In this video we look at the Ponziani from the white and the black side. It's a classic and interesting opening with some solid and some very sharp lines. Black can get a good equality if they have a good understanding.

Thank you for posting these recent videos . Once again really nice explanations of these variations.
Thank you Gary. It's always great to hear from you. I hope you are well and enjoying January!
Thanks Simon. So helpful to have such a compact summary of some of the possibilities. Any chance of the equivalent analysis for the Caro-Kann defence? I see 1...c6 and my brain freezes
I'm only in the 700s ELO so looking for a few easy to remember moves. I'll try c3 then d4 in my next couple of games and see what happens. Thanks for the ideas. I'm sure better players will understand more than me.
Great to hear from you. c3 and d4 is a solid and sensible choice. We were all 700 ELO one day and also, we are all here to enjoy chess, whatever the grade.
Nicely done Simon. Good to see you are still making the videos.
Thank you Gary. It's great to hear from you buddy :)
Very nice game Simon. Good to see you back . How is the dog btw? Will he be making an appearance in the near future? 😊
Great to hear from you Gary. How is your chess going? Have you got a game for me to feature? We will get Chewy back on soon. He's well. Just taking him out for a walk!
Great to see another Caro Kann player in action. Daniel Varney used to play the fantasy variation against the Caro so I did go quite deep into it.
Thanks Liam. Great to hear from you. I learned a lot about the caro from you when we were playing side by side at Cumnor. You know it is Stockfish's second favourite defence to 1e4 (after 1 e5). I hope you and the family are well.
BTW the "three pieces for a Queen" line sort of shows what the idea behind Bc4 should be - to try and get e5-e6 in quickly and crush Black before the pubs open. IMO if white doesn't try to do that the bishop just becomes a target to be hit by Na5, b5 or d5. So Qe2 is logical but leaves the d pawn even weaker than usual, and in practice black doesn't go down the "three pieces" line very often anyway as whatever the machines say practice shows White's position is easier to play for humans - so instead of 6 ... Nxd4 it's normally recommended to play 6 ... Nd7 (fairly simple and at least equalising) or 6 ... Ng4 (more complicated but probably better for black). Bc4 variations in the pure Pirc aren't popular with GMs; in at least of a couple of my Pirc books Bc4 is relegated to the "Other Variations" chapter.
That makes perfect sense Ian, very insightful 👍🏻🙏🏻☺️
I have always had trouble against the Pirc, it annoys me!
It annoys me too Liam. It’s annoying! Joking aside, it’s a tricky opening to play against. It’s sound and black often gets a lot of counter-play. What do you find difficult about it Liam?
Rather than learning a proper line against the Pirc, which is something the average club player might meet once every couple of seasons, I just play bog standard Closed Sicilian type of moves against it. e.g. 1. e4 d6 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. g3 g6 4. Bg2 c5 5. Nge2 Nc6 6. O-O Bg7 7. d3 O-O 8. h3 Rb8 9. a4 It's nice and asymmetrical so hopefully White will be able to find something in the middlegame.
@@gallicrow Much of the attitude in the Pirc can be summed up by it's nice and asymmetrical so hopefully Black will be able to find something in the middlegame...
The main problem on the black side is white has a lot of good set ups. But from my view it means you get a different game every time. If I have to face it myself I usually play the Austrian attack, but that's mainly because I put so much use into learning it on the Black side that I might as well get full use out of that effort.
Very interesting@@gallicrowand a very accurate line (after 2 Nc3 which as we have established I don't approve of). It's a clever plan and I've always had a soft spot for the closed Sicilian from the white and the black side. There are some interesting, strategic ideas and it is not so concrete that you need to learn lots of lines by heart.
