The "Points" game is usually shown as a one-person game. Sometimes there's a mention of a P2. But what about people with families? A one-way business class ticket to Dubai is great, but are you really able to get 4 or 5 of them at once?
My name's Ryan and I'm married with three kids. Taking five of us on a vacation isn't cheap! That's why we use credit card points and miles to help subsidize our trips - or cover them altogether. We don't focus on aspirational trips. We focus on getting our family on the vacations we can manage. We make the most of Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Citi Thank You Points, Capital One Miles to redeem for flights on Southwest, Air Canada, or Delta and for hotels like Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton.
I've learned how to take advantage of credit card companies instead of letting them take advantage of me. You can too!

I Earned 800,000+ Points in 2024 and You Can TOO!
2024 was a banger of a year! We earned over 800,000 points. We put a ton of those points to use! We went farther for less. Here's a look back at the credit cards we applied for in 2024 so that we could spend 50+ nights in hotels and take 15+ round trips flights.
You know about points and miles. Now come see how to really put them to use! Make 2025 a banger of a year for you and your family.
Here are some referral links for cards that I mentioned. Using them is a great way to support the channel. Make sure they're your best offers, but thank you in advance!

Credit Card Points Can Help In All Situations. Even Awful Ones.

Normally, we're earning points to take vacations, enjoy ourselves, and make memories. Sometimes, life has other plans. When you need to travel for an emergency, you can still use your points. Everyone spends more during the Holidays. Presents, trips, family gatherings, and dining out have us shelling out more than normal. While Nicole and I budget for the Holidays, we also work hard to maximize the rewards we earn on all that spending - to "pointify" that spend. Turning Credit Card Points Into Memories at the 40th Annual Lexington Barbecue Festival

Points are for taking our loved ones farther for less. Usually that means Nicole and the kids. I had the opportunity to take my Dad on a trip though. Me, my dad, and my brother traveled to North Carolina for the 40th Annual Lexington Barbecue Festival. The air fare was on points. The hotel stay was on points. The car rental was on points. Your points are only as valuable as you make them. I was...

