    I'm not convinced your argument is on shaky ground, let alone solid ground. American is the largest economy and military power due to its size, but that doesn't make it anything other than that. Switzerland is recognised as the best overall country. Maintaining conflict and keeping freedom is dependent on perspective. A country with one of the largest military machines relies on poorly educated and easily compliant fodder. Too much education questions authority and political ideals. I agree that there is no place for mobile phones in the class room, but the idea that talking to people about random subjects is bad is barmy. Like wise, the thought that countries exploited by richer economies are filled with people dreaming to reposition their ethnicity is also questionable. Maybe the argument to be made is that a lack of critical thinking makes you easier to manipulate. That you need to educate yourself on gas lighting and political corruption, and that the vast majority of that is done through media and technology and is successful in manipulating the lazy and gullible.

    Do not discuss politics, *teach government*, it’s always going to hurt someone’s feelings because that individual thinks they are right or that mom and dad are right? I was brainwashed by my parents and made to believe this is the only way to think and let the children make up their own minds. It can become a very touchy subject for the rest of the year. Tread careful my friend, tread careful! IN MY OPINION 😊❤

    There’s no managing the sort of spoiled little brats you’ll be forced to deal with as a teacher today. It’s better that you find something else to do with your time because you’re not going to win this one. In any event most teachers will eventually be automated out of existence and replaced perhaps by youth leaders and tutors with lesser credentials as everything morphs into brick and mortar online academy including of course, baby sitting for the annoying parents who really only care that they not be forced to raise their own kids themselves.

    Sadly, the hidden costs to teachers are not revealed to the public. Teachers suffer from obesity, stroke, heart problems, heart attack, urinary cancers, women-related cancers, drug and drinking problems, mental illness, suicide, and death. The lack of medical awareness could immediately shorten your teaching career. Teacher have a high divorce rate which reduces their pension by 50% and only 6% make their pension after 30 years. The Swiss say it better to level early than to wait for events to foretake yourself.

    • @colestersclassroom-teachin105

      @23drcharles, Agree entirely. I worked in the private sector prior to teaching. It was much easier and obviously much more lucrative. I tell people all the time that teaching is basically going up on stage for 6 performances per day with 6 minute breaks in between - no other profession is as taxing on the body. When I bring guest speakers in for the set, most look at me at the end of the day and ask, “how are you able to do this every day?” Thanks for sharing your input. Have a great Summer!

  • @marcmeinzer8859
    @marcmeinzer8859 3 месяца назад

    I had the total opposite problem as a teacher or the problem of noticing that the entire educational system is a farce owing to social promotion and over-schooling of the masses of people who will most certainly never enter any sort of a learned profession. So in other words what you’re mostly doing is babysitting the bored anti-intellectual dullards who shouldn’t even be there after the sixth or perhaps the eighth grade if we’re going to be generous about it. And then it should be off to work to learn a trade. But it’s too late for me to become Amish and I never learned to speak German in the first place so that’s not going to work. I also noticed that I’ve done a good deal more reading than the typical teacher. But that doesn’t mean that I should’ve gone to graduate school to become a professor because I prefer to select my own reading material and there is no such thing as a doctorate in general studies. General studies is more of a major for football players. Other teachers would tell me that I was good with the kids which really meant that the other teachers didn’t really like to talk to the kids very much and just work-sheeted them to death. So I quit to ship out with the merchant marine for 8 years and then went to barber college. Adult barber shop customers are more fun to talk with than kids are. Barbers also have more time for reading than school teachers. After all, the teachers can’t read because they’re too busy baby-sitting.

My goal is to pass on what I have learned to other educators. I simply look at what I’m doing each week and/or the challenges I have faced each week and share thoughts on them that I think might benefit other teachers. Even after 27 years I’m still learning & growing. It’s a journey filled with many rewarding experiences like changing lives and many challenges as well. Enjoy it each step of the way. Good description of tenure. I disagree, however, with your description that corporate employees have due process. Unfortunately many (or most?) corporate employees are 'at will.' I don't have the stats at hand to back up this claim, but private industry jobs I have had were all at will, and while good bosses/managers will provide opportunities for an employee to improve, they don't have to. I've also heard this from many friends who aren't teachers.

    • @colestersclassroom-teachin105
      @colestersclassroom-teachin105 6 месяцев назад

      Thank you for watching. And thank you for the compliment. Great comment. The two are intertwined to some degree, but if I was to separate them, I would say the following. A teaching philosophy is the teacher’s pedagogy. I simple terms, the teachers belief in which strategies & philosophies are most effective in the classroom. For instance, I believe learning needs to be relevant. I’m a strong believer in cooperative learning. And when I use cooperative learning I like to pair students together who are at very different levels academically. The goal is to have a student who is strong in a particular skill teach a student who may be struggling. Both benefit. The struggling student may learn something better when presented by a peer. The strong student has to really take a deeper dive into the subject to understand it well enough to teach another. Another philosophy is “hands on learning” is effective. Teaching Philosophy Statements are often written documents shared with others as well. When applying for jobs in education, you may be asked to write a Teaching Philosophy Statement. There is a lot of information posted on the internet explaining what is involved with that. When I discuss teaching style, basically I’m sharing my opinion in regard to how to execute your teaching philosophy. In the example above, you can execute cooperative learning as both an extroverted and an introverted teacher. You can execute that strategy as both a strict teacher or a laissez-faire teacher. Where they become intertwined is the adaptations the teacher needs to make to adjust her/his personality and style into the teaching strategy. A introverted strict teacher is probably going to want to execute cooperative learning differently than a laissez-faire extroverted teacher. Both can use the strategy effectively, but it will look a lot different in each classroom. I hope that helps clarify. Thanks for watching! And keep being a hero to the future of America!

