Who's that woman playing trombone?
I think this is the "obscene military song" he said his uncle taught him (or at least one version of it) -- A soldier told me before he died, I don't know whether the bastard lied, No matter how hard he tried, His wife was never satisfied. So he fashioned a tool of ten "inch steel, Driven by a crank and a bloody great wheel, Two brass balls he filled with cream, And the whole fucking issue was driven by steam. 'Round and round went that bloody great wheel, In and out went that tool of steel, Till his wife with rapture cried "Enough, enough, I'm satisfied." But this was the case of the biter bit, There was no way of stopping it, Her cunt right to her arsehole split, And the whole fucking issue was covered with shit.
One of the great under-acknowledged lyricists of rock. No one could meld high-minded irony, absurdity, pathos, and romanticism quite like he could As great as Jack Bruce's solo albums were on their own terms, it's Pete Brown's lyrics that made them special. He's also the reason why "Theme For An Imaginary Western" is my favorite Mountain song (although to be fair, "Nantucket Sleighride" and "Tired Angels" come close!)
Martin breathes new life into what I otherwise find trite old Dylan songs. love this.
I have lived in the Philippines since April 2023,Watching this very interesting interview, brought back some great memories for me.I first went to TLR in early 2013 about six months after they started, and last went to TLR about the end of 2018 because of other commitments.I'm not professing that i became great friends with Ron and Hilary,But i would always have a little chat with them.and get to know them a little bit,I would of liked to spend more time with them talking about music as i could have learned more from them.TLR is a great venue and if you've never been i highly reccomend that you pay a visit there,i guarantee you'll have a great nights entertainment.
I recently had a Western Digital nvme drive fail after only 14 months. Back in the 90s while in the Air Force, we had lots of WD drives fail very early. Do you have a recommendation for the most reliable drives?
Great to hear some of her life and back story, yes, in 2024, really nice lady.
More than forty years ago I saw you at tv playing "Let it be me". Since then , my life have been accompanied allways with a guitar. Thank you, Martin.
PETE BROWN my HERO...without Peter Brown we would not be listening to such classic music %0 years later! He made a LOT of people BIG!
R.I.P. Pete - dear old friend
Do Leeds City Council understand JFK's musical impact he has impressed on the city after all these years, personally I think not? The Leeds Arena, IMO, could be named the JFK Leeds Arena, he deserves it.
I wish I were there as an interviewer talking about Sarah& Brian, Franky and Johnny.
I know Charlie has done a pile of stuff since - but "Listen" still does it for me.
If you get the chance to see Scott live its a great show.
What a blessing it was to experience the artistry of the likes of Davey Graham’, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and, of course Martin Simpson. I don’t see this dedication and application to perfecting an art today, everyone wants instant fame.
Soul and virtuosity.
Is that a g sus tuning? Great rendition, thank you for sharing.
Thanks man Got your ad while looking at porn
Guitar sounds great : )
Bought Ken Small's 'Forgotten Dead' when it came out. A fascinating and heartbreaking read...and inspirational as far as Ken Small's dogged determination to bring the DDtank ashore and the harrowing story to light. Martin's song absolutely nails the story factually and tastefully....and accompanied by his beautiful playing, doesn't get any better....Hope he plays it tmrw night !
Fascinating story
Just a question, was he using tonewood or was it totally unpluged?
totally unplugged
@@MusicfortheHeadandHeart Thank you man
Terrific promoter
Legend!
Martin Simpson Really is a superior player ✌🏼 Legend
I've watched this excellent interview before and i take it as a short plunge into a world where i can imagine a world where I would have the invigorating and substantial father figure of martin simpson in my life, anyways cheers and wonderful interview!
Jack Bruce was such a talent. Fabulous voice and best bass player. Glad he and Pete got together and created such magic.
I remember having "Best of Cream" on vinyl and literally wore it out I loved it so much, just brilliant music
PETE HAD TO BE DOING SOME OF ENGLANDS FINEST BACK IN THOSE DAYS WRITING STUFF FOR CREAM THE LYRICS WITH JACK BRUCES VOICE WAS GENIUS IT BLENDED IN WITH THE DESIRELI GEARS LP COVER . BACK THEN YOU WOULD THINK SOMEBODY WAS TOKING A LITTLE SOMETHING BACK IN THOSE DAYS!!!
SWLABR A RAINBOW WITH A BEARD LSD!!!!!!
I never saw anybody play drums like Ginger. He spent a few years in Ethiopia, I believe, and studied drums with some great African drummers, so when he played, he pounded the shit out them. He thundered like I've never heard another drummer do, in fact I think he was the first to use a double bass. But at one time Jack was doing heroin and then quit but Ginger continued for 20 years. How he survived so long like that is amazing. Eric was doing tons of cocaine eventually. But Pete is right, you can't play good music if you're high. A little bit high is OK, like a few beers or a few puffs, but anything else will ruin you musically. I've always admired the songwriting of Jack and that's why I wanted to learn about Pete because I knew he was one of Jack's co-writers. My favorite is "Deserted Cities of the Heart."
Pete Brown?
Ginger didn't "thunder" on drums. Yes, he hit them hard, but that's not the main thing, or even something anybody would particularly notice about his playing. That man had swing, as you would expect from a guy who trained with jazz drummers long before his days in Africa. He idolized Phil Seaman, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Baby Dodds, guys like that. That's how he really learned to play drums. And Phil Seaman was extremely interested in African drumming and rhythms, and introduced these to Baker. But that swing was deeply entrenched, and never left him. Listen, for example, to his drumming on "White Room." That's not "thundering," even though it is loud, and prominent. That's swing.
Amazing, thank you
Hats off to you, mate for posting this interview and filling out the rest of pete brown's story for me.
Pete is a legend and its a fascinating story
Still a lovely looking lady as well.
I agree!
A really fine guy ! ❤
Robb, grateful thanks for sharing this, much appreciated
What a blast this was... improv about vegetables 🌶... how could we make something about red peppers & courgettes sound so smoky?
