Yes, traveling in Oman by self-drive is very safe. However, we chose to hire a guide as we were traveling nearly 200 km away from the city center to explore various sightseeing spots. Oman is known for its strict traffic rules, and the fines can be quite hefty. So, we decided to have a local guide with us who not only knew the best spots to visit but also had excellent knowledge of the roads and local insights.

We traveled in October 2024, and they asked for a copy of our International Driving License when renting a car. We recommend carrying one to be on the safe side. You can also check their official website for any recent updates regarding short-visit tourists. However, having an International Driving License is always advisable.

However, if it’s unsuccessful, you won’t be allowed to proceed, and in some cases, you may need to go through the visa process if PAR unsuccessful, which can be lengthy. To avoid any hassle, it’s always safer to complete the process in advance and check your status beforehand.
