I want to use mosfet as a load device with current regulation, can you give me the formula to calculate the actual power when mosfet operates linearly like that, because when mosfet is not running in saturation, it gets very hot.
Using a MOSFET as a load device with current regulation in its linear region (also known as the active region) means the MOSFET is acting more like a variable resistor than a switch. This mode of operation can lead to significant heat generation because power dissipation increases due to the voltage drop across the MOSFET. Here’s the breakdown: Key Parameters 1. Drain-Source Voltage (VDS ) The voltage drop across the MOSFET. 2. Drain Current (ID ) The current flowing through the MOSFET. 3. Power Dissipation (PDISS ) The power dissipated as heat in the MOSFET. Power Dissipation Formula When a MOSFET operates in the linear region: PDISS =V𝐷𝑆 ⋅ID Why MOSFETs Heat Up in Linear Mode In linear mode: #The MOSFET is not fully turned ON, so there is a significant voltage drop across V𝐷𝑆. #Both the voltage drop and the current contribute to power dissipation. Current Regulation in Linear Mode *For current regulation, the MOSFET's gate voltage (V𝐺𝑆 ) is adjusted so that it sets the desired I𝐷. *However, the resistance between the drain and source (R𝐷𝑆(𝑜𝑛) ) and the operating voltage significantly affect the heat generated. _____________________________________________________________________ Example Calculation # Given: * V𝐷𝑆=5 V * I𝐷 = 2 A # Power Dissipation: * P𝐷𝐼𝑆𝑆=V𝐷𝑆⋅I𝐷=5 V⋅2 A=10 W This 10 W will be dissipated as heat, so proper heat sinking or cooling is crucial. ___________________________________________________________________ Tips for Using MOSFETs as Load Devices 1. Choose a High-Power MOSFET Select a MOSFET with a high P𝑚𝑎𝑥 rating and low R𝐷𝑆(𝑜𝑛). 2. Use Heat Sinks or Cooling To manage heat dissipation effectively. 3. Consider a Linear Power Dissipation Model Use active cooling or a higher-wattage MOSFET if the heat exceeds manageable levels. 4.Design for Power Dissipation Ensure that V𝐷𝑆 and I𝐷 are within the safe operating area (SOA) of the MOSFET. ___________________________________________________________________ If heat is too excessive, you may want to explore switching mode circuits (PWM with a capacitor filter) to achieve current regulation more efficiently. These are much more thermally efficient than using the MOSFET in linear mode.
