Welcome to the SWLSignals channel. This channel would feature what I am hearing on the shortwave bands from my own radios and web SDRs. I will showcase shortwave broadcasts from other countries, utilities, number stations, digital, CW, FAX, and other decodes. There are several signals out there, lets discover!
Below are some links to sites I use while scanning the bands and listening to help identify what I am hearing.

Good reception! I have also received a good signal from Shannon here in Monte Hermoso, Argentina.
Excellent! I was surprised that I was able to hear it that well with just the telescopic.

I like bandscans in the park. Maybe you'll try wire antenna instead of telescopic?
@oz_dx I did that about a month ago and the results were good. Ill do that bext time as a revisit video to see it works. Maybe I'll compare signals with the wire and without. That may be interesting!

Interesting! Thanks to you, and the original person that gave you the tip that you passed along to the rest of us. I've never heard of Rivet...or these modes.
You're welcome, my friend. That's all part of the short wave mystery finding new modes of communications, and seeing if we can find out what they're saying. Thanks again
Does that software work with xpb transmissions ? Excellent video ,thanks for uploading this , i will share this with friends .
I don't see it in the list of options. I see XPA(20 baud), XPA(10 baud), and XPA2. There are other modes, but not XPB. Next time I stumble across an XPB, I will give it a try. Maybe some other mode will work. Who knows?
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp thanks for the reply. I can receive and hear xpb transmission on a xhdata d109 ,no ssb on this radio , but I can't receive or hear xpa or xpa2 on this radio .
@icabobcrane8984 interesting. Does XPB not transmit in USB?

@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp You're welcome 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊.
Just curious, when you had your wire antenna up, how did it compare to the loop antenna (s). I am thinking about getting a sdrplay duo and trying two mla 30 loops pointing in opposite directions and a a long piece of wire in the hi-z port. I am in a rural area so I hope I will have little interference. Thanks and keep those videos coming.
The wire was 80 feet and was oriented in a SE/NW direction. The performance wasn't too bad. But the noise level was higher, and the 3 ft MLA 30+ outperformed it. I wish I had a bigger piece of property so I could string up a longer piece of wire. At the termination point, I used only the wire and clipped it to the telescopic of my portables, no coax. So this may have accounted for the higher noise and lack of performance. Thanks for watching and commenting! More videos to come.
Can someone download the software or does one have to buy a KiWi SDR?
The kiwisdr is a web page that you can use any SDR on the page. You can go to the webpage, I believe that have some info on the software. I don't think can download it though.
The Frog
It does sound like it!
It's XSL a.k.a. The Slot Machine on shortwave.
What is the little red light under the 5 for? I noticed that sometimes it is lit and sometimes not.
@@KarlWitsman it comes on when the backlight comes on.
@@KarlWitsman I use an SDR as well, but I like spinning the dial as well.
Since I worked at Radio Shack, I got an employee discount (10%) so I bought a few models that Sangean made for Radio Shack. They were good radios. Sadly, all my radios have succumbed to dust or time. That's why I'm using an SDR now with a laptop. Sometimes I miss the turning of the dial, but I would not trade it for being able to see the signals on the screen. I've gotten spoiled. But I keep thinking about one of the Tecsun brand just for portable.
I also use an SDR, and I love the visualizations, although I enjoy tuning the portables since its keeps the mystery alive of unknown signals.
I use an MLA-30 as well that is mounted to our back deck about 15-18 feet off the ground.
@@39elden how's the reception?
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp the reception is good. It makes the signal a little stronger and reduces the noise.
@39elden ok thank you. Happy listening!
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp TY
I enjoy your band scans in the park a lot. It is somehow soothing plus I have learned a lot from you about the various utility signals. Do you also listen from home with your portable radios or only the SDR? What is the reception difference in your home vs the park?
Well thank you! I am glad to help! Yes I do listen at home with my SDR and portables. I have some other videos showing some reception from various signals on both of these radios. The reception is good, but of course, there is more noise in my home environment. It is about S4 to S5 noise at home. But I still can hear a lot of signals.
It looks like parallel transmissions of WWVH and WWV on 10000kHz and CHU on 14670kHz.
They would both have the same rate of the time pips and announcements, but of course different content.
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp Thank you 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
You're welcome
Thanks for sharing. Interesting the loop closer to the ground works better. do you need to orient the loop to catch specific signals?
One of the best things about the MLA30 is that it be rotated to find the spot when it nulls out the noise. I have both of mine oriented in a NE/SW direction. This seems to be the best direction for my setup.
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp thanks 🙏

