How to tell if your Viscous Fan Clutch is Bad - Sprinter Vans / Other Vehicles
Просмотров 71 тыс.3 года назад
this is a brief video to show a simple diagnostic test to see if you have a fan clutch that has failed to produce torque. this will apply to T1N sprinters as well as NCV3 equipped with a viscous fan clutch. this also applies to any vehicle with a viscous fan clutch. this is not a definitive test for something with an electric clutch.
Every Sprinter owner needs to know this! - proper engine temperatures for a T1N.

How to adjust/replace rear doors/hinges on a T1N Sprinter.
Просмотров 11 тыс.4 года назад
A brief video to show you various helpful tips on how to replace door hinges, replace doors, or adjust your rear doors on your T1N Sprinter. edit: DONT grease your hinges, lubricate them. Sorry brain fart. Kansas City Sprinter vans is a one-man shop located in Kansas City Missouri dedicated to working on T1N sprinters.
I installed a new clutch but the fan still runs even when the engine is cold. could you tell me the reason? thank you very much
Just came across this video while doing some research on the cooling system on my Mercedes M119 V8. In the process of changing the thermostat amongst a few other components. I learned a lot about the viscous fan and how it operates-great job with the video very informative and fun to watch, you have a great highly energetic and enthusiastic way of speaking that is leaps and bounds better than the majority of monotone speakers on here lol
Where's all the black crud around the injectors?
Very informative. Much appreciated.
Three years later, hah, a question: What's the common cause of the rear door not wanting to lock when locking other doors? I hear what I assume is the actuator doing a thunk-THUNK - one direction then back, I expect - and oftimes I have to go to the back and open a door, manually push the lock flap, shut the door to get it to lock properly. Other times, the rear door locks as it should, there's no consistency to it.
Where’s this 80$ fan clutch !?
Amen brother, im watching this because my fan clutch failed, on my 2012 sprinter 3500...and yes "don't cheap out or you will find out !"
note the speeds of the paper hitting the fans and that tells you something too. Reminds me of the sports cards on a bike!
Thank you broe
how do you test not running yet. Have not finished engine swap. so engine not running... fan not installed??
Super helpful, thanks dude!
Love the videos, keep them coming
If you have fan roar, could that mean you have a bad thermostat?
Is 230 F maximum for an 2005 Winnebago view RV 10.000lb hot ? Going up hill ? Or is just fine because of the weight ? After that it stays on 205 F
something is wrong if you're regularly reaching 230. It is the safe max, but it shouldn't get there.
It’s overheating on medium hills and freeway I tested today. It cools down on hidle. I did not let it go to 250 at all . Tomorrow I will do all my cooling system I appreciate your insight on you tube. Hopefully I will not need a new engine but if I do I will look for you. Question a sprinter 3500 loaded heavy like the RV 10k pounds , where I live is freaking hot and I only go to hot places on summer do you think I can by pass the thermostat? I will replace the whole cooling system . I usually do not drive on winter or go to cold places.
@@silasf94 You shouldn't need to bypass your thermostat even setup that heavy. Just replace most of the old cooling system, including radiator, and take it easy.
@@kansascitysprinters79 I have a 2008 sprinter 3500 RV loaded. I have already replaced the thermostat and changed the fluid. However, it is still hitting high temperatures of 248 and then the light comes on. I ease off, turn off the air and it goes back down. I did your test with a piece of paper when I pulled over, but the fan was working well and going full blast. The paper did not bother it or stop it. What else do you recommend? I am thinking to replace the fan clutch next as you recommend.
@@travisely9033 If your cooling system is good, and you've got temps at 248 uphill I'd suspect head gasket next.
thank you. I got an aftermarket clutch thinking it would help and I started getting fan roar. The original was probably fine
So what's the difference in an original T1N fan clutch and a new Mercedes brand fan clutch, just the age, is that what you're referring to when you say no matter what, the original T1N's are bad? thanks
Preventive maintenance at its finest. If we can understand how failing to do these things will damage our components, then we will be in a better position to act on this knowledge and keep our vehicles alive for longer, and healthier along the way.
Two of the telecom / ISP service companies we service replace both fuel filters every oil change, they typically run 7500-8000 miles, all 6.7 PSD Fords, in class 5 bucket trucks. We haven't had a fuel system issue with any, since 2016.
I'm thinking about updating my recommendation to every oil change. Bad fuel ruins good engines.
Top advice... Thanks from Scotland
My Mazda BT 50 fan clutch is over 17 years old. Still works well.
