Exit the Game Advent Calendar 2024 Day 8: The Missing Hollywood Star
There’s a subreddit called “Mildly Infuriating.” That’s how I feel about the meaningless “smiling face” part of the clue. 🤨
Yes… had spotted both hat and screws ages ago, so there really was nothing to this one… except nice idea, still!
The first thing you were to look for was the hat. I was sitting there saying The Hat! It’s literally millimetres from his head! and you completely ignored it. Lol! It’s interesting how people don’t see things, or fixate on other parts of the puzzle, while others see it completely differently. Shows how our minds work very differently from each other.
Yes, and I didn’t even realise that on rewatching it either. I didn’t know the tin man has a funnel on his head in The Wizard of Oz (I just looked it up and I see he does!) so it didn’t mean anything to me when I read it. Seemed so unlikely I ignored it.
lol, first time I screamed at you (well, at the screen), you literally had the tin man right next to his hat and wondering where the strips should be placed!!! The hat IS absolutely necessary: the screws give you the strips' relative positions (towards each other), but the funnel hat places the right numbers in the window - otherwise you could get a lot of different 3-number combos (like the first one you tried). The "smiley face" is just to make the rhyme, I think. You have the verbs telling you what to do: Find the hat and the screws, look next to the tin man. All that said, I had completely forgotten about the screws, and my first thought was to look over the calendar for the hat. I think that's why they had this riddle so late in the calendar - because by this point, we would become a bit blind to the screws after seeing them every day, even though they were the first thing to notice when first glancing on the decoder strips on day 1. The funnel hat on the other hand, I only now noticed, when looking at the screws intently for the first time. Cute puzzle though, I liked it! And getting pretty excited to see what kind of wackiness awaits us for the last day!!!
Haha - shame I couldn’t hear you! :) Although I did rather enjoy the moment of discovering the hat - and the slit beneath it that I hadn’t spotted previously! :)
Yes! Just currently watching it, and was getting frustrated because the hat was Right There next to his head! Lol!
Haha first time I noticed that you write spoilers at the beginning, I hope that's not a surprise for people that tune in to watch someone solve a christmas adventcalender 😂😂 This calendar haven't had many puzzles this year where you need to look around the "front" picture and gather info i would say, taken into account that today's type of puzzle have been used quite a few times now 🤔
Yes, it’s a curious ordering of the puzzles. But out of interest what’s the spoiler? I watched the start and can’t see it, so what am I missing? Maybe I can do something about it.
@@drgarethI think it’s more a reference to the ‘warning:spoilers’ text that pops up in the top left of the videos
@@philpottmatt Ya, and that warning is in all his videos afaik. I don't understand how someone could think they could watch a puzzle solve and not have it contain spoilers, and yet that category of people definitely exists.
I liked this one, it was fun.
I found the funnel and split when I was trying to figure out the time machine so I was happy to finally use it. It was the one clue that was still open for me, I wonder if I missed something that will come up in the last two days.
I see what you mean! It will be interesting to find out. :)
Read 'screws', remembered where the screws were, instantly forgot the first half of the sentence about finding the tin hat.
Haha, so true! I didn’t understand what it meant so it didn’t register with me at all.
Wow. It's amazing how much you can miss while looking at things. Didn't even see the funnel until it was pointed out
I’m glad it wasn’t just me! :)
That's an at-the-dentist smile if ever I've seen one...I hadn't spotted the funnel hat either, that's brilliant! Strange error at the beginning, book not found... 🤔😆
That’s true on both counts! :)
You ignored the instructions to first find the Tin Man's funnel hat, and instead looked for only all screws.
I didn’t even realise that on re-watching, but clearly that’s true! I only paid attention to the missing apostrophe on that part of the sentence - oops. Still, I actually think I prefer the puzzle without knowing to look for it since you don’t need that clue, clearly. :)
@drgareth It's because of that Tin Hat that you were able to solve later, because, it was only with that Tin Hat that you were able to get the smile. And you weren't sure what the smile even meant during your solve. As far as I can tell, his mouth doesn't change because of an angle and position.
