Teagate Tour 2021

A narrated walk through the gardens, June 12, near Wilmington, Delaware. Details: we have been here for 23 years, starting with a blank canvas (new construction in the woods). We have over 500 named hosta cultivars plus some of my own seedlings, along with dozens of ferns, epimediums, Japanese maples, and daylilies (plus many other oddities). Teagate Meadow Burn 2022
Просмотров 6662 года назад
Our backyard meadow, partly wetland, stays healthy due in part to our annual spring burn. (The "wet" part makes it a challenge to mow.) The two parts of the meadow are surrounded by paths, so the fire stays contained. Hoses and watering cans help us make sure of that. While the burn took around an hour (plus prep time), I have sped up portions to get through the boring bits.

    Do the pods grow after the flowers? I usually cut the scapes off after they flower. Is that why I’m not getting any? 🤔

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager 29 дней назад

      Yes, the pods form after the flowers. Not all flowers will produce seed pods, though.

    Really cool that you got them to grow so fast. Have you ever tried winter sowing them? Or autumn sowing them outside/or in a coldframe or greenhouse? Or do you know from other people if it usually works? I have no space inside and the only way for me is to cold sow my plants outside, and I intend to try out hosta.😊🌱

      @davidteager 29 дней назад

      Of course outdoor so 0:22 wing works, because that is how nature does it. But I do this as an indoor activity to keep me busy in winter. It also gives you much better protection if you are growing special hosta seeds.

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager 29 дней назад

      If you are breeding for variegated hostas, then you do not want green ones. You may have a breeding program targeted toward green hostas, so then they are OK.

      That depends significantly on where you live, how much water you can give them, and whether you can tolerate what they might look like at the end of August. Start with a fragrant hosta and see how they look.

    • @nattyw495

    You have created absolutely beautiful shade gardens! I’ve enjoyed this video tour so much, I must have replayed it dozens of times. I do hope you will do another video garden tour this summer! I am a shade gardener as well and enjoy the peaceful, lush foliage you can get in the shade. It’s easy on the eye and is my serenity. Wishing you the best with your seedlings. Maybe someday they will be available for sale. Happy gardening! 😊 🌱☀️

    In video #3 you had 100% plantaginea babies and plantaginea baby crosses, I assume by open pollination. Did you pollinate the plantaginea yourself with other plantaginea? How do you get them 100% plantaginea? Really enjoyed your videos by the way! Thank you!

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager 8 месяцев назад

      Because plantaginea blooms at night even with open pollination, they are certainly self pollinated.

  • @SarahMacNeil-mc8cs
    @SarahMacNeil-mc8cs 10 месяцев назад

    Would a fragrant bloom hosta produce fragrant seedling. These bloom much later than any others so im assuming they are self polinated.

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager 8 месяцев назад

      There is a good possibility, but it is never certain that seed from a fragrant hosta will produce a fragrant plant.

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager 29 дней назад

      If you make a cross with a fragrant hosta, it seems to be a coin, flip whether the seedlings become fragrant. That is my experience. If they are self pollinated, your chances would be higher.