Ahh, so many people want everything for nothing. The credit card baller’s!
I appreciate you watching. I guess I have a different perspective than yours. If credit card issuers, hotel companies, and airlines want to compensate you for your loyalty, than I don't see a problem with using that compensation. Does that make me a credit card baller?
Do you have a tax payment to make? That could help with meeting the minimum spend for a Biz Platinum.
I wish I did, but there have been reports of Amex not counting tax spend towards SUBs. Thanks for the thought.
Now I'm hyped for 2025!
I am too! I hope 2025 is great for you! Thanks for watching and dropping the comment.
there free nights reward are worthless stay away from company.
@@VinceSwenson I haven't had your experiences, but we've always managed to find value from our FNAs. I hope you've found a hotel brand that works better for you. Thanks for watching and dropping the comment.
Thanks for sharing all your experiences
@@MMSTUDIOS5 That's the best I can do. I hope my experiences can help you figure out what will work best for you and your family. Thanks for watching!
Speaking of focus....how about focusing your camera
@@Deadflush You ain't wrong. Thanks for watching anyway. It'll be fixed in the next one.
I like your videos especially because it doesn't have a lot of nonsense b-roll videos. A bit blurry but looking forward to the next one. It is also good to see someone who travels a lot internationally and values the value of a no-FTF credit card.
I'm pretty sure I've got the focus issue resolved 🤪 I appreciate you watching. The Savor Rewards would be strong enough with FTFs to have a place in my wallet, but no FTFs is a little "chef's kiss" on top.
What are you talking about “not a great earner”? It earns 17 points per dollar at Marriott Bonvoy properties…
@@bryantlong6522 It earns well at a Marriott property, but not so well elsewhere. And when you consider the value of a Marriott point . . . your spend could be better spent on another card. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
I have this card in my poor man’s trifecta (venture one, savor, quicksilver).
All that matters is if your set-up works for you. Everyone runs slightly different set-ups. Just make the most out of yours. Thanks for watching!
Great video!!! I noticed in your last two videos the focus or depth of field seems off. In both you have been a little blurry and the items behind you have been more in focus.
@ronburn Thanks for watching. You're right. I recorded them on the same day and tried a new setting. On the camera's playback I couldn't notice it, but it's definitely there. I won't be using that setting again!
I thought you liked to start a system with a larger welcome offer?
Thanks for watching! I do recommend that for someone just starting out, but when I applied the Welcome Offer for the Savor Rewards was elevated and the Welcomer Offer for the Venture X wasn't. This is the 25th card we've opened between Nicole and myself. We have some points to burn through, so we decided to slow roll into Capital One.
My order of booking hotels, usually only if it's not available. Hyatt -> Hilton -> Marriott -> Boutiques
I'm at Hyatt first and then Marriott. I earn status at Hyatt the hard way because there isn't a true short cut. I have Marriott status through the Bonvoy Brilliant. I don't travel enough to justify a 3rd loyalty status, but I know how good the Hilton Aspire card is. I'm sure that one day the Aspire will find its way into my wallet! Thanks for watching!
This is freaking awesome and well thought out, I am beyond humbled to even be mentioned, especially alongside a creator of Stan’s caliber. You listed some top tier talent here and people would do well to take your advice!
Thanks for taking the time to give it a watch; I appreciate the support! I'm glad I was able to move the conversation forward. Hopefully we're able to help someone go #FartherForLess
Hi Ryan! Great response video! Of course, I’m always happy to hear about different perspectives as that is how we all learn and become better. I think your point about considering welcome offers is a good one! I should have taken that into greater consideration in my list, although with the CCC, that card is so good for NAF, I think it’s multiplier (for someone with lower spend) trumps the lower welcome offer return on spend. I also like the WF Autograph card, but Citi is on a roll with the refresh from the Premier to the Strata Premier as well as its recent news to be the exclusive partner of AA as you mentioned! Finally, the Hilton Surpass card is awesome like you said! But if someone doesn’t stay at Hiltons it’s not so awesome anymore (unlikely, but still something to think about). Again, great video, and keep up the great work with the channel!
Stan, thanks for thoughtful comment and for providing the inspiration for this video. The CCC is such a good card, it really could (should?) be in everyone's wallet; it wouldn't be my first recommendation for someone though. And maybe that's the light I was viewing the topic in, recommendations for a first card. There are a lot of good things happening at Citi and they are an issuer to watch in 2025. The WF Autograph is a card I never paid too much attention to before the Journey came out. I think the Autograph would be a better fit for my wallet than the Journey because of where I put my spend. The (limited) introduction of transfer partners was a real upgrade for the WF portfolio. Agreed about the Surpass. If you have it, it needs to be a daily driver. Thanks for the watch! Keep up the great things at your channel!
Sapphire Preferred is so easy to get value out of.
Year One with the CSP is filled with value - especially if you can snag an elevated Welcome Offer. This time next year, Nicole and I will be looking at churning ours. Can't wait!
I think you should start with a catch all card like the Savor Rewards.
The Savor Rewards card is a great card, but I don't like to start with a catch all card. I prefer to start with a card from the system that has a large SUB to jumpstart the fun.
The savor isn't a catch all
@jcaceres516 Absolutely right! A great cash back, zero-dollar AF card - but not a catch all. I still don't usually start with a catch-all card though. Good catch. Thanks!
So what are you doing instead?
Moving on. Focusing on other transfer partners. Thanks for watching!
Ugh. Tough Break.
You win some. You lose some. Thanks for watching!
I've had Marriott titanium for 7 years and I'm close to lifetime platinum. I'm now focusing on Hyatt and IHG. Globalist sounds like the way to go.
@bkhunt69 1st: Thanks for watching and subscribing! I appreciate it! 2nd: I've had Platinum status for a few years now. This is my first year as a Globalist. TBH, I get more out of Globalist, but I can't always stay at a Hyatt. Do you notice a big difference between Platinum and Titanium status?
I just got the Freedom Unlimited and plan to use this as my default Costco card since it is a Visa and earns 1.5X instead of just 1X that the Preferred earns.
@@millennialmoneyprogress I do the same thing! Except for gas because the Costco Anywhere card gives 4% back. But I also product changed a Sapphire Preferred to an OG Freedom card for when the rotating categories land on gas or wholesale club.
This was a great, straight to the point and informative video on the trifecta, thank you
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I just got the Unlimited. Which should I get next?
I'd wait for an elevated offer on one of them. The Flex, Preferred, and Reserve all have base offers right now. And try to keep 3 - 6 months between approvals. Thanks for watching!
I stick with the Preferred over the Reserve.
I don't have the Reserve either, and I'm okay with that. Maybe we'll upgrade one day. Thanks for watching!
This is my favorite base set-up!
It's a strong choice - especially if you're getting started. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video. Thank you. I am getting this Trifecta for sure. Let me ask, if all I care about is Cash Back but not transferring points to travel partners, what would be your cc setup or Trifecta. And whats your favorite hotel card.
First of all, thanks for watching! Easy part first. Favorite hotel card: Bonvoy Brilliant. The best setup for Cash Back is a collection of 5% back, no annual fee cards: Amazon card, Target card, Discover It, Freedom Flex, Custom Cash, etc.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Thank you. It's been a rough time.
We spend so much more at this time of year!
I think we all do. There's so much going on at this time of year. Thanks for watching!

