Of course, "to round things off nicely" he said when he released this.
I would say ironic, too. There is a slight reprise of, "Allentown" near the end of it.
Bravo anche senza orchestra
she kinda looks like Karen Gillan
Billy Joel has "jokingly" said in several interviews that he started making music "for the women". Good Lord has he succeeded! Look at the woman's face at the 2:00 mark (she's really pretty, too). I would do nothing BUT play if I had such a gift!
In awe of the music.