Bxa2 was the major thing I missed OTB in the game. So obvious when the semi-conducting monster points it out. Otherwise 25 ... Qd7 was part of the plan to free the c5 advance so getting rid of an uncomfortable temporarily backward pawn, which I didn't want to do with the Q on c7 because of Nb5. After 25 ... Qd7 26. white-does-something c5 27. Nb5 Qxb5 28. Rxd5 Qf1+ is uncomfortable for white and drops a pawn. So I was initially worried about the pin down the d file but I probably spent more time on that move than any other to work it out. I also guess the machine wants b5 to stop c5. Funnily the threats down the d file eventually materialised, 32 ... Bf7 was because if an immediate Rd3 I suddenly realised white had Nf5+ which (wrongly) I panicked about. Finally I won't rise to your Pircist diatribes 🙃
Thank you Ian, very insightful. On the Pirc, I did say it’s not mathematically losing and I have to admit that you won. Well played!
Thanks Simon, we have had many good games over the years.
Thank you for the game Simon, and sorry it ended up like that. I was grovelling towards the end, I felt I was worse due to my weak pawn structure, despite the computer claiming the queen exchange was OK. I'm looking forward to our King of the Hill match, hope the the 5 days move time takes off the pressure. Good luck with your maths content. I like watching @numberphile videos and math puzzle videos from @MindYourDecisions.
Thank you Alex. I love Numberphile and also the PBS Series 'Infinite Series'. I'm really looking forward to our King of the Hill game!
Thanks for covering this one Simon. It seems Bc2 was the start of the downhill slide. Well played Simon . Thanks for playing.
The engine likes e4 there Gary but that's a hard move for a human to make. Bc2 looks natural but yes the engine starts to prefer black at that point. Thanks for the interesting game. Here's to the next one.
Hi Simon - good to see you the other day with Chewwy. In the problem if black can get Qf3 in he is doing rather well ...
I am pretty happy as Black in our position, I have just wiggled the bishop out.
Yeah, I see that LIam; I think it's pretty balanced.
Nice microphone
Thanks Buddy, good to know.
Simon , agree our Englund Gambit game is a mess. Theory says white is considerably better which means that this Gambit is just nonsense . However it does throw up some interesting positions. Thanks for humouring me. 🙂
That's lovely and very modest Gary. I was going to do a special on it in the next video. If I can work out what is going on!
Are you able to play a daily correspondence game while playing other games? I thought it would be nice to play correspondence to those I have previously played, like a big family.
These videos are so instructive. They are a regular part of my day now. 🙂 Thanks Simon.
Thanks so much Gary. That really means a lot to me. I just said in the last video that I am not going to do one every day for a bit. But maybe I will now 😀😊
Dark secret of the Benoni: many endgames are won for black due to the q side majority. Often the more pieces, especially minor pieces, that come off the better black is.
First
Simon , moments after I offered the draw I asked myself why I didn't just play h4. It may have some potential ? I spent a long time looking at various moves but concluded that I couldn't find a win.
ncie
You play the Benoni against the KID 4 pawns and then about 3 games later say you won't play the Benoni because you don't understand it! I know consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds but at least give my aged mind 1/2 a chance to forget...
I am going to have to offer you a draw very soon Simon. The way to win is beyond me!!
It will be accepted immediately but you are also within your rights to try. I'm not sure there is a way to win. I THINK I've seen a position like this at elite level and the side with the rook won but I don't know how to win it....
Great fun. The bullet game I mean . ;-)
Thanks for the encouragement Gary :)
Simon I am a man of my word
I never doubted you Liam.
Superb Bullet play from you Simon. Commentating at the same time is very impressive.
That's very kind Gary. To be honest that is me on a good day. I've had plenty of bad days. I know people (including me!) frown on bullet and the impact on our relationship with chess but overall I think it has been very positive for me - good for my brain.
Simon , what is ,or who is Horde Coach ?
Horde Coach is one of the top players in Horde. He (I've seen his RUclips videos) challenged me and may have heard about the account from EsTnatic who is also an expert in Horde. I stared the series with a bit of a Horde obsession :)
General I will only play the Albin counter gambit in Blitz, we are probably going for a Queens Gambit declined.
Thanks for the match Simon, I will take a good look tomorrow at the analysis.