I absolutely agree there needs to be explanations for each question missed so that the student is benefiting from the test correction process. Thank-you for your input & thoughts regarding this. Have a great rest of the school year. And keep being a hero to our students!

      Completely agree that not all parents are going to support teachers. In cases like that, you need to document everything with referrals. However, before I start documenting, I reach out to the parents to see if I can their support. Some parents are very supportive. Some are not. However, when you are fortunate enough to receive parent support, it helps tremendously. Have a great school year!

    I hate authoriteye! I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the stiff arm of my teacher’s, my mom, the law, the Bible. It’s hard to take criticism when you’re awesome! In a weird way it makes us better or makes us aware in my opinion. I think there’s a certain degree of authority that each of us need in life to keep society from imploding. There’s always going to be haters, you know the saying that you can’t make every body happy. I had a comment telling me to sell my motorcycle that I didn’t know how to ride and join the circus because I was a I…. Stay diligent and firm in what you’re doing. I will pray for your haters that their eyes or ears be opened to your wise wisdom. Blessings, brother..

    I'm new to substitute teaching, and it's fair to say the rooms can be chaotic. One child even mentioned it. She was about 10 and said, "It's chaos. You should never do this again." She was right. Some children, the worst behaved, asked if they could help me control the class the next day. That said, in the case of this experienced teacher, a kid was on his phone during a movie that didn't matter. As long as he was wearing headphones, I'd let it slide.

      Sarah, Thanks for watching the video. And thanks for your response. I started this journey as a sub before earning the position I’ve held for the past 27 years. My wife has been subbing for various classes for several years. Both of us believe you can usually tell a lot about the teacher & classroom culture by the way students act when they have a sub. IMO, this is usually true, but not always. What’s really interesting is watching how some students act up in one class but not another. It comes down to the culture and classroom management of the teacher. I agree, as a sub, you have to pick your battles. And this isn’t a battle a sub should probably engage in. However, a full time teacher needs to. Because as soon as one person establishes this as a norm, other students start doing it as well. And if you let one slide and not everyone else, students view you as being unfair and/or playing favorites. Clearly I made one mistake on the video. I must not have clarified that this was a Crocodile Hunter video featuring Steve Irwin & I teach Ecology. So, the video covered several of the state teaching standards including food chains, predator/prey relationships, flora & fauna of Australia and other standards as well. I don’t believe in showing videos that don’t cover state standards. Class time is too valuable. Thank you for being a sub. It’s a difficult thankless job, but very important. Have a great school year. And keep being awesome. On a side note. I love the idea of getting the worst behaved students to help with discipline. Sometimes if you give them a job, you can get them to be productive helpers. Nice job :)

      @@colestersclassroom-teachin105 Oh really, that's interesting. Maybe I'll try it. You are right about giving an inch and the kids taking a mile. The other day, I was using a cute notepaper the teacher had to write down where I left off in class, which child was misbehaving (only to be told the child was autistic, so not sure how to know what that means when he pulls a chair from under a kid, who then has to go to the nurse). Then I let one child use a piece of notepaper. Then a bunch of kids came and took the cute paper. And as they left class, one girl was hurridly pulling pieces out, so I left the teacher a much smaller notepad than she had. I wanted to write an apology but didn't have the time. There's so much to learn. It is chaos much of the time so far.

      @@sarahcohen3844 So sorry to hear that. Hang in there. I don’t know your situation, but if you can select which teachers you sub for, that might help. @@colestersclassroom-teachin105 No, I sub with apps: Swing Education and next week, moving to Kokua. I see which school needs someone for a day or a few months (I'm too awful a sub for anyone to want me for more than a few days so far.) I've been part-time but may make sense to see what happens full-time if possible. These apps will kick me off as necessary, I guess. I can't say I'm good at this. Just that I try. I'm a reporter, but came across hard times. All I can say is, teaching is really hard. It's known they deserve far more pay than they get.

    13 years teaching high school here, and still going. I recognize the philosophy behind all of these steps, but at some point students with persistent behavior problems are just taking away time from other students. A class period is literally zero sum: we have 55 minutes of instructional time (or however much your school schedules), and that misbhevaed student is literally taking it from the others. I think at some point we are bending over backwards for kids who frankly don't deserve it. If after 2-3 interventions, a kid is not going to decide to improve his behavior, he can sit in the office and I can spend time helping the kids with Sped accommodations or the poor kid who is trying his hardest just to earn a "D" in his classes.

      @@colestersclassroom-teachin105 I was considered a "problem child" because of boredom and consequent rebelliousness. This period existed from first through twelfth grades. Constant, protracted battles with my parents and teachers and administrators. Half the school year out sick. Going away to college changed everything and I graduated Summa Cum Laude four years later. (I still have "problems" with rebelliousness which stem from the fact that many people--teachers and employers--give commands without explaining the reasoning behind them. The "pedagogy"--such as it is, remains most places in Nineteenth Century mode. I ain't doin' it.) I teach college English and am a successful fiction writer. My students love me.
