well, to be honest, it's not uncommon for people who grew up without one of their parents to become a messed up adult. I'm not justyfing him, I'm explaining the possible cause.

I'm no apologist for the man, goodness knows, but he didn't hit the horse on this occasion; he slammed his mallet into the ground. There would have been a lot more reaction from the pony if he/she had been hit with that amount of force. He is a profoundly unpleasant man who is an extremely poor loser, but at least on this video he didn't appear to hit his pony. Which is not to say that he hasn't in the past, nor that he won't in the future.
