Living that dad life and enjoying every moment of it. I started becoming truly interested in knives in 2015 and have finally convinced myself to share my passion through my collection while hoping to provide some useful knowledge I’ve picked up along the way. You'll find mostly modern folding pocket knives featured on this channel, but the occasional fixed blade or automatic will make an appearance. As the channel expands, so will the EDC gear being reviewed - flashlights, pens, wallets, etc. Looking forward to meeting new folks along the way!
Is the Bodacious an updated Shaman?!
COMP Series: Episode #4
Looking at the “upgrades” to the Shaman in the newly released, Bodacious. So many similarities, with very notable (I would say “improved”) changes - no finger choil nub, thinner blade stock.
0:00 Intro: What am I comparing?
0:15 Similarities: Hardware Positioning, Clip, Lock Type
1:40 Differences: Finger Choil, 2-way vs 4-way, Cutting Edge
6:11 Callout about Lack of Sharpening Choil
8:20 Slimmer Profile on Bodacious
11:31 Price Points
12:39 Shaman BHQ Exclusive, not “Sprint” Oops!

This is the design I've been dreaming of for the last 15 years. It's really unfortunate how many people are instantly shitting on this because of the price and S30V and crying about similarities to the Shaman. The differences for me are absolutely massive and I'll probably never buy another Shaman after they start making the Bodacious in steel variants.
I think it’s a better design over the Shaman, especially without the finger choil, thinner blade stock, and angled plunge grind.
❤ 👍🏻👊🏻
🍻 👊🏼
Both severely overpriced and underwhelming. S30v & g10 should be around $165-180 tops 😅
I would love the prices to be back in that price range! 😂. Feels like their pricing is now more reflective on their brand name and reputation rather than the materials.
Hard to go wrong with spyderco. They were my gateway drug into the hobby. Love the videos bro keep em coming. Ps- hit me up on the forum if you ever wanna swap one of those 2 beautiful Hinderers you got. Got lots of goodies you might be interested in 😂.
@@andrew5117 Appreciate the shine and support homie! 🙏🏼 👊🏼 I have so many more Spydercos in my collection compared to other brands 😆 I got you!! You’re the first on my list should I decide to switch up one of those Hinderers 😬
@@TriedandTrueEDC Yes sir you’re doing a great job happy to support one of my blade forum bros! Awesome man I appreciate that I have a slightly unhealthy love for Hinderers 😂
@@andrew5117 My man 👊🏼 🍻! Lol, I know that feeling - I question my unhealthy love of knives in general quite often 😆
@@TriedandTrueEDC it’s definitely a sickness 😂
@@andrew5117 🤣
I ordered a bodacious. Thx for review
My man 🙌🏼. Let us know how you like it. Appreciate you watching the review and for dropping a line! 👊🏼 🍻
@@TriedandTrueEDCI hate the finger/sharpening choil. It’s annoying when cutting down boxes especially with downward force. I’ve used it for years on many knives like manix 2, etc super annoying. I’m glad they got rid of it. The handle should be what’s in contact with our hand not the steel of the knife. It allows for more leverage. I also like how it’s thinner. Thick knives truly suck at cutting things. And I like how the width of the knife is large so as you keep sharpening it, there’s so much of it left. The PM 2, etc is already a worn out knife to begin with.
Nailed it! I’ve gotten so used to finger choils on Spyderco’s I’ve just accepted it 😂. Then I realize how many knives I also have, for which I enjoy, that don’t have one. I honestly think the Bodacious is much improved over the Shaman, whether or not that was the intention. Somewhat a tangent, but the way Oz did the finger choil on the Roosevelt is a much better design imo.
Didn’t even think about it until just now but it’ll be nice not to have that little nub that hits your finger on thr compression lock when you shut it like with the shaman. On another note, where’d you go to have your channel logo made into the table top design?
It’s a definite improvement without that nub. Really hoping they put out some sprints or exclusives on this model! I got my mat off Amazon: a.co/d/01u5aGC7 Hope that helps!