Stacks on stacks! Bring in those points.
It takes some time, but there are more points out there than you think.

Flip credit score and fraud protection.
Tough call. Doesn't fraud protection help your credit score, too?
I think extended warranties should be higher on the list.
Maybe, but they are all good reasons to use a credit card! Thanks for watching!
Funny thing if you choose Choice Wells Fargo also issues Choice's Co-Branded credit card but you'd get more points using the Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards points to transfer to Choice vs using the Choice credit cards
Go Fins! I never gave too much thought to Wells Fargo before.
It's always good to compare your options. Thanks for watching!
Maybe for plane tickets?
Thanks for watching. The airline partners have a lot of overlap with other programs, so it could be a good secondary system.
I'm not jumping on this, but thanks for the breakdown.
Not every set up is for everyone. Thanks for watching!
Hey folks I applied and didn’t get my card in the mail. I had to call CHASE directly and verify that it was actually me who applied for the card. HELP I don’t understand the timing. My card should arrive last week in October. How can I time my spending to get the Companion pass to last into 2025.
@@hahadarrie First, congrats. Second, I find that annoying and reassuring at the same time. Did you miss out on any large purchases for your SUB?
That's some major value from the SUB!
Sure is!
Where are we going next?
We've got like 5 nights coming up. Check the app! Love ya. Thanks for watching!
Great video! I'm currently debating on the Hyatt for 5 free night awards or the Hilton Surpass. I've enjoyed the Hyatt stays so far, but Hilton has better availability were I want to travel. Many times my family does road trips and don't stay in "big" cities where Hyatt's are located.
The Hilton Surpass is a good card too; it's basically the only card my parents have. Make the decision based on how your family travels. You'll be happier in the long run. Thanks for watching!
That's a great offer for the Hyatt card!
I think so too! Thanks for watching.
I love me some Hyatt!
It's not perfect, but I love it too. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ryan, I am just discovering the world of hotel CC's. As an AMEX platinum card holder, I have gold status with Hilton and Marriott. My question is; do you think it would be worthwhile to obtain a Hilton, or Marriott CC, or would it simply be redundant?
Well you certainly jumped in with both feet! Without knowing your other cards, it's hard to say. But the Platinum card doesn't earn points very well; it's not an earner - it's a benefits card. I think Hilton Gold is better than Marriott Gold, so I would lean more towards a Hilton card. The Hilton Surpass earns a ton of Hilton points and has a reasonable annual fee of $150 with easy to use credits. I'd look at that next. Unless you're a total baller and want to throw down for the Aspire at $550. Thanks for watching!
@@travelpointsfamily Thanks for the response. I was thinking that having a Hilton or Marriott card would be better "points wise." Just needed someone with more knowledge and experience than me to verify it. 👍🏽
You're welcome. I'm learning all the time too. I'm always trying to find new ways to go farther for less.
Hilton Diamond is crap. They don’t even give you any late check outs. Marriott platinum elite is so much better. Can’t best 4pm late check outs.
@@jnd2415 Late checkouts are great. There is a lot of value in the food and beverage credit that Hilton Gold status provides, but I'd pick Marriott Platinum status over Hilton Diamond status.
