Resilient Waters
Канада
Добавлен 10 июн 2020
Resilient Waters reintegrates vital wild salmon habitat by upgrading aging flood control infrastructure along the Lower Fraser River. We are doing this by identifying opportunities where the need to replace infrastructure aligns with important salmon habitats.
At the beginning of one of the most prolific salmon rivers in the world, over 1,500 kilometers of crucial habitat are blocked by aging floodgates, pumps, and dikes. At the same time, many of these structures need to be upgraded to prepare communities for climate change impacts such as flooding and sea level rise. The loss of salmon and threat of flooding are also leaving communities, and particularly First Nations, vulnerable to loss of food security, socio-economic development, and cultural loss. Resilient Waters hopes to do its part by collaborating with all who are affected to accelerate solutions that benefit salmon, ecosystems, and people.

Cultivating Flood Resilience: Farm Strategies to Benefit the Whole Community
Agricultural lands are disproportionately impacted by flooding in the lower Fraser watershed. With new (and old) tools at their disposal, the agricultural sector can play a crucial role in mitigating flood risk while benefiting farms, ecosystems, and communities when they are supported to do so.
Hear from local expert panelists on projects putting these practices into action in the Lower Fraser and around the world.

Bon Accord Creek Flexibaffles Bring Salmon Back
Просмотров 1 тыс.Месяц назад
In August 2023, 60 rubber flexi-baffles were installed in a 150-metre section of concrete flume in Bon Accord Creek in Surrey, British Columbia restoring salmon access to more than 2.5 km for the first time in 75 years. City of Surrey's Salmon Habitat and Restoration Program (SHaRP) partnered up with Resilient Waters, Watershed Watch Salmon Society, and SSA Environmental, with funding support f...

This video animation describes the function of four different types of common floodgate technologies and an approximation of their impact on water flow and fish passage. The four types include: - Top Mounted Floodgate - Side Mounted Floodgate - Vertical Sluice Floodgate - Self-regulating Floodgate You can see each animation seperately on our youtube channel with more detail. These animations we...
Vertical sluice gate - a solution for fish passage and water quality
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.Год назад
Sluice gates, when implemented and managed properly, are a fish-friendly solution to flood control. These gates may be operated remotely or manually and may either default to an open or closed position depending on the intended use. If defaulting to an open position, as in this animation, the sluice gate offers unobstructed passage to fish for the majority of the season. Fish only become isolat...
Self Regulating Floodgate - a solution for fish passage and water quality
Просмотров 334Год назад
Self-regulating gates are a modified version of a top or side mounted gate. They have a counter-balance mechanism, such as a float and a more buoyant gate flap that results in the gate being open more often, and for longer periods of time. The only time the gate closes is when the water levels on the river gets high enough to push the float up, which closes the gate. This means the default posi...
Typical Impeller Pump - a problem for fish and water
Просмотров 59Год назад
An impeller pump is essentially a fan blade that forces water through a pipe from the creek side out into the mainstem river. As one might imagine, this is not fish-friendly at all! Fish mortality with these types of pumps can be quite high, as fish get chopped up and killed, or injured severely, making them prone to predation and disease. There can also be drastic pressure changes inside the p...
Axial screw pump retrofit - a solution for fish passage
Просмотров 143Год назад
The fish-friendly axial pump features two fixed curved blades with larger spaces than a typical impeller pump. These larger spaces and curved blades allow fish to enter and travel through the pump with greater ease. The blades are paired with innovative guide vanes to minimize fish disorientation and limit extreme pressure differences. These are easy to install and can offer a simple retrofit t...
Archimedes Pump - A solution for fish passage
Просмотров 558Год назад
These pumps, which look like giant screws, rotate in place and act almost like an escalator for water (and fish). They turn at a much lower speed compared to impeller pumps, making them less turbulent to fish, reducing risk of mortality or injury. The screw is positioned tightly in the pump station structure to prevent fish getting caught between the threads of the screw and the walls inside th...
