Part 6 Wake Atoll Natural Sounds Circumnavigation: Marina to Wilkes Causeway
This segment covers Wilkes Island from the channel north of the marina along the sea walls and shoreline, past the 1800 swimming/snorkeling area, and on to the Causeway at the Submarine Cut.
Some folks think that Wilkes island is everything north of the submarine cut, but it’s actually everything north of the marina. For some reason the Japanese thought it would be advantageous to cut Wilkes Island in two so they could get submarines and boats into the lagoon. They got about halfway before the atoll was retaken.

Part 5 Wake Atoll Natural Sounds Circumnavigation: AT&T Cut to Marina
Просмотров 94Месяц назад
This section covers the long southern sore of Wake, from the AT&T Cut (favorite snorkeling and party spot!) along the isolated reef and sea walls to the Marina. Shelling is usually poor along this section, although a few treasures have shown up during my visits(Pacific triton trumpet!). About 50 minutes into this walk I found a glass float perched between the blocks of one of the sea walls! The...
Part 4 Wake Atoll Natural Sounds Circumnavigation: Runway south around Peacock Point to the AT&T Cut

This section to the circumnavigation goes from south of the runway around Peacock Point and on to the AT&T Cut. I have found a number of glass floats along this shoreline, the currents seem to be just right to bring them through the gaps in the reef safely to shore. Large Imperial cones frequently wash ashore here, and Peacock Point is the only reliable place I’ve found to find spider conchs, a...

This is Part 3.5 of the Natural Sounds version of my Wake Atoll circumnavigation. It overlaps a portion of Part 3, but also goes a little bit farther down the beach beyond the Air Terminal and past the Runway. There’s some nice spots for shelling here, as well as the occasional glass float. The beach cleanups that have been going on for the past couple of years have managed to keep the trash th...

This is the Natural Sounds version of Part 3 of my circumnavigation around Wake Atoll. This segment goes from Pet Cemetery to the beach across from the Air Terminal. This is the gentlest section of the island, and as it’s still on the windward side, Japanese glass floats wash up along this section regularly. The shelling can be very good along this shoreline as well.

Part 2 of my circumnavigation goes from Pirate’s Cove to Pet Cemetery. This is the windward section of the atoll, with string onshore winds almost all the time! Had a request for the Circumnavigation videos without the music and I’m happy to oblige! Now you can hear the crunch of the gravel under my footsteps, the calls of the seabirds, and the crash of the waves. (You also get the wind, which sometimes can be overpowering for the microphone, and my wheezing, because I’m out of shape. If only I did as much walking at home as I do on Wake!)

Peale Island WWII Shore Defense Gun, Wake Atoll, October 2024
Просмотров 3363 месяца назад
In January 2024 a rogue wave struck Wake Atoll. On Peale Island the Shore Defense Gun was hit by the powerful wave. Already listing, the wave punched in the side of the carriage and it collapsed under the weight of the gun, which toppled over and now sits upside down next to the carriage. The ocean is working to sink the gun further down towards the water.