I still can’t see the smile! How does the hat make him smile? I assumed that was just whimsy.
Don't know that it does, but that was the argument you had in the recording as to why he goes there. The reason he goes there is precisely because it is the Tin Man's Tin Hat. Otherwise he could be located with the screws practically anywhere. The clue of his Tin Hat was supposed to be a requirement for placing him correctly, as the screws alone would not be enough.
This puzzle went well for us. The only tough part was the inevitable "is the thumb a finger" debate. 😆
I’m glad it wasn’t just me! :)
The story always sounds so much more fun when you read it! We tend to rush a bit through the reading in our hurry to get to the puzzle, hee hee. Today's puzzle had so many steps! We found the word but missed the numbers. Well done you and well played game designers!
Oh that’s really kind of you! :) Ironically, when I play on my own I also nearly always gloss over stories. I want to get to the puzzles! :)
So glad you are doing the Exit Advent calendar again this year! We are way behind with ours, so I'm just catching up with the first days now. Hoping it's a good one this year!
Hiya! Yay! Welcome back and I hope you enjoy the videos - and most importantly the calendar! I won’t comment in any real way so as not to spoil you, but it’s good!
Of the videos of Exit games played through this is my favourite game so far - the design is colourful and the puzzles in general are solid...though that sunglasses on the underground puzzle was a misfire in my opinion - I initially thought youd have to fold the map to reveal a sunglasses shape because theres a loop that looks like a glass lens. Thanks for the upload
It’s a fun game, isn’t it? And my pleasure - thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the birthday present Exit the game!
If it’s your birthday today, happy birthday! :)
@ yes 12/21 is my birthday. My mom and I are solving this very calendar, we’re having so much fun with it. We watch your videos after trying to solve it ourselves Oh yeah if you look on the door of day 10 you’ll see the tail of the cat
This was clever, with the three holes in the wall of the hidden room. And the way it looked when solved was cool. But as a puzzle I did not think much if it… again so very clear instructions, almost like reading a clue from the Help Book…
Is it just me or have the later days been notably easier than the earlier ones? :) Less mystery over what to do, at least.
@ Yes! I feel the same! Almost no puzzling, just going through the motions… Let’s hope it picks up a little for the last ones!
Thanks for doing these - I've struggled with every light puzzle so far (even after reading the solution) and gave up on all 3, so it's nice to see what it actually looks like and how it works!
My pleasure! I think it's a lot easier using a camera because you don't have to deal with so many elements all at once - including staring through a small hole! :)
I liked this one, the issue I had was I followed the directions and put 21 on my door then spent 10 minutes trying to work out why I had 4 days left and only 3 doors, eventually realised it should be 22🤭.That ended up being a harder puzzle😂.
Haha - I'm scared every day of writing the wrong number, since I'm using permanent marker and there will be no hiding it away and pretending I didn't! :)
Noooooo😂
My thoughts too!!! :)
Oooooops
I think it was genuinely ambiguous - a shame both those two doors were still available!
That card maze thing was clever.
Yes - I completely agree. It's surprising how so few cards work together to make something surprisingly complex!
Shows that the designer didn't get someone to test the puzzle. There was absolutely 2 ways to interpret that position (and both doors were unopened)
I would have flipped it over like they did at first then they talked themselves out of it. Could have had a clearer clue though
Yes, my instinct was to open the left door, but then when I thought more about the clue I decided the other one actually made more sense.
This was a fun one and quite clever!
I really enjoyed it too!
I loved that one! I think I'm loving the more... tactile(?) puzzles more!
I particularly like the ones that couldn't exist without the physical calendar, so take full advantage of its form factor.
The mask in the ball is named Wilson from the Tom Hanks movie ...cast away
Ahhhh - another one I've never seen! Thank you! :)
I'm not sure about the horse or the tiki mask, but the coconuts and the hat are presumably Monty Python and Harry Potter references... Not sure why Last Christmas is their go-to Christmas song though! Was the calendar with the Yeti heavy on Wham songs? I don't recall...
