Depending on what you mean? What is played is exactly the same (for comparison’s sake). And if you listen on phone speakers, the presets may also sound pretty similar. But if you use headphones or real soeakers, there definitely is a sonic difference. 😃

They are amazing! A close contender would (IMO) be Arturia Pigments, but they are also very different in vibe/feel so there is really room for both! 😃

Yeah, Microkorgs are great for many things, but acoustuc piano is not where it shines the most. Keyscape on the other hand… 👍

I do remember the original SG Piano sound and will probably always associate it with 90's pop music in one form or another. Bt it sure has its own vibe that is great for some things. 👌

This is just my personal opinion. I like the EP’s and Keys presets better on the XL+. And I like some of the synth sounds better on the new Microkorg 2.

@@SoundsLikeThisGear I guess I'm on the same track EP wise, the XL+ takes the lead but due to the 2 oscillators IG, the synth patches can be built stronger Too bad the DW for EPs and Organs are too limited, whatsoever, was meant to be like that. on the long run for some cases I'll be planning to pair my XL+ but with a Roland MC-101

Have had mu eyes on an MC-101 for a while, but may go for Zenology Pro (should be the same sound banks).

@@SoundsLikeThisGear I've done some research and the capabilities + the size of the MC-101 looks like the perfect pair for me when I need to perform without a drummer, also the sounds are very nice! for the size and price, some part said: "a small very portable synth" and looks like it. For the very strange cases, having it with the XL+ for extreme portability looks like a good gamble for me. I'll have to do a lot of work an loans to get it

Yeah, I think it’s a great library of sounds. An alternative might be Yamaha’s SEQTRAK: ruclips.net/p/PLkGHDTvF4ccfMez8WJd4j9qsYnNcwK5mg&si=um18Wtheg92ktYQL It has a similarly vast and versatile library and possibly a slightly lower price tag. But you need to use the app, as it has no screen. So may not be as intuitive in a live setup.

When I first tried tye OG Microkorg 20 years ago, I had the same feeling and skipped it. Then last year, when I started this channel I got a pre-owned Miceokorg XL+ (the one used in the videos). And after a few months with that, I all of a sudden found regular-sizes keys huge and chunky! 😆

Long story... :-) I had no real plan when starting out, so the first bit for this one I did was just a Logic Drummer trap beat that I thought was fun at the time. Then, it hit me that I had to use the same tracks to make shootouts for comparison. But I agree that was annoying so I have actually changed it since then. What you SEE in the video is a MicroKORG XL+. I used that when shooting the original video - and it's the same video snippets in virtually all demos. But the audio was recorded as MIDI, and the sound you HEAR in this video IS indeed from the MicroKORG 2, which was triggered by that particular MIDI file recorded that day. So, your eyes are correct, but only your eyes. ;-)

I use the exact same clips and MIDI files for two reasons. 1) I gather the videos on categorised playlists that work as shootouts between different synths. For instance this one is here: ruclips.net/p/PLkGHDTvF4ccdRiyMamXeVZ55KVT13m6nc&si=-hPG55t4mK9ddTGo Since they use the same MIDI file and backing tracks it should be easier to conpare. 2) It saves a lot of time, which means I can create and share more demos (historically at least one new demo a day, which would not have been possible if I should capture new video every time).

Absolutely. I have just always had a 'browsing through the factory presets' session where I often formed a first impression. In most cases, this first impression stuck, but in some cases I have also found that there were much more under the hood than what the presets revealed.

The model I played in this video was marked 'Prototype' back in May 2024. I also just got a production model this week and while i recognise the vast majority of presets from back then, you are correct that some have changed. I guess this was expected to some degree from a prototype to production model. I don't think the preset from the prototype that didn't make it into the production model are available.

Not sure when that happens, but it would likely be a good deal if you can get a pre-owned model in good shape at that price within the next year or so. I just ordered a brand new one to get some proper demos of it uploaded asap.

@@SoundsLikeThisGear Nice to hear from you! For now, I'm thinking about how to layer synth sounds. They are on separate channels, and I would like to control them from the Juno-DS. Not a DAW, no iOS, just pure MIDI. I don't know if this is possible?

Unfortunately, I am not deep into the workflow, as I (for now) have only been using it for creating the audio demos. But according to a post in a synth forum I found, you can't remap the MIDI channels. So, you would have to be able to switch the MIDI channel you send on form the Juno DS. I guess that's possible - the questions is probably how deep you have to dive into the menu to do it. Also, if you don't want to use the iOS app, you should make sure to go through the sounds and mark the ones you want to use as favourites. As you likely know, the iOS app is the display for SEQTRAK so without it, you ned to select and memorise the order of the sounds you want to use in the favourites bank. Hope you'll have a great time with SEQTRAk and Juno DS! 😃

@@SoundsLikeThisGear I don't know if the other microKORGs have a synth like that, but I had the microKORG XL and it had another arp that sounded like the Macarena synth. I'd play along with my music, and use that synth to give the songs a Macarena vibe.

@@SoundsLikeThisGear I also have the microKORG XL +, but I don't use it, since the sounds on the XL are 100 times better than the ones on the XL+. On the XL, the arp is called Party Arp. (A / Rock/Pop / Arps) Turn the arp off.

@@SoundsLikeThisGear Yeah. Unforunately, Korg never bothered to make it possible to move patches between the Keytar and the XL+, which is kind of stupid. So you can't use any Korg or user packs on the keytar and have to recreate everything manually.
