That's honestly one of the most dominant tournaments that I've ever seen, especially given the quality of players that he faced

For characters with higher jumpsquats (5 or higher) is there any reason to wd down over just dropping shield?
Most of the "shield release" animations last for 15 frames. So if your character has 5 frames of jump squat or more, then letting go of shield can be better (since the amount of time your wavedash takes to finish is the amount of jump squat frames your character has plus 10)! However, wavedash down also has its place, since it automatically buffers ASDI down + tech in place, and it's also easier to switch up your DI in case you get hit. But simply letting go of shield is definitely viable for a lot of characters, it's just a timing that you have to get used to so that you don't end up losing time on it (people are usually already pretty good at timing their actions after a wavedash). For some 5+ frame jump squat characters, letting go of shield is really good (Link, Ganon, Zelda etc). Other 5+ frame jump squat characters, especially the high tiers, have their own reasons and techniques for not simply letting go of shield; Peach can double jump land OOS which is much faster than WD down or letting go of shield. Puff might want to WD down since her hurtbox becomes tiny while wavedashing. Falco will sometimes try to just do an instant sh laser OOS (because an instant laser comes out frame 18 and will hit tall characters) etc. So long story short: Dropping shield is also very good!