The “tiki mask” is from Cast Away (Tom Hanks) - he named the volleyball after its brand name, Wilson. The “creepy” mask from the bottom left wall (under the clapperboard) is from V for Vendetta. The rocking horse might be from The Rocking-Horse Winner, but I’m not sure about that.
Oh, yeah, I think you are right! There was a part in the story where you were trying to turn off a boombox or something - and I believe it was playing Last Christmas!
Ah, thank you! I knew the V for Vendetta one since I've seen that, but I didn't get the other references at all.
These seem to be getting earlier and earlier. I know it's *technically* the 21st now in the UK.
Fun fact, these videos are recorded a day or two ahead of the time, you can see there are extra videos in the playlist that are hidden.
Only days 21, 22 and 23 have been recorded ahead of time, because I'm away this weekend. Every other Exit video without any exception has been recorded some time around midnight at the start of the day UK time, and published as soon as I have finished editing it - typically around 1am or 2am. So that's why day 21 was an hour or two earlier, since I scheduled it for exactly midnight. (But that's interesting about the playlist - I wondered whether they showed up as hidden or not if scheduled. Clearly they do!)
To answer your question about the feathers, no, they're not super significant, and I'm pretty sure they're open to interpretation. Basically, there are only two feathers, one at the beginning being blown to Forrest's feet, which I think symbolizes that there was a long journey for him to get to the bench at the beginning, and one at the end, blowing away, to indicate his son is about to start his own unpredictable journey into life.
Ah, how interesting! Thank you for explaining - and for watching! :)
We had a hard time with this one and eventually looked at the solution. We had arranged the disks correctly and could sort of see two dancers. We wen't sure which ones they were and didn't spend enough time trying to figure it out. We felt that it would only give two numbers so we thought we must have it wrong!
Yes, I was expecting to find three dancers too. It was only because I was so confused by the incongruity of the '10' that I twigged what was going on! :)
The O in the compass was surely to spell SNOW in line with the Christmas theme of the game- yes im watching this 2 years afterwards
I love that idea but sadly I think it really is just a translation oversight. And the calendar was on sale again this year so there’ve been plenty of people watching this year again - thank you for commenting!
The "take" in "Take 26A" is a noun, not a verb. Chances are it was unambiguous in German but became an accidental red herring when translated to English.
You're probably right. It's a shame the text above tells you to treat the clipboard as a coded message - without that it would be easier to ignore.
Hi, Gareth was just wondering if you have many more upcoming plans for yourself or with laura, bringing out new physical content like books or maybe something different? Keep up the great work with vids, going to miss daily uplaods 😢
Hiya! Yes, we have written over a dozen books together in 2024, some of which - such as The Official Cluedo Book of Puzzles - won't be released until 2025. We've also just completed Book 2 in The Murder Mystery Puzzle Club series, The Perfect Plot, which will be out in I think May 2024. We'll also continue to release weekly (or as weekly as we can manage) videos that are full solves of puzzle boxes, so will average an hour or so in length - to add to the more than 50 we've already done of this type. We recorded a couple just a few days ago so there are some already planned for January. Thanks for commenting, and for watching! :)
The red line for alignment is also intended to show which direction you're supposed to read the message from (with the glasses right side up), but it's rather obvious from the text's orientation if the holes were fitted correctly.
Yep, another simple but fun puzzle..
Agreed, but it's easy to go wrong - to start with I assumed the trail led TO the door of that day which confused me for a bit. The bit about going 'back' confused me.
Definitely a case of a very simple puzzle leading to overthinking.
The problem I have is that a pair of directions is not a set of movement instructions. If it said N1 or somehow communicated the idea that it was a step, it would have been clearer.
The clue also mentions "globe", and the correct door is labelled with big writing that says "globe" (part of the title of the calendar). That might have just been a coincidence though...