13.c5!? does creat an odd impression. I guess it fixes black with a blockaded weakness on d5 and claims the pawn on c5 supported by the f2 bishop is a strength.
That makes perfect sense Nick; thank you. Also white can claim a queen’s side pawn majority in many endgames.
I think our game will be a draw. Happy to keep plugging away at it.
Simon , just going back through our game and it seems to me that your 17. Be3 was inaccurate. I was fortunate that you allowed me to play a position that occurs in the Sicilian ,my choice of defence against 1.e4 . 😊 Would 17. Nd5 have been better for white ?
That makes sense Gary. We can take a look properly with the engine when you have beaten me but yes 17 Be3 may well have been the problem as your combination came right afterwards. You are playing the Sicilian against 1e4? Amazing opening. It does suit you.
Simon. I started playing the Accelerated Dragon earlier in the year and now mix it up with the HAD. The engines don't like it but it gives black good chances to cause imbalances in the game. With you playing e4 a little later this brought about a Maroczy bind position which I have studied a lot.
Yes @@garyloyden5327 that makes perfect sense. Accelerated Dragon players see a lot of Maroczy binds. It's a great choice because it avoids all of the 3 Bb5 (+) lines (versus 2...Nc6 or 2...d6) that are so trendy at the moment and take the game in a more solid direction.
Some very instructive games going on here Simon . Thanks for posting all of your thoughts on these various positions. Very helpful listening to your thought processes.
Thank you so much Gary. My thought process right now is that I'm going to lose my game against you AS WHITE. I've not totally given up but feeling the pressure; some great play from you including that early combination.
The material imbalance in our game is interesting Simon. Thinking of offering you a draw as I have a feeling your B pair will come out on top.
You've played really well so far Gary. I honestly think the position is pretty equal. There are aspects of it that make me nervous. The spirit of these games is relaxed and easy going so whatever you think is right. Since it is you I would probably accept but also happy to play it on or play another..
Well no harm in playing on I suppose. As you say it is all about learning so lets keep going. @@chesswithsimon6214
Thanks for the game Simon. I’ve been learning so much from watching your daily videos. Feels like I had a big advantage by watching your videos and getting ideas from you on what my next move could/should be. I also spent at least an hour on every move! Lastly I hadn’t realised that you can access the players database during the opening to see which moves have the best outcomes! I learned so much. Thank you :)
You played really well Mark. I had a quick look on the engine after I resigned and actually I was losing before I realised I was losing. 18 Rb7 was wrong although in retrospect, I see why. I'll take a proper look at it in the next instalment. Please do feel free to challenge again if you have the time. I'm learning so much as well. You played a lot of precise moves. Well done; great win!
Ian's list of things to remember in the Fiancetto Pirc, Ruy Lopez structure: 1) after a4 knight to b4 2) Bc8-e6-c5-a6 3) d4 as a primary pawn break is more important than usual in the Pirc
It’s a good list Ian. I woke up this morning thinking that after d5 black has basically equalised which is very impressive because I usually get a lasting pull in that line. And yes that d5 break reminds me of the Ruy Lopez, particularly the Breyer defence. Let’s see if I can hold as white 😂😅.
@@chesswithsimon6214 What's your chessable handle (email if you prefer)? I might be able to show you my inspiration. But I have to admit I'm not sure myself if d5 in this particular position is sound! Bc4 was the obvious move, but I thought let's try something different.
The reason Lichess keeps going back to the same game is it goes to the game you have least time left, not the game which you haven't moved in longest
Thank you, good to know. I’ll think about how to cope with that….
I guess it comes down to this: can white attack d6 twice? If so, can black defend it with the knight? If so can the knight be kept stable or can one of the white rooks disrupt it? If it can't be kept stable then can it create some counterplay against the white king or pawns? And perhaps could the black king defend d6? It seems to me that there is quite a lot left in this.
At 3:49 could you play Rd8 and shuffle the king between g8 and g7; Would it had been a fortress?