Nice radio. Looks like a Radio Shack model that I have seen before. Love your bandscans. You actually help me find some things actually across the bands.
Yes Radio Shack had the DX398 which was the sane radio. Thanks for the compliment, I am happy you find them helpful.
0:55 Nice signal from New Zealand. Enjoy your bandscans. 73 and have a great day.
@@RJDA.Dakota thank you. They have some good programming. The signal comes in well to Florida in the morning.
PL 990x is louder I guess. What's that signal though?
It is a Japan Navy channel marker. It's nickname is the Japanese slot machine due to its sound. They say it resembles a slot machine sound when someone wins. The sound you hear is the signal "idle" mode. When it has actual data (digital) to send, the tone changes. I've never a voice transmission on the frequency before. There are three frequencies in the 8000kH band for this signal, 8313, 8588 and 8703 kHz. I can only hear them in Florida in the mornings between 1000-1200 UTC.

After looking at the comments between you and I, I am thinking this may not be a channel marker since it is not broadcasting all the time. When it starts tonight, I'm going to check some KiwiSDRs around the globe to see which one has the strongest signal. This may help in determining where it may be coming from.
I hear it on 8365 here in Florida at about an S7, I also tried various SDRs via Kiwi SDR in Europe and Russia. The strongest signal, just above an S9 was from Univ Of Twente SDR in The Netherlands.
i also use the twente sdr, found multiple frequencies with the same tone 4365, 6365, and 8365 kHz. the first two frequencies sound stronger, and all three were heard around the same time as before (didnt take down exact) def keep posted on what you find out (edit: youtube comments are buggy lol)

Yes, Radio Marti is on 7335 from 1000-1200 (which is when I was listening), I normally use eibispace.de to validate what I am hearing. I also use shortwavedb.org and shortwave-info.com. Shortwavedb.org has a cool feature that uses Google Maps to show where the transmitter is located, along with some awesome pictures on the antennas they use.
Also, checkout my playlist "Band Scans" for all the band scan videos I have done thus far.
I really enjoy your band scans in the park with commentary. Can you refer me to some sort of chart as to when to turn on USB, LSB vs AM?
I am not aware of a chart, but all AM broadcasts for international broadcasts, such as BBC, Radio Romania China Radio Intl, all broadcast in AM. Utilities such as aeronautical stations, marine weather stations, channel markers, all transmit in USB. Amateur radio (HAM) in the lower HF band, 160, 80, 40 meter bands use USB for digital, LSB for voice. 30, 20, 17,15, and 10 meter bands use USB for everything. Here is a link for HAM frequencies: www.arrl.org/files/file/Regulatory/Band%20Chart/Band%20Chart%20-%2011X17%20Color.pdf Some other helpful links: www.dxing.com/tuning.htm www.dxinfocentre.com/ There is a ton on websites for shortwave radio. And RUclips has some excellent videos on this topic as well. Thank you for watching and commenting. Any other questions, feel free to email me or drop me a comment on a video you watch.
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp I was noticing that when you got to 5.1 mHz you switched to USB from AM and I saw you do that again at 6.2 mHz. I wondered if there were a list of those break points where you turn USB on /off. I have the international broadcast band chart that shows the 60M band ending at 5.06 and the 49M band starting at 5.95M, so is the USB stuff in between those bands?
@TheTaxman45 there us some aeronautical utilities between those bands and some others as well. For example, RAF1 VOLMET in at 5450kHz and Shannon VOLMET is at 5505 kHz. Usually when you are scanning between the broadcast bands, you want to be in USB.
Do you ever use software to interpret weather fax or other teletype or cw signals?
Yes, I use the HF Weather app on my Android tablet and phone to decode them. i also use the Morse Expert for CW, DroidNavtex for NAVTEX, DroidRTTY for RTTY, and FT8RX for FT8.
The original Tropical Radio Telegraph station WNU closed down years ago. The station was sold, and the current licensee is GLOBAL HFNET LLC. with offices located at 777 S. Flagler Dr., Suite 602 East, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. It lists a Mr. Joseph Jacobs as President of the company. The point of contact is listed as: Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel & Frederick, P.L.L.C. Mary Ann K Endo, 1615 M St. NW, Suite 400 Washington, DC 20036. All the old telegraph frequencies are still listed in the F.C.C. ULS system. There is also an associated facility located at 1745 Highway 53, Rosston, AR. The same GLOBAL HFNET LLC also now is licensee of WLO as well. My guess is they are government contractors. You should send a QSL request to the Arkansas station. It would be very, very interesting if you receive a QSL letter or card. The signal you heard on 8,749 kc/s originated from the Arkansas facility, and it's licensed to WLO, although they identified WNU. Probably a technical error.
Thank you for the info. I'll send the QSL and let you know what happens