Oooooh that's interesting. However it's just the top part of some of the letters so I agree it's probably coincidence.
On the door of room 10 you could also see the tail of the cat
Oh, I COMPLETELY missed that! Ha - well that settles my last confusion, which was that without the cat being present the timeline on this was a bit arbitrary.
I know there is some phenomenon about how our brains work when it comes to puzzle solving (though I can't remember its name) whereby we make a guess that something might be relevant, but then something happens where we convince ourself that our wild guess MUST be right, forgetting it that it was only speculation with no real reasoning behind it to begin with. Your dedication to those film reels was a masterclass exemplifying that phenomenon today. :-P I watched today because I was really hoping you'd explain for us what was the relevance of any of the words on that clipboard. I'm almost… relieved?… to see that you have no idea what the 26A was all about either. But my wife and I never even saw that watermelon - we've never turned the two books over because it feels like that's something we should only do if instructed to do so. Fortunately the pattern of the two dancers was legible even without the watermelon background. :-)
Thank you so much for your comment! You're absolutely spot-on on your first comment - and I have noticed I do this quite often! On SO many videos I either say something must be wrong but pursue it anyway; OR I have the right answer from the start but then move away from it. It's quite interesting to watch myself back! :) And on the dancer pattern, I suspected I could have solved it without the watermelon too (and indeed did identify the '10' dancer) so it's good to have confirmation!
I did everything right, but just didn't get the right angle to see something. Even figured out quickly that I needed the mirrored side. I was very annoyed when I used both hints but they didn't tell me anything I wasn't doing yet. I got there in the end but was surprised that you saw it straight away.
I think that probably it's a lot easier using my camera than it is when you have to coordinate holding the calendar, a light source and the mirror all at once - plus I don't have to then get right next to the large calendar to see it! :) That's annoying about the hints, though - but I guess at least they confirmed you were doing the right thing!
I thought the same thing too, 'let's hope I'm doing the right thing, otherwise I ruined it'. The English translation was much clearer than the Dutch one this time. The word 'overlap' shows you wat to look for immediately. Mine translates to 'look for commonalities' which is a bit harder to interpret. For a second I thought I had to be looking for same parts of fish in the overlapping parts. Happy to say I only wasted a few seconds on that before I realised the real answer was much easier.
I'm fascinated by the differences in translation. I suppose it's completely inevitable, and I don't envy the translators their work! :) Interesting though that even with a more subtle translation for this clue that it still was straightforward to solve.
This one was another example of how translation affects more than just the language but the whole design of the box. The Dutch translation has two more letters than the English ones, which means it needs more doors. At first I was confused why I didn't need all of them, but that would mean translating in every language would be impossible. I really respect all the translators of this thing! Even though the Dutch translation made a big error in today's story because they referred to Forrest as 'she' and 'her' and also states 'as if they were waiting for the bus'. I think the translator forgot about what's shown in the room and pictured the real scene in the movie instead with the woman sitting next to Forrest
How fascinating - I didn't think at all about translation issues with these letters. I wonder how many the original German edition used! To start with I was confused by the extra doors, but then decided they were deliberate distractors - but perhaps they were leftovers from the original version in fact. That's funny about Forrest though! :)
Such a nice shelf of books and games behind you! But you thought you made today's puzzle unnecessary complicated, but I did the same, and even more so! I was thrown by the THREE words, and THREE rows of chocolates. Further they had placed exactly 1 blue on the top row, 1 nutty one on the middle row, and 1 heart on the bottom row. So I spent several minutes trying to assign values to those three chocolates. Only then did I think of just counting them! But OK puzzle!
Those Crime Scene games look particularly interesting! :) And thanks so much for sending them (and in the process providing proof that these videos are recorded just-in-time for each calendar day! :) But yes, I didn't think of counting to start with either - I definitely thought I was looking to select three separate chocolates and then assign values to them somehow.
This is completely irrelevant, but i think the pudding hat is the best of Laura's festive accoutrements!