Nice comparison video, how it compares to the shaman is what most people want to know. Also wondering how the angled plung grind will effect being able to sharpen all the way to the plung grind. I think the pm2 and para 3 originally had a angled plung grind and i remember people mentioning it made it hard to sharpen up to the 90° plung without hitting the ricaso. Im guessing it was more of a problem on fixed angled systems and probably not a big deal if it was free hand sharpened.
Thank you 🙏🏼! Figured people would appreciate the close ups and callouts. Good point about the angled grind, I can definitely see it being more user friendly for people sharpening on an angled sharpening system. Ideally, I’d like to be more proficient at sharpening on stones, but have not invested enough time in learning - got spoiled using the angled ones 😂
🔥
👊🏼 🍻
The very first batch of Shamans were $155, but after that it was $180. They used the unexpected amount of QC fails due to scale contouring issues as the reason for that price increase.
$155?! Holy moly that’s a 75% increase over the years! Interesting, thanks for clarifying that for everyone!
@@TriedandTrueEDC The shaman prices have always been kinda nuts, IMO. The first sprint run, the cf/S90V version, was $280, the same price the S90V/Ti Millie was the year prior and a couple bucks more than the Mamba was.
@@CNYKnifeNutGood point, I do recall how much higher in price the first Shaman sprint was. I wouldn’t have guessed the Millie equivalent was priced that high 🤔
I tried to resist and couldn’t. Ordered one this morning. Wanted a different steel but I actually like s30v. Even more than m390
😂, I had the same challenges - told myself I didn’t need it, but as soon as I saw one drop from Indiana Knives, I snatched one up. Chalking it up to FOMO I guess. I’d agree about preferring S30V over M390 (find it more challenging to sharpen in my personal experience).
I like that it has thinner blade stock. Ill be picking one up when drop some in a tool steel. Don't know if they will do this in 15v but that would be nice to see.
A 15V would be amazing! Really, any tool steel would be nice 😂
Great blade. Mines comes in tomorrow
Yes! 🙌🏼 Let us know your thoughts!
I’ll take one of each please 😳 :)
🤣 yes!! 🙌🏼
@@TriedandTrueEDC👍🏻👊🏻
Hearing her say Spyderco para 3 was awesome!
🙏🏼 I had her practice it a few times before filming 😅
Wow! It looks great! I want the same scales!
I’m looking forward to how it’ll patina on the brass scales!
Is that Damascus steel 😮
Yup, Chad Nichols Damascus. They have a Magnacut version as well.
Wow 😮!! Gorgeous 👍🏻👊🏻👀
It really is something to behold, thanks for your support brother! 👊🏼
Can we do scale swaps on this?
I’m 99% sure you can as the only difference is the liners not being milled out - unlike the PM2 and Millie 2 Crucarta models having exposed liners.
Thatsa really nice knife, nice pickup. I have the frn and k390 version, it's such a good cutting tool. Have you used spydercos vg-10 core Damascus before, is it just for show or does it preform good?
I’ve only put it through light use - food prep, but no box cutting yet. I’ll follow up after further use! Love me some K390 👊🏼
😘What a beautiful blade!😘🔪
100% agreed! 👊🏼
Wow beautiful knife brother !
Don’t know what took me so long to get one! 😂
@@TriedandTrueEDC I was thinking the same thing but I don’t have one “yet” 😆
@@thefactor6909😂
Omg did you get that for your little sweetie?
Lol no, those are my buddy’s, but I do have a few other ones I bought her 😂
The handle reminds me of the old Gerber Gator Edit: which is apparently still being made?!? Advertising all their modern terrible knives, but keeping their $70 us made folder in 154cm a secret is peak Gerber.
I’m not familiar with the Gator, but now I’m intrigued! Thanks!
Love me some 154CM ❤ Great looking knife 👌🏼
I don’t have too much experience with 154CM, but looking forward to putting it to work!
This one intrigued me. Good design and pedigree. I love the subtle handle milling
Me too! Handle is definitely the biggest plus for me.
