The Drummully Polyp, or Coleman Island, is a Republic of Ireland enclave in Northern Ireland, southwest of Clones, Co. Monaghan. Only reachable through the Finn River from Ireland, the narrow tree shaped enclave can be accessed by road only from Northern Ireland! This is where the Border line is the most sinuous, and crossing the narrow neck of the enclave from East to West means going through ...

    Thank you for the video. It must be very odd having to cross the border a few times when you are on the same road. I do hope there will be no obstacles for those who live here in the future at all.

    Very interesting video thanks. I’ve read about the so called ‘ Drummully Polyp’ and am intrigued by it. How does it function without road access from the Republic? By that I mean how is it policed how do ambulances and fire engines access it how is the mail delivered? All of these things must first cross into the UK or does the UK provide these services for them on a concessionary basis? I’ve not been able to find any definitive information on this but would be interested to find out.

      It's a very big problem, since there is no direct road from the Republic to the Polyp. The neck is closed by a river crossed by no bridge so the only wayin would be using choppers.

      @@weneedtotalkabouttheborder Really!? So you’re saying that the mail is delivered by a chopper and the Gardai and Fire Service also enter from the Air?

    • @weneedtotalkabouttheborder
      @weneedtotalkabouttheborder 3 года назад

      @@winco68 We don't ! But considering that there is no road connecting the Republic to the Polyp, we see no other way. And you're right, we should investigate in order to find out exactly how they deal with the situation there.

      Did you ever find out?

    • @winco68
      @winco68 Год назад

      @@SK-qe9br Yes I did. An Irish person contacted me via the Quora app and told me the outcome after a detailed discussion with a local Garda in the area. Fire, Ambulance and Postal services are allowed to travel through UK territory overland in order to reach the polyp. With the Police it’s slightly different they can travel through UK territory in order to reach the Polyp but they must do so out of uniform and in unmarked vehicles. Apparently they are in uniform but just wear a long civilian coat until they cross the border and put it back on before they return. All this talk of helicopters etc is pure nonsense apparently!

    Was there a hard border here before the UK and Ireland joined the EU / EEC?

    • @weneedtotalkabouttheborder
      @weneedtotalkabouttheborder 3 года назад

      There may have been in some places. But a lot of roads were unapproved, and others bombed to prevent crossing. But people from both sides sometimes came to fill bomb holes in order to reopen the roads.
