Setting Day, North Lake, Prince Edward Island May 5th, 2024
Tune in & turn up your sound to hear the crowd, the Piper play the bagpipes, & the roar of the engines as the fishermen & women head out to their fishing grounds to set their traps for lobster season.
It was a calm, cloudy & 2C temperature as they head out to sea. The air felt heavy as if there is weather coming.
Enjoy the video.

Due to crowding & pick up sound of the Piper, I had to relocate my position. This is part two of setting day at North Lake, PEI. The Piper, Larry Fitzpatrick plays the bagpipes as the boats sail out for traps to be set. Not only will you hear the Piper in this video but you will get to see him. Turn up your sound. May you all have a safe & prosperous season. Enjoy.
SETTING DAY AT NORTH LAKE, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND MAY 3RD, 2022, PART ONE
Просмотров 20 тыс.2 года назад
The lobster fishing has started again. It was a cold, zero degree temperature with light winds this morning. The sun was shining after a cloudy start. Lots of people were out in the cold to see all the fishermen & fisher women head out to set their traps. A piper played as they headed out. Due to the crowding, I had to move to get better viewing & hear the piper. Another video will follow.

This is at North Lake, PEI this morning, May 4th, 2021. It is Setting Day!! For those of you who were unable to be there or had never seen what it is like at a fishing port on Setting Day, sit back & enjoy the action & watch them sail. Everyone from infants to older people, many retired fishermen were out this morning in support, wishing them well, cheering them on, waving & even a Piper, Larry...
It's nice to send off the boats liker that and it looks like the whole town shows up. Well done!
Wow, saw a boat called Blue Thunder, bound to catch the biggest and tastiest lobsters 👍🏻
Nice place
If anybody had ever told me that there were so many boats in one harbor going out for lobster, I never would have believed it. Good luck to everybody and hurry up, I'm hungry for lobster.
It is already out there on the markets. Enjoy!
@@elcanmerry6248 Don't worry, I will even down here in Florida. Thanks for bringing them in. Pete
Es increíble todo el.mundo gira alrededor de esos barcos un orgullo para sus jentes
Q maravilla! Esos trabajadores de la mar suerte amigos🤗👍
Yes they are & we are lucky to have them.

Thank you! We are a small island where fishing, farming & tourism are our main industries.
I live in Western NY, USA. Love PEI people are great, food is great, and love the summer weather!!! Yeah to Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you!
Glad I'm not a lobster! Nice workboats.
If you ever visit PEI go north until you come to a place called North Rustico Harbor. We experienced some of the nicest people you could meet there while vacationing from Maine. We went fishing and donated our cod to the local church. Cod season had just reopened after being closed for 2 or 3 seasons. They were having a big celebration because of the cod season and the “new” potatoes were in. A wonderful time with lovely people.
Glad you enjoyed your time here. Thanks for you comment.
Much lovr😅🍻
PEI potatoes, best I've ever tasted. Got them at Stop&Shop in Cambridge MA years ago, you guys still ship them down he'a ?
May they all catch their limit and return safely.
Good video that was almost ruined by the bagpipes. Can’t he play another tune in that thing? 😂
Fair skies and and smooth seas, from coast of NC. Off myself tomorrow for the Gulfstream for tuna and Mahi.
Smooth sailing & prosperous catches to you as well.
Going to be a shortage of able bodied men around town for awhile.
Not really.
Where is this island ?

This was great to sea! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it. It is quite the excitement on setting day.
Best of luck to all you folks. I'm just a pleasure boater in Georgian bay, but a boat is a boat and this parade is a real treat.
I am glad you enjoyed it.
Love those boats they look overbuilt HD quality vessels.. I think they are mostly built by Provincial marine maybe..nice
Some are also used to tuna fishing a short time after the lobster season closes.

Only rich can afford Lobster
This is very cool👏👏👍👍I want to see it in person.😊
There are a lot of people who are family & friends of the fishermen & fisherwomen who come out early in the morning to see them off when they get the okay to go by the Dept of Fisheries at 6 am. For us we are up at 4am to get out to see this.
Do they do this every day?
@@SteveAumann Yes. They go out early in the morning at dawn. This season is from May 5th to July 4th. They had a delay this year due to the weather. I don't think they go out on Sunday.
Wow...are wooden traps still used?...question from southern NS
Yes there are the older type & some use square ones.
@@elcanmerry6248 I remember as a kid, walking the shoreline looking for flat stones to put in the traps for sinking.
@@davebell6025 Yes they did. Now they use cement blocks.
@@elcanmerry6248 theoretically I am an Islander. Born in Summerside in '54. Moved over here at 5 yoa. But went back each summer to see all the relatives. At my first raw Quogue with my uncle on Duke Street...I barfed.
@@davebell6025 I would be like that with clams! Quahogs! Lobster is so tasty as well as scallops & mussels.
Is there anything left after the natives plundered?
Our lobster season is short. This year from May 4 to July 4th. The next season is Aug. 10- Oct. 10 different area. There are lots of lobster.
You have a Robins Donuts? dang they all shut down here in BC. all we has now is Tim's. I want one of those boats, the license to fish they can keep I want to convert it to pleasure use.
what....does 3/4 of this Island fish for Lobsters? Holy crap!
Our main industries are farming, fishing & tourism
Wow what a fleet the departure is awesome those captains are good boatmen that's a narrow channel and they're darn near perfectly spaced what a sight
How many boats fish out of that port holy 💩
There are close to 90 just out of North Lake.
@@elcanmerry6248 27000 traps that’s a lot of gear for one port
👍
That's pretty cool. I finally made out to PEI last summer. Beautiful province.
From a land lubber in Alberta this was very interesting, blessings to all the fishermen and a great catch!
What amazes me is that there is anything left in the sea, after all are set!
There are lots there. They have a minimum size.
Pro Tip: It is exceptionally poor form to gripe about commercial fishermen or farmers with one's mouth full.
It is a highly regulated and fully sustainable fishery both in Canada and the US. All females that can bear eggs are returned to the water and there is a tight size limit for males that are kept. It is an amazing fishery. You should do some research. Peace.
great video thanks from st johns
How do they decide where to drop their traps? Is it first come first serve or is there an allocation process carried out beforehand?
Each boat makes several trips to set their traps. They hold a license for 300 each. Each person has their own fishing area marked with a plotter GPS.
Sail safe B'y!
Lot of boats…..what is the area they are fishing? Got to be large to accommodate all the traps!
Off shore of northeast Prince Edward Island, Canada. This only one port of many. See Map www.google.com/maps/place/North+Lake,+PE+C0A+2B0/@46.4198583,-63.6801404,185112m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m6!3m5!1s0x4b5e02f90a21b9bb:0xf1cb37376197b2b3!8m2!3d46.460939!4d-62.064994!16s%2Fg%2F12391zyp?entry=ttu
I pay 15 to 18 dollars a pound in the grocery store for lobster. I hope these brave men and women get their fair share. Not an easy life going to sea to earn a living.
In Naples, Florida I pay $35 for a Maine lobster lobster roll with french fries. You can buy just the lobster meat for $63 a pound. A boiled lobster dinner at a nice restaurant is about $50. The price makes it taste even better.
It's very nice that they make a festive occasion out of this. this is what makes a culture.

Miss watching the old way with the horses & cages.
That water is 4* degrees.
about that.
Nobody wears life jackets, and nobody can swim.
They are all required by law to wear the life jackets. They are much easier to work in them the way they are made now.
