Certain elements of this scene were recycled in an online fanfiction story entitled “The Infinity Stones Return: Captain America’s Final Adventure.” In the chapter where he travels to Vormir, our hero first recovers Romanoff’s body and places the Soul Stone on her chest which causes the stone to transform into a form of pure energy (orange-colored of course) which is then absorbed into her body and brings her back to life. Thanks to her new symbiosis with the Soul, Romanoff then informs Cap that she will now lead him to the hidden water pool that Barton was send to and retrieved the stone from, and where the stone must now be returned. Before the pair can begin their descent back down the mountain though, a menacing spacecraft appears in the sky above. Cap then explains to Romanoff that when future-Nebula was captured and interrogated by 2014-Thanos, she was eventually forced to reveal that Romanoff and Barton where enroute to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone, and so Thanos organized and dispatched this ship full of henchmen to intercept them. Fortunately for Barton, they didn’t arrive until now, thereby allowing him to transport home with the stone before being captured or killed, but unfortunately for Cap and Romanoff, they must now engage and defeat these nasty henchmen themselves. After the battle is finally over and the two heroes begin their descent down the mountain toward the hidden water pool, their dialogue reveals that once the Soul Stone is properly returned, Romanoff’s own soul will likewise depart again thus causing her body to die once more. This is something that regrettably cannot be undone due to the condition of the “everlasting exchange” that allowed Barton to take the stone in the first place. Upon their arrival at the water pool, Romanoff gives Cap her remaining vial of Pym Particles, which he will later use for his return-trip “home” in the final episode. The pair then say their tearful goodbyes as they both walk out into the middle of the pool where the energy inside Romanoff re-emerges and transforms back into the solid Soul Stone which then falls into the water and vanishes. Romanoff then embraces Cap one final time before dying in his arms.
