Dangerously rusted 2009 R56 mini rear subframe replaced, fuel tank was just hanging on- check yours!
Welcome back to the channel, today with the help of Chester the cat I'm changing the very rusty and dangerous rear subframe on our 2009 R56 mini cooper
The subframe rust had been advised on the previous MOT test but it was far worse than we thought and really shouldn't have been on the road, the fuel tank mounting straps bolt onto the subframe in two places, one had completely detached, the other wasn't far behind and wouldn't have lasted much longer (a bad road with a few pot holes could have been disastrous)
I had a few issues along the way including stuck brake pipes and antiroll bar drop links as well as the wrong number of bolts supplied by the main dealer but we got there in the end a...

Can I swap out the rusted rear axle on my 2012 Ford Ranger for one from a much newer 2020 model
Просмотров 2712 месяца назад
Like the rest of the pickup the rear axle had some fairly major rust issues which were getting worse, with the latest MOT test imminent its time to get it sorted The Backing plates for the rear drum brakes were very rusty and quite difficult change, that coupled with the fact that the pick up has done 150k miles and there was a fair bit of slack in the drivetrain it made more sense to try and g...

    Given the excellent cutting and welding done to repair the chassis, can you advise where in the area behind the rear spring mount you would drill into the chassis for a large electrical ground (53mm2 cable using a lug for either an 8mm or 10mm bolt ? What would you suggest as a corrosion prevention strategy after drilling into the chassis ?

    • @paulsprojects1
      @paulsprojects1 Месяц назад

      difficult to answer for drilling as there is internal bracing in the chassis too which had disintegrated in mine, you'd probably be better off getting 'weld on m8/m10 studs' properly fixed to the chassis and then cavity wax inside after welding

    Great video. It must be built in tradition that the subframes rot in these BMW Minis. They have virtually no protection on the chassis parts from new. I have a R56 MCS 2008 and subframes are pretty good. I've previously sprayed it underneath with the Waxoyl underseal spray but Bilt Hamber products are far superior.

    All manufacturers are playing the built-in obsolescence game: VW use steel rust-proof brake pipes and galvanised body shells - but cheap mild steel subframes which rot. Mercedes: stainless steel exhausts, alloy front subframe but cheap steel rear subframes that also rot. I guess EV manufacturers are doing the same.

    The foam will be an expensive waste of time and money. Whilst the corrugated iron will create condensation, the amount of foam will not raise the surface temperature above the dew point and thus condensation will still form although maybe not as visible due to the texture of the foam. One issue will be that the corrugated sheeting has not been foamed over the top of the purlins but the foam has partially cut off the passage of air over the top of the purlin so that any condensation is trapped and will drip on top of the timber that over time will rot, that air flow was vital to keep the timber dry. By far the best way to prevent condensation is to treat the roof as an industrial one with another skin of sheeting over the first and insulation between. This is why the standard liner panel on such a roof is only 0.9mm thick. Standard industrial roofing materials can be bought cheaply since there are many times when roof sheets are cut from the roll in error thus making them surplus.

    • @paulsprojects1
      @paulsprojects1 3 месяца назад

      I appreciate the comment, would love to have fitted insulated panels but they're certainly not cheap and the box profile wouldn't have been in keeping with the rest of the corrugated barn would I be better off filling the gap above the purlins with foam?

      @@paulsprojects1 You don't understand what a standard industrial roof is. It is formed using a thin liner sheet with a 19mm profile fixed to the purlins, there are then galvanised horizontal spacer Z bars fixed through the liner sheet into purlins, fibreglass insulation is laid over the liner sheet between the Z bars. and then the top finish sheet is fixed to the Z bars. That top sheet can be standard corrugated tin if you want to match your main roof. The height of the Z bars can be set to suit the depth of the insulation from 50 - 250mm. You don't have to comply with the insulation requirements of the Building Regs, being an agricultural barn so that the insulation can be set to suit that required for condensation control. This form of construction has been the most common used in industrial buildings for at least 50 years. What you are thinking of is the complete foam insulated bonded panel that is a totally different and more expensive animal. Apart from the condensation control aspect, another issue will be noise. In pouring rain the noise on the flat corrugated roof will be excessive and at times deafening. It isn't an issue with a barrel vault because that rain mostly strikes any part of the roof obliquely. Filling the gap over the top pf the purlins is problematic as the spray foam needs to be at least closed cell foam. The common open cell foam is vapour permeable and will allow the passage of vapour and condensation. Also the corrugated iron is in direct contact with the purlin and therefore has no insulation at that point and the foam will just hold the water produced.

      @@clivewilliams3661 cheers for that, yeah I'm no builder/ roofer that's for sure, noise isn't really an issue as its for storage only tbh but thanks for the info

    This come back and bite you in the arse just come across this and can't believe you just didn't get the correct parts penny pinching never pays off unless you needed to use the car.

      its not really penny pinching, the correct parts were refitted and the incorrect ones weren't as the quality obviously wasn't good enough, this is not an every day car that gets serviced every 10-20k, the pump that came off was in very good order as the car does very little mileage unfortunately, it'll get changed again in due course and I'll be better prepared next time as I now know the issues, hopefully the video has helped others be more aware too
