Thank you so much for this video. I think you touched up on a lot of very, very important ideas. I found myself googling the book references, while simultaneously trying to manage my own thoughts that I had in reaction your conversation. Like Patrick, I have a fascination with psychology and philosophy. In particular, I've been interested in questions related to the final topic in your discussion: technology and its psychological effects. With regard to this latter idea, Patrick briefly mentioned the relevance of space and existing in a shared environment, which, as he mentioned, gets lost in the virtual environment. I'm paraphrasing his ideas while mixing them with my own, but his observations seems to vindicate the phenomenologist's belief in the importance of the body and the environment in "intersubjective" relationships with others. I've often wondered how "intersubjectivity" is disrupted by smart-phone use or talking to people online. How important IS the body in empathy? Were the phenomenologists preoccupied with the body because they were living in a time when humans were less technologically sophisticated and were therefore unaware of digital forms of empathy? Or is existing in a shared "UMWELT" essential to the "MITWELT"? Food for thought. Anyway, thank you again for this interview!

Hi Johannes, this is Patrick. I wanted to comment on a few of your questions. The phenomenologists in the mid-20th century were generally skeptical of technology (most notably Heidegger). But it wasn't so much that their technology wasn't as advanced as ours is now. It was what technology does. Heidegger uses the word Techné in contrast to physis (nature/natural). Natural changes are organic and fit into the local ecology, such as deer who create trails by finding the easiest pathways through the forests. Techne is a change that is imposed on nature, like a bulldozer cutting its way through a forest. (I have a forthcoming book chapter about this if you want to e-mail me.) The important detail when looking at technology is that we do not merely use it; it also uses us. THat is to say, the relationship is reciprocal. Wearing a watch helps us know what time it is, but it also transforms our relationship to time from "the time it takes to walk from here to my 1pm class" to "the collection of 1-second intervals counted off on my watch." Today you and I would get pretty nervous if it was 1:02 and our 1pm appointment had not yet arrived. Watches have transformed our relationship to time. Not all phenomenologists are against technology. Don Ihde has several books where he explores technology in creative and optimistic ways. He has developed a method called post-phenomenology which studies the ways technology shapes human experience (and it isn't all bad). Another scholar worth looking into is Glen Mazis (Humans Animals, Machines: Blurring Boundaries). I would say that smart phone use has changed intersubjectivity. We are with each other differently now that smart phones and social media have transformed our awareness of being together. Friends can share physical space yet interact digitally, such as at a lunch table yet on their phones. Not necessary more impoverished, I might say, just different. I would also say that the body is essential for empathy, at least as I understand it. Empathy is feeling-with: I feel broken when I see my wife crying. I feel her hurt. It is not an intellectual knowing, but an embodied one. We get a taste of this when we watch a kid fall off their skateboard and onto the handrail on RUclips, but then the feeling disappears as we click onto the next video. THese meetings are visceral, but more transient than it would be in person.

@@patrickmwhitehead Thank you for responding to my comment! I really enjoyed reading it (and more than once). I like the watch example! I'm stilling learning my Heideggerian terminology, but perhaps what the watch shows is a situation where the "factual" and "factical" come together. I think I read somewhere that Heidegger makes a distinction between two different types of facts. When I step on a scale, it's true that I weigh 200lbs (well, maybe when I was still in college it was true), which is a "fact," but my weight as I experience it is a difference sort of "fact." Technology change the way that 200lbs is no longer a mathematical abstraction, but it also means that I can't use certain office chairs or go on certain roller coaters, so the "factual" fact of weighing 200lbs is equated with the "factical" fact of my inability to properly use an office chair with a very low weight limit. The quantitative fact of weighing 200lbs comes together with the projection of my future possibilities (which won't include sitting in certain office chairs that don't accommodate my size). When I said that phenomenologists had less advanced technology, I suppose I was referring to the manner in which Zoom, FaceTime, Facebook ,etc. transform the way empathy takes place. Husserl wasn't aware that it was possible to see another person's face when that person lives 1000miles away, even though that foreign strata of experience (that is NOT mine) is nonetheless given to me through this screen I am looking at. Personally, I use Discord when I game online, and it's interesting to think of the way that you can rely on an audio stimulus, i.e., the other person's voice, to infer someone else's mental states. Ludwig Binswanger talked about something called "tuned space" [gestimmte Raum], which shows the way that auditory sensations reveal a separate kind of spatial understanding, I think. It seems like Husserl, particularly in Ideas I, was so fixated on visual experience that the analysis seems one-sided. My German is awful, so I can't read Binswanger's untranslated article on this, but I wonder if Discord provides an alternate way for space to be given in this manner. Suppose I hear my acquaintance drop his drink, then this reveals some kind of information about THEIR lived and embodied spatial existence.