They did a nice job on the contouring of the handles and the stonewash. Does it fire hard or is it a softer auto?
It fires hard - reminds me of a Protech.
That's an amazing looking knife. Ive always liked the look of that knife but never picked one up cause i feel like id need to get it reground to be a good user for me. But i can see getting one of these fancy one's for a nice knife carry but still being badass. I have some great knives but no knives that look like this, i think i need one.
I’d agree that this knife isn’t made to be a slicer, but more of an overbuilt option. This is the nicest design I have from their line and it’s definitely a looker lol. I do like how they continue to create interesting designs too. I won’t be an enabler…. 🤣
🔥🔥🔥
The artwork is legit!
I have one of these in the same finish. It has one of the best actions in my collection and it is the 1st Gen. Great knife !
Sweet! I can't recall if I ever handled the Gen 1, but certainly enjoy the one I have right now.
Thats a nice version of the military, always like the look of the fluttered ti. I actually saw one yesterday on blade binge but dam are these expensive. Your right about the tip down clip for larger knives, it never bothered me on the military.
I was a bit surprised myself when I saw this pop up for what I thought was reasonable, lol. I can’t recall if I mentioned the cost, but it was $275 off BladeForums. I wonder if they’ll release the Millie 2 with a titanium handle.
I hope the do a re-release of the flutted ti scales
@@chriswebb3018yes!! That would be lovely
Mine is a little off center 🫤
Mine is too, favors the clip side (RH carry). I haven’t tinkered with it, but there’s a chance it may improve after a good ol cleaning/re-lubing.
Clearly I'm a noob at this live streaming business, sorry for the neck cramp watching this sideways!
A couple of my favorites are the mini K2 and AG Russell Acies. The mini K2 has an XM24 sized blade, in a handle that's half an inch shorter than a PM2. The Acies has a quarter inch more blade than an inkosi and a half inch shorter handle.
You know, I do recall the mini K2 being very well-balanced! Haven't tried an AG Russell, would you recommend the Acies?
@@TriedandTrueEDC Absolutely! It's possibly my favorite knife. It's not perfect, and it's 15 years old but it's basically an Inkosi with none of the aspects that the CRK detractors complain about most. Edit: I do a bit of prototype testing, and for the first time ever, Im gonna be able to publicly document the process. I'm gonna make a video comparing it against a few good, bad and mediocre framelocks. I'll be going into a ton of detail about the Acies.
@@CNYKnifeNut sweet! Looking forward to that comparison! I’ll need to start researching the Acies now 😂
Have a KME, works good for me. Never had any nitro-v, but have sharpened k390,Maxamet and other tool steels no problem. Cool video 👍🏻
I've always had a KME or EdgePro in mind, but ended up trying multiple WorkSharp options -- may opt in for an upgrade when I move into a bigger house lol. Which steel did you feel took the longest to sharpen? I've sharpened my Para 3 Maxamet and it was surprisingly easy. Thanks for the shine 👊
@@TriedandTrueEDC 🤔probably k390. I was new too sharpening and I got it sharp but not as sharp as I k ow it could be. I’ve been just wearing down factory edges in my collection and slowly getting back into sharpening.
@@DuhYaThink I haven’t tried sharpening K390 yet, only have a PM2 with that steel. I’ve realized that 90% of knives I’ve sharpened end up being sharper than the factory edge, and I’d consider myself an intermediate. Something cathartic about sharpening your knives 😂
Love Spyderco knives. Have a bunch. I just don’t get the titanium scale “love affair”. A clip and screws is enough titanium for me. But hey, that’s what makes people happy I’m all for it 🤙🏻
Lol, I honestly don’t fully understand why I’m all about Ti folders. Part of it may be from the wear overtime and the overall “feel” in hand.
@@TriedandTrueEDC That’s fair 👍🏻
I'm carrying my ti/cf s90v version today. I had one of the super early, heat colored ones but didn't like it at all. The lock bar was really spongy. I'm not sure if I had a dud, or if they were all like that but all the newer versions I've handled have had perfect lockbar tension. Edit: the insert does serve as an over travel stop
Very nice! I have a couple Millies in the collection, but have always wanted the fluted Ti. I've seen the heat colored ones, but was never compelled to pick one up.