Johnston Island: A Walk Along the Eastern Shore
Could you please let me know how the sea wall got broken up like that?
@Foldisfitch Just waves over time. Seawall maintenance hasn’t been done in a long time.
Thank you for your efforts! Enjoyed the video.
Pretty cool how those white birds light up in the sky when the sun hits them a certain way and then disappear. I thought I was seeing UAP's there for a minute.
Hi, Looks like you were there in February 2024. Were you on the island very long? Did ship wait for you to complete inspection or come back for you? Where did you stay? Any idea why those bunkers are so tightly sealed while others on the island not at all or at least not as secure. Must be a good reason why you were asked to check vent pipes. I'm so curious. Hopefully you were not left there alone to do that work.
Hi and thanks for watching! We were only on the island for about a week and the boat stayed and waited for us. We slept and ate on the boat, so we had good food and (reasonably) comfortable bunks! The bunker inspections are required under the RCRA permit from the EPA.
Hi Guys, What was the purpose of your return visit, and how long did you stay. Were there other people staying there at the time you arrived? How many people were with you? How long did the ship stay docked there before presumably leaving you there. Fascinating video. Thanks so much for posting it.
@@edmorin2879 Hi! Thanks for your questions! The team was tasked by Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) to conduct a runway survey for a potential project that would do some landings on Johnston. We stayed about a week and the boat stayed docked at the wharf the whole time. We slept and ate on the boat. The boat has room for a dozen passengers. No one has been regularly staying on Johnston since about May/June of 2021 when the last Crazy Ant Survey Team from US Fish & Wildlife left.
Hi Guys, I am happy to hear that runway may be put back into use. I'm sure all of that was expensive to originally build and in the event of an air emergency in the area it could be a life saver. Hopefully never needed but so valuable if it ever were needed. I have watched a bunch of videos from from the ant survey team members and thought one of them from a young man was more recent than 2021. Apparently not. In one of the videos the fellow showed a row of bunkers about a quarter mile long that were locked and had a large concrete block in front of the doors. Looked like each bunker had a vent pipe coming out from the top. Did you ever investigate that area? Just wondering why the team that closed up and abandoned everything years ago would take so much effort to seal those and leave other bunkers open. Did they leave equipment in those that they might want to use one day? Perhaps vehicles or something that would be too expensive to haul away but too valuable to just leave and not protect. Perhaps chemicals. Just curious about the whole place. Looks so beautiful. When you were there years before, did you have a way to call for help if you became injured or very sick? How many people were with you at that time? So curious. Hate to be a pest. Thanks so much for your response. Much appreciated for posting the video and for taking the time to respond. Ed
Please keep 'em coming!
@Foldisfitch Got 2 more to complete the walk around the atoll!
@@AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames Great!
Very much enjoyed the walk around, but can’t help thinking how precarious some of your steps were… I’m sure your surefooted and all, by the sounds and looks of the Video👍 do take care… love the sounds of your footsteps in the coral, lava? and sand. I am, so envious and grateful at the same time, that you’ve taken the time and energy to video and post your journeys 🙏 looked like you were catching a little dive bombing too… Do you know what was that big cement slab near the end used for in the past?
i think that was a causeway to the other side of Wilkes lsland , looks like you get a jeep across it during low tide. I could be wrong though.
Always superb vidéo. I enjoy a lot
Was curious about this ok the asbestos thing but it seems solid enough that interior could be purposed
@@ericjenkin7461 if roof maintenance had been kept up it might still be repurposable but it hasn’t. The interior stairwell above the second floor is disintegrating and the supporting beams and floor joists are rusting pretty badly.
All the asbestos was abated during the decommissioning of the island all floor tiles and acm materials like fireproofing was removed
Great walk!
When the Island was active, they would dump tons of waste food in the water weekly and thousands of shark fins would appear from miles away heading toward the trash and then creating a vicious circle of feeding for hours. It was small fish and sharks at the top and huge ones at the bottom. I sure wish we had iphones back then, it was a sight to see.
Thank you for another wonderful video !!!

Thanks for another great video. Is that building a hanger for aircraft ? That is quite a walk to Peacock Point.
That would be a no. It holds ice cream…
@@ericvonp Ice cream is important on Wake!
@@mark-ib7sz no, there aren’t any hangars for aircraft on Wake.
This was the section of your walk that I was most interested in seeing as you traveled right past the area where the old FAA housing and school were located. Our house was right on the shoreline so I spent a lot of time there boogie boarding, fishing and just searching for what might have washed up on the shore from the night before. I knew I wouldn't see any remnants of the housing in your video but it was still interesting to see how much the shoreline has changed. To think that there was such a vibrant community living there only to have it all return to nature makes it so bittersweet. Thank you for all your efforts in making and sharing this series of videos!
are the bunker filled with hazardous or chemical product ? If not why dont they let the bunker opened
@@Lavabo-Quebec These bunkers are filled with building rubble. The Air Force dug traditional landfills to put the building rubble in, but the Army put all theirs in these bunkers. There’s no hazardous materials in them anymore, except lead paint and maybe a little non-friable asbestos like floor tiles.
Thank you for another wonderful video. Any ideas on concrete blocks at 38.39 ? Is the plastic trash as bad there as Midway island or Johnston island ? Have you been to French Frigate Shoals ?
That concrete block is actually a WW2 pillbox. I didn’t get good video of it, but it’s been filled and mostly covered with sand and gravel. Maybe next time I’ll get videos of all the pillboxes along the beach. I haven’t been to Midway yet, so I can’t speak to that island, but there is definitely more trash on Wake than on Johnston. Beach cleanups happen quite frequently on Wake, but even still they barely manage to stay on top of it. They just don’t have enough manpower to keep it as clean as we’d all like it to be. Peale island is really bad though. They don’t have a good way to get the trash off of Peale so it just piles up. Haven’t been to French Frigate Shoals yet either. Someday!
Hello, I am wondering how did you get the autorisation to visit those US pacific island like wake, midway ect, I am interested. TNX
@@pierrel.8245 I work for the Air Force. I’m over the Environmental Restoration programs for Wake and Johnston, so whenever I have a project going on I’m there. I haven’t been to Midway yet though. @@AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames Do you know the world of amateur radio communications?