That’s a great idea and it’s probably my main plan. I didn’t want to say it on air but now that you ask I’m not going to lie 👍🏻😆. But should the rook defend from the back or the side? I guess I need to make up my mind.
Hi Simon, In the game you are sacking the exchange to go into a rook endgame wouldn't Rd1 have been a better way of doing it? You worry about Ba4 but if you are exchange saccing then Bxf5+ Nxf5 exf5 Bxd1 Rxd1 is surely a better version, the black king is cutoff from the pawn wedge and if Rg2 then Rd2 as you planned in the line you played, but the black king is on c8 now, so you are a tempo up. But I have just woken up so I may be hallucinating! Ian
Good advice for getting out of the Bullet habit Simon. Thank you.
Community Gary, that's what it's about. We need to keep in eye on each other. I'm playing less bullet but now playing Horde. I'm going in the right direction. I enjoyed the games tonight; ours is very interesting.
@@chesswithsimon6214 How long does the time control need to be iyo in order to be beneficial ? I play a lot of 5 + 3 and I don’t think I get a lot out of the games at this time control. I enjoy playing blitz so I guess it’s all about having a balance. Thoughts please ?
I think I'm a bad person to ask 😆@@garyloyden5327 . I tend to believe that longer time controls are better for your chess and best for your chess is study. But chess is a game so it should really be about fun and friendship. I would choose the one you enjoy the most. Also, there is the social side. I have started this correspondence video because it seemed like a good way to keep in touch with a bunch of people that I really like ☺
See Simon - you too have your psychic moments:) But I agree, while there is nothing wrong with 3 Bd3 against the Pirc, Nc3 is the move to play if you are going for an advantage out of the opening. Now I have 8 preprogrammed lines in the Pirc game (so not much psychic power), which will you chose, or will you avoid them?
Ha ha Ian, I just saw this. I played what I thought was an offbeat line. I saw Karpov play it in a tournament in Montreal in the 1980s and unleashed it on Nigel at Cumnor a few years ago but you guessed it!
It's a good line. In fact it's what one of the classic Pirc books "Pirc Alert!" recommends for white if he/she wants the greatest return for knowing the ideas rather than a whole load of moves. And I agree when Karpov played it it looked irrefutable
Just for reference I am watching most videos but I don’t normally watch it until after I have played my move.
That's good to know Liam and very fair. You are also making some good moves!
@4:04 you are getting back rank mated there with Ra1, no?
Dear Ian, 1. a5 is the best place to start at in my opinion as it gets rid of the « rook shuffle ». The rook shuffle is something I even beat stockfish 8 with. Ultimately you will have to study less opening theory. I will play this « not good » (1. a5) a6 move to demonstrate the mechanics of horde chess :). Horde Coach
Hi Simon, Yes, I was screaming Bf4 at the screen :) The reason white doesn't play 8 Qe2 against the Taylor Defence is it wastes a tempo after 8 ... Bg4 9 h3 Bxf3 10 Qxf3 as the queen takes two moves to get to f3, and Black can transpose into a number of other variations a tempo up - bad for white in a gambit system! Hence white has to find a useful "waiting" move, and 8 Bf4 has been found to be best by test. Other moves are 8 b4, which is dangerous but dubious if black knows what they are doing, and 8 Be3 which is simpler than the other bishop move, but probably not quite enough to hold equality, Ian
3:30 am ????? Great series Simon. Certainly learning a thing or two from your commentary.
I know right? My daughter was out celebrating her A level results and I was staying up waiting for her. I'm really glad you are enjoying this. Our game is a really nice theoretical one. Let's see what happens next!
In the Bayonet Attack game I agree you shouldn't have took - Black is slightly cramped, why give him/her more squares? Ian "Benini Player" Bush
That makes a lot of sense Ian. I just made the most recent move at 3:30am and I'm a little worried that I am losing my way in that game but I don't think it is, yet, a disaster, unlike my game against you which I think is heading that way and might already be there.
Great series Simon
Thank you so much Gary and for being part of it. Community is such an important part of chess; it's fundamental!