Well, this is a good start but often these fans don't lock up when they need to or as completely as they need to. This test does NOT guarantee the clutch is good. Sorry for the bad news. My research suggests you need to check the rpm of the fan when it's running over 200 degrees.
Quick explanation thanks.
Another question involving my hinge: I replaced the hinge but the new one is still actuating at the wrong part first. I have a ladder attached to the outside of that door. Could that be the problem? The top hinge works fine.
Hey! Question: I'm having issues with the black latch mechanism on the driver side door that controls that bar on the inside of the door. It started a few months back and has consistently been an issue. I have to fidget with it to get it to go into full locking mechanism whether the door is shut or open. Any thoughts?
and if you have a sprinter 2011? where is the temperature gauge?
I have a 96 Tacoma with 300,000 miles with viscous fan clutch and the fan is engaged/runs all the time, do I need a new clutch?
That is info for KIDS 😂😂😂
Great information
speak it to us! Looking forward to having ya'll do an eval on my 3500.
Thanks for the useful video, hi from the UK. Did you make the video for how to flip that metal bar in the hinge to restore them? My hinges are just like this, good on he left and bad on the right. I'd love to feel confident drilling that plate out of the hinges and flipping it so would love a video about that!
The clutch engages when that bimetalic strip bends and pushes a pin allowing circulation if viscus silicon that transfers tourque between impeller and turben.
Thank you! The latching pin had loosened and misaligned so that the secondary latching would t happen. Thanks to you, I solved my problem with a crescent a wrench.
What happens if I bore it and lock the fan permanently to the axe? Would this solution destroy the belt?
The paper test. The paper does not impact the speed of the fan at all but I never hear a roar.....
My Audi A4 B5 petrol ADT engine is overcooling after 75 miles per hr. Thermostat is ok, so I am a bit lost. Could the fan be a problem not disengaging if so how can I tell.
that one at 2;03 looks like a non-thermal clutch because it doesn't seem to have the thermal spring at the front. I keep hearing about the ROARRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but I havn't heard it yet. Some clutches are quiet I think.
another way to check the fan clutch is WARM THE ENGINE TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND THEN TURN IT OFF WHILE OBSERVING THE FAN, AND IF IT SPINS ON AFTER THE ENGINE STOPS; THE FAN CLUTCH IS EITHER BAD OR IT IS THE WRONG FAN-CLUTCH FOR YOUR VEHICLE, the fan should stop with the engine. Some fan-clutches are REVERSED. When buying a new one it is important to get the correct one for your model.
tyfys
brilliant, I really needed to know this! TY
So if it does occasionally hit +235 what do I look into to resolve the issue? I was told I might need to replace the coolant system all together in my 2006 T1N. Is that a probable resolution?
Do you follow Florida Van Man? Check his channel. Reach out to him. You will learn much and he is highly likely to respond! Happy Sprinting.
Do a radiator flush, use thermocure to remove rust, make sure all hoses are in good condition, check your radiator fins to make sure they're clear and free of oil, and other buildup, make sure your fan clutch is working properly as well.
Temp gauge on my 2002 T1N runs higher when going up hills and on hotter days. Tried the paper test to see if its the fan clutch is faulty, it seems strong, the paper didn't slow it down at all, I've not heard the fan clutch kick in, could it be faulty?
You are a sprinter god. Most useful video I've seen on fixing my old sprinter.
So in order to test the clutch the engine must be at operating temp?
Porque uno gira hasia un lado y la otra hasia el otro?
Thanks 😊
04 t1n , fan very hard to move hot/cold, no overheating, no roaring, Is it normal for it to be so tight where you can hardly move blade ?
Hey, awesome video! I am looking for the plastic part on top of the rear door bar, as seen st 6:34 in the video. Do you have any info on the little plastic part or a place I could buy one? Cheers
Helpful video. Thanks. However, I cannot find your armrests anywhere online.
Thank you! Will a bad fan clutch effect my A/C on a hot day?
Yeah, aside from making your engine overheat it can also fail to cool the condenser properly and the AC will not cool work as efficient.
OMG thank you for this! When i first got my van that needle never moved from 190 ever. that needle has been all over the place in the last two years, but never over that 3rd line. I just installed this year a new water pump, all hoses, clutch fan, and i just ordered a radiator. it was 95 deg with 95% humidity and it got closer to that 3rd line towing a 1000 lb and ac blasting. i was worried about head gasket but I pressure tested it and it leaked from aux water pump hoses and failed radiator.