@@pierrel.8245 we go every couple of years to conduct inspections and collect environmental samples and monitoring.
There’s nobody living there now.
Glad you got to visit but I thought Wake was restricted to the National Wildlife Federation and Government types. Did you get some sort of (dock permit)?
I’m surprised they don’t keep the runway somewhat operational as an emergent landing spot
DOD should clean up the runways for any situation that may arise like military or civilian aircrafts. Still be an excellent coast guard station like 👍 it was before ww2.
Should get the seabees and clean up the runways on Johnston atoll. Then be able for any situation that may arise for military to civilian aircrafts.
Enjoyable walk!
@Foldisfitch It is! I spend almost all my free time walking the shoreline when I’m on Wake.
Nice video, I don’t miss the travel…
Thank you for another wonderful video. Was that a concrete gun emplacement at7:40? Interesting graffiti on rock , I could not figure out the language. You must have a very interesting job to get a chance to visit all these islands. Thank you again and I am looking forward to your next video.
@@mark-ib7sz Thanks for watching! There are several gun pillboxes along this section of shoreline, but what’s at 7:40 is something else I think. Typically they wouldn’t have had small guns out in the open, exposed to the weather and enemy fire. The pad doesn’t look big enough for something like the shore defense gun on Peale, but maybe there was more to it at one point? I think it was an anchor pad, perhaps for an antenna or tower, but maybe some else knows otherwise? The language on the rock is Thai. There is the date 12-12-12 at the bottom. Someone told me what it supposedly said once, but I don’t remember what it was. Perhaps Google translate could tell us!

The years I spent growing up on Wake in the early 60's were amongst the best of my life. Although its unlikely I will ever return to the island, your video was the next best experience. I can feel the sand and coral crunching beneath my feet. I can see the old bridge that we used to jump off into the clear waters. I can smell the shore break lapping on the rocks. I can hear the cries of the seabirds as they swoop amongst me. I can taste the saltiness of the air cooked by the heat of the sun. But most of all....I can remember. I hope to have them all finished and posted by Christmas. Be sure to Subscribe if you haven’t already so you don’t miss any of them!
Yes, they are Japanese bunkers from WW2, but it’s not rising sea levels, it’s about 80 years of coastal erosion that’s causing them to slide closer to the water. If you were talking about the line of large concrete blocks in the channel in the first part of the video, those are remnants of a causeway the Japanese built between Wake and Peale during WW2.
Thank you, that answers my question . I wonder if any of those bunkers were built by the POW civilian contractors like the airplane retevments at the old airfield , before the October 1943 massacre.
@@mark-ib7szthat is very likely.

So what is up with all the personnel on Johnston atoll? Before was limited access. I think DOD is rethinking the usage of the islands. The question I have is was were all the buildings contaminated that needed to be torn down?
@@melheinrich5438 we were there for a runway survey and site inspection. AFRL is thinking they might want to use Johnston for some upcoming tests they are planning. The buildings were not contaminated (although they did have lead paint). The Air Force just didn’t want to worry about the hazards and liabilities that an island full of collapsing buildings would bring. Better for all to make a clean sweep of it and remove them. They left the JOC to serve as a potential hurricane shelter.
@AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames My opinion is when DOD deactivates a base like Johnston, should think about the possibility of reusable of the future. Just like Wake and Midway Islands, would be cheaper to upgrade than to start from scratch.
If it's lead paint I think that is a stupid idea because we've still evolved by not scratching it off the wall. @AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames
