Short Time Lapse of a Watercolour Landscape
Here's a very short time lapse of my first watercolour painting in 35 years - a Madagascan village photographed back in 2019 when we could travel...
I hand frames each stage using my iPhone which explains why some of the frames are slightly distorted.

Here's a quick description of how I made a shelf for my easel using a strip of veneered plywood and an old pan-and-tilt tripod head that had been in the cupboard for years...
DIY Artist's Easel

Here's a video describing how I made my home artist's easel using Tasmanian Oak and a few stainless steel bolts. Look out for the follow up video on how I made a shelf for all the pain and brushes using timber off-cuts and an old tripod head.
DIY Small Display Cabinet

I finally found a home for a bunch of little clay souvenirs bought on a trip to Ethiopia. Using nothing but leftover bits of timber: an old office drawer, some picture frame glass and pieces of plywood, I made a small display cabinet...

DIY Garden Cold Frame
Просмотров 663 года назад
My latest project is to create a cold frame for hardening off seedlings before planting them out in the garden. I use a combination of dressed line left over from another job and some scrounged bits and pieces - including an aluminium window for the lid, to make it all work.
DIY Window Box Planters

Here's a video on how I made three large window boxes/planters - designed to sit with the absolute minimum contact with the wall they were designed sit on so as to try to preserve the timber from staying wet (and therefore rotting prematurely).
Tales from the Wood Library: Knife Block
Просмотров 124 года назад
Although I have a full knife block, my go-to knife in the kitchen doesn't fit in it! It sits on the kitchen bench top, which is not the safest way to store a knife of this type - so I thought of extending the current knife block to accommodate this tool. It was a relatively simple operation using two chunks of recycled pine to widen the existing block to accommodate the new knife. Like all my h...
Tales from the Wood Library: $10 Fixed (Disk) Sander
Просмотров 324 года назад
Here's a short video showing how to give an old $10 impact drill a new life as a sander in a fixed location - in this example, it was built into an existing trolley that was designed to hold a planer/thicknesser. Like all my home carpentry projects, this is a budget-conscious project that uses nothing recycled scrap wood (when I can get it) , glue and a few screws.

This is great. I mocked up a design earlier today but using bar neodymium magnets... and lo and behold you've done the exact same design! Thanks as I was puzzling over a few things like mounting the magnets in the routed holes!

Great video, I have a question. I wondered why you didn’t consider drilling holes deep enough with a foster bit glue magnets in and put an accenting plug to cover them something like walnut? I’m not sure it would have worked but just a thought. I really enjoyed the video, and being a retired chef I appreciate great knives.

This is one of the best videos i'v seen on how to do rack like this one, thank you. Just wondering how much wood did you have left between your magnet and a knife and what grade magnets did you use? Also why did you use different kind/size of magnets on the sides compared to the middle of the board.

Good questions - I left the thinnest amount of wood I felt safe doing. If it breaks thru you have to start over with new timber - so 4mm. Could have gone thinner but did not want the risk. I also used two sizes as I realised I needed more 'power' - rather than buying more, I used some I had bought previously, no other reason. 20, 12x6mm neodymium magnets - AUS$50. I could have done with 30 but it is a fine line between being strong enough to hold a knife and being too strong so you have to use one hand to hold the unit steady while pulling the knife with the other hand...
