The Vietnamese people are quite welcoming and nice if you try to speak a few basic Vietnamese phrases. But you should still be careful with your scooter and phone in larger Vietnamese cities. I like VN as it allows you to enjoy quality food and services and accommodations at a really good price. What you tell about Canada is very much the same as the US, very individualistic culture and society. Vietnam is very communal, even the way they drive "don't hit me and I won't hit you, let's just share the road", from the way they eat (shared food dishes) to the way they live and work. Some may not like it but some will like the mutual support. Vietnamese will be very curious about you so they will stare, touch you but that's curiosity, not malicious intent.
