The Vintage Gardener- NJ
Добавлен 5 ноя 2013
Hi! My name is Brooke, and I live in Burlington County New Jersey, zone 7a. My dream is to one day be able to sell specialty flowers-the kind that you don't find in big box stores or independent garden centers. But before I do that I need to do extensive flower trials to determine what plants I will be offering.
I'm starting all of these plants from seed and then trialing them in the historic style gardens that I am installing at my home-Wyldefell Manor. On my channel, in addition to plant trials, I will be teaching you how to start and grow plants from seed, design a garden, and how to care for your plants. In addition to this channel I have a podcast (The Vintage Gardener Podcast) where I go over all the science behind gardening and occasionally do live call in shows.
Please join me on my journey.

@@urbanbackyardcontainergardenin thanks!
Brooke, I loved the May tour! Your spring perennials did so well. I watched it early Saturday morning in October (26th) and it made me so excited for spring 2025. Thank you for sharing and please continue to share with us what happened in your garden for 2024. Thanks again!
@@CatherinesGardenHomeLWS plenty more videos to come.
That was interesting
Aaarggh! I wish I was there. I won't be back to visit until Monday. Was this at Smithville?
I definitely would've bought some things from you. Congratulations!🎉💜
@@lorrainet5324 oh this was back in April. It was at the Burlington County Agricultural Center.
@@TheVintageGardenerNJ Nice!!!
I really enjoy all the behind the scenes information like the cash register and tent even though I will likely never sell at a farmers market.
@@lindaalpertesq ya never know. At least if you change your mind you’ll know what to expect.
💚💚💚
Hi Brooke! I love your hat and Easter outfit. I love the planters filled with bulbs. Thanks for the tour.
@@CatherinesGardenHomeLWS thanks for commenting. Logan square is always so pretty for Easter.
Wow, I have to get out more! What an incredibly beautiful place! I thank you very much for the tour and especially for stating the variety names! 💕🎉
@@happymack6605 Longwood is definitely a bucket list item. The Christmas display is always phenomenal.
Hello Brooke! Nice to see you in the replay.
@@life-changingbooksprayerfo4344 hi! I know! I’ve done a horrible job with videos this year.
Hey❤❤❤
@@patriciaterry5539 hi!!,
never knew all this info! Would love to seethe cleanup process of your garden.
Love the pink pots they’ll really stand out. Great signature color.
@@roslynholcomb I converted my logo to white and am having clear labels with the white logo printed. I think the white will really pop on the pink.
I wanted to ask if there are new markets you intend to try? Will you be scouting them this fall or are you pretty much set with your preferences? I think the classes for newbies is a great idea. People are intimidated by gardening and it’s a considerable investment. H What you said about sunflowers is interesting. I had no idea people loved them so much. People freak over my garden twice a year. They love the peonies which makes sense. But my sunflower fence gets more comments and the funkier they are the better they like them. I find myself looking specifically for interesting seeds just to get the comments.
@@roslynholcomb yes. There are a couple of markets I have in mind. One I visited. I’m going to visit a couple of more this fall.
I love the pink pots! Did you say where they are from? Can you sign up at a farmers market just for the spring?
@@lindaalpertesq I ordered the pink pots from a greenhouse supplier. Most markets give you the option to decided what Saturdays you’d like to participate.
@TheVintageGardenerNJ thank you. I grow seedlings for charity once a year for my county's master gardener plant sale. If you feel comfortable sharing the name of the garden supply store I would be grateful, if not I understand.
Oh I think you are not buying blank pots. Sorry I misunderstood. You are having them customized
@@lindaalpertesq yes they were customized pots. Typically you have to order 10,000 or 8 pallets depending upon the company.
@@TheVintageGardenerNJ wishing you great success!
Hey Brooke💚. The concept of farmers markets is interesting . Enjoyed the video immensely. Thank you for sharing 🧡
@@urbanbackyardcontainergardenin No problem. I always knew that a lot went on behind the scenes of a farmers market but I had no idea how much.
I appreciate your gardening insights! This is very useful info and great ideas. I need to visit more farmers markets 😂 Thanks for sharing!
@@GmamaGrowz have fun at the markets!
Oh my goodness! Thank you sister Brooke❤🫂🙂. This is helpful and good information. God bless you and keep up the good work.
@@francesca8284 I’m glad you found it useful. There is so much to know and I’ll never understand why this aspect of farmers markets is rarely discussed.
Wow That’s interesting. Distance is an issue. I’m near you but not near enough to drive up there.
@@inesterway9982 I’m sure there a few markets near you.
I understand Brooke! Catch your breath! Great information!
👍🏿👍🏿 Brooke!
Amazing! What does it look like now?
@@melanieb8746 as I did more research I determined the the tree wasn’t big enough to start the shaping process. I have enough growth now to begin.
I enjoyed this behind the scenes information. Thank you for sharing it.
@@lindaalpertesq it’s not something anyone really talks about, but it’s something people should talk about.
This is an interesting topic. I’ve wondered how things were going with 3P. As for seasonality I have alerts in my phone because my favorite local nursery opens the last week of March and closes the last week of June. They re-open in late August. I’ve always thought it was odd but it makes perfect sense. They could probably sell plants in July but it probably wouldn’t be enough to justify the expense of being open. I would imagine finally being able to start your business is very exciting but burnout is a real issue.
@@roslynholcomb I’m so exhausted 😩.
For your tomato day, as you were talking I imagined a booth with "tomatoes love flowers too" type of setting lol
@@SoilandMargaritas I was thinking more offering tomato starts for people to grow indoors during the winter.
This is very interesting to me, we have a great farmers market where I live, its almost like a combo of all the "types" that you mentioned, we have plenty of homegrown, plenty of artsy, plenty of "antiques" and DIY items and the one I enjoy the most, fashion and accessories :)
@@SoilandMargaritas I didn’t realize how many different types of markets there were until I started applying.
Great video
@@MissT_NJ thanks! I hope it helps other potential vendors.
Gorgeous
I can't imagine the dedication it takes to get these plants going! Congratulations. Good luck with this endeavor. Love your videos.

I thought all poppies needed light to germinate.... Have you eone these varieties before? And did you cover them with a little bit of soil?
I covered them with vermiculite. That’s not soil. As far as the whole needs light thing- ambient light is fine.
Outstanding!❤❤❤
Wow! Awesome!

Hello from the Retired Gardener!
@@patriciaterry5539 hi!
I used to use ProMix bx for everything but since moving to SE PA I have been getting same size bale of Lambert all purpose for half the price at an Amish greenhouse. On 2nd year of using that and not seeing any difference from the pro mix honestly. Frees up money for more plants 😬 At work we use a zebra printer/ink for our price labels that go on everything outdoors. Not sure what cost is on it but as you scale up might be worth investing in that kind of printer. We print thousands of labels and it makes quick work of it and they last outside.
We don’t have lamberts or I would. I was using the wrong printer. The labels said it was for laser printers and I was using an ink jet. Don’t know how I missed that! I bought a clearance laser printer from Walmart and I haven’t had an issue since.