Haha - it's fun isn't it! I will have to try to find my Santa hat for the last day of the other calendar! :)
Today reminds me of the Team Rocket HQ puzzle from Pokémon Red/Blue Gameboy game. You have to navigate the map by stepping on floor plates with arrows and they send you spinning in said direction until you reach another one, which sends you on to the next one, e.g. ⏬ ⏩.>>.⏬ V ^ v ⏩.>.⏫ exit 🚪 Probably just my brain that goes there, but it was a nice moment of nostalgia while watching the solve ! ☺️
Maybe it's because I'm American, but I enjoy the American cover of that book way more. I find it a lot more visually interesting.
It looks a lot better in the graphic than it does in reality, where the colours are much more dull. But my problem with it is that it in absolutely no way tells you what's inside the book. It is supposed to make clear that it is a version of Wordle you can play yourself without needing to be online or use a screen - and yet it utterly fails to do so. In fact it doesn't contain ANY graphics that identify it even as a puzzle book. BUT what I didn't say is that I also don't like the UK cover very much, although at least you can sort of infer what's going on. It should have used bright colours to match the Wordle grids, which are not original to Wordle anyway. In fact, Wordle uses the EXACT appearance and game design of the 35-year old TV Show 'Lingo', right down to the precise colours (in the UK version, at least - in the US version of Lingo, one colour differs from Wordle). The only difference is that in Lingo the first letter is given. At the time Wordle was also not trademarked, AND it shared its name with at least two other already-existing word puzzles. Two weeks after my book was published, another UK publisher printed a book called "Wordle Challenge" with an unambiguous cover and title and went on to sell vast, vast numbers. (I have no idea if that other book was printed in the US or not)
We solved it straight away BUT we couldn't see which dancer it was because the blobs were a bit rubbish, we thought they were 3 and 6 and were confused over the last digit! Had to check the hint to see which it actually was
I wasn't sure how accurately I had assembled them so did wonder if it would have been clearer if I'd done it more accurately - but it sounds like the answer is no! :)
It stuck to my mind when you presented the backs of the booklets. All those different movie quotes that wrong in one way or another. Good thing that I have seen Dirty Dancing and know that Baby brings a watermelon to the party, not only half with bits missing. The room was very much a reference to the film with the very iconic lift, and the seed maps could only belong to the illustration. One puzzle where prior knowledge of the film came in handy.
Interesting! Well, I'm glad to have the excuse although I should have remembered to check the booklets too I suppose - I did earlier in the month, but clearly by now familiarity (or not!) had let me to be complacent! :)
@drgareth You got to the right answer without consulting the hint book, that is what counts. And it is interesting to see how you approach each puzzle, it's fun to see if my first impulse is completely wrong. I'm new to these escape room puzzles with an overarching narrative and had to look up the hints for my murder mystery light novel yesterday. 😅
I got the watermelon reference (the half confused me) but somehow still thought the dots in the circle were footprints of dancing steps. Still figured out what to do with them very quickly though, without help from the booklet. Only problem was that I had them mirrored so couldn't match them at first. Maybe I shouldn't do these first thing after waking up because it was clearly not my brightest moment
This one completely lost me and I gave in and looked at the solution. I'd been so good for so many of the puzzles but this one just annoyed me 😂
I would be very interested to know if the other identically sized circles are pure coincidence, or deliberate red herrings!
Another one I had to look up the answer for. I thought each circle would be an individual number. Even after finding out you’re meant to stack them, I couldn’t do it. I just ended up with big blobby messes. And “Take 26A” is 100% movie related flavour text. As in, say, “Batman Returns, scene 17, take 14! Action!” The take being alphanumeric is a little odd, though.
Yes, I've never heard of an alphanumeric take number, although I can't claim to be an expert. But even without the letter, I think it would be too misleading to include when you also say that the clipboard contains a hidden message. And I also thought each circle was a separate number too (until I didn't!) - it's a bit mean to give you 3 circles! :)