Awesome review man, I love my bowies. Forever pieces imo especially how hard it was for me to get the first 2 variants.
Thanks brother! Got my eye on the OG should it ever pop up for a reasonable price 😂
Never handled one
I think it's worth checking out if you find a good deal on one, but nothing earth shattering. The allure outweighs reality imo.
@TriedandTrueEDC definitely not something I'd overpay for. There's not much of that going around these days thankfully since the secondary has basically tanked on everything
@@chucknunface Agreed! It’s nice to see the secondary isn’t outrageous on the Bowie.
The spyderco bowie is a good knife but i personally think my drunken is better. I modified my bowie to make the handle more comfortable because my hand landed on the peak at the bottom of the handle. I definitely like how spyderco does there frame lock knives on washers and wish they would do more.
I tried the Drunken a while back and remember the pocket clip being a hot spot for me, so I ended up passing on it. Then I see all these A.purvis clips on them 😂. I would agree about the washer frame locks from Spyderco being very well done. I actually prefer the Spydiechef a bit more - the Paysan would’ve been nice on washers
@@TriedandTrueEDC your right the stock drunken clip is bad, I currently have the lynch milled clip on mine. The paysaan is a good knife but way to thick and cut like crap, also mine had bad lock stick so I sold it. But I bet it would of been good on some thick skiff washers.
@@chriswebb3018 I love me some Lynch clips lol. Yeah, the Paysan is not meant for slicey tasks at all. I've never tried Skiff washers, but have been reading how popular they are -- especially on the Rosie. What are your experiences with them?
@@TriedandTrueEDC I think the skiff washers are great, especially cause there only like $5 for a pair. Currently I have them in my mcnees Mac 2 3.5 and my full size Arius and they are perfect for those 2 knives because they have heavier blades. I tried them in my rosie but prefer bearings, the blade is so light that it didn't feel as free moving, although I didn't give it time to break in either. I'd give them a shot, especially if your gonna use them in a knife with a heavier blade. Both my mcnees and Arius are still drop shut but instead of a guillotine, they are more of a controlled drop shut.
@@chriswebb3018 I took your advice and bought 4 pairs! 😂. One each for my McNees, Arius, FSD, and Paysan. Thanks for the recommendation 👊🏼
Don't see these very often! Fradon is my local knife shop.
Sweet! Not too many around where I live, it’s all mostly online shopping for me lol.
I like this one
It’s a nice little fixed blade, I’ll bring it in sometime!
The original was 299, but ended up being heavily discounted (180-200) when discontinued. I paid 330 for a Bowie and K2, in (I think) early 2016.
I periodically kick myself for not grabbing both of those when they were available!! Very nice that you have both!
@@TriedandTrueEDC I sold the Bowie as soon as they skyrocketed in price, but the K2 is still one of my favorite and most used knives. I put CF scales on it to make it a liner lock. It's probably the knife that's had the single biggest impact on my preferences. I think if Spyderco would have made their other frame locks from that era (advocate, domino, mantra) on washers instead of their horrible version of bearings, then the Bowie would never have become what it has.
@@CNYKnifeNut I had one of the Mini K2’s from Farid and liked the design, but wasn’t sure how I liked chisel grinds so I sold it, plus it was a bit blocky. I can’t recall if the Techno 3 is on washers, but that one intrigues me.
Nice edc fixed blade, like the handle on it.
I showed my daughter all the options and she chose this one lol
Only ltw I have is a gen 5 in a2 and it's pretty amazing
I’m looking forward to putting some miles on this one and will most likely start looking at other LTW models

Good ol Gerber! Got you entered homie, thanks!
Olamic makes some great knives and the Wayfarer is definitely one of them
I’m on the hunt for the right Whippersnapper!
I really like the handle on this 🤗
