So wait can someone explain the difference between the first stitch or “waistcoat stitch” versus the normal single crochet? I’m confused how it makes that little V shape like a knitted pattern??

With the waistcoat stitch (which has many names, including the knit stitch and split single crochet), tension is everything. Make a conscious effort to relax your hands and pull that second loop a little higher before finishing the stitch. If you crochet tightly, it will require physical effort to get through the stitch. That can get painful very quickly.

I make an with my yarn X around my index and middle finger and then insert my hook under the first string and pull the second string through and then tighten it! I've always liked this method since it's similar to how I make a magic circle.

There is a fourth kind of single crochet stitch: the crab stitch. It is worked like a regular single crochet, but instead of continuing to the left (where you would ordinarily go), the next stitch is worked to the right.

Granny squares...they got me to improve in crocheting all the basic stitches and tension. I then went to Tunisian crochet for beanies and now Amigurumi.

“0.5mm doesn’t make a difference” Check your squares. The one with the slightly larger hook was a good half inch or three-quarter inch larger than the square with the smaller hook. With each stitch being 0.5mm larger than stitches made on the smaller hook, even a project with just 20 stitches would add 10mm to the size of the project, almost a half inch difference in just twenty stitches… which would make a *huge* difference in a larger project, such as a blanket or sweater. Size matters. 😋😋😋
