Nine Emperor Gods 九皇爺 Festival 2024 in Penang
The Nine Emperor Gods festival is one of the most important celebrations in the year for ethnic Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. The festival is known for vegetarian food, colourful parades, superhuman feats and mediums in trance.
During this year's festival (Oct 3 - 11 2024), I visited temples in Penang. In the final 3 days, I moved back and forth the island and the mainland. I ended up making three visits to the Tow Boo Kong Temple 北海斗母宫 in Butterworth. The other two temples I visited on the island were in Macallum Street Ghaut and on Burma Road.
As I learn more about this fascinating cultural heritage, I also enjoy delicious vegetarian meals at the various food stalls set up near t...

Pongal festival in Madurai - friendliest locals I've ever met!

I spend four nights in Madurai, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Hello @yongkavee, thank you for sharing your experience! I wanted to check with you on something regarding the traditional village celebration. Did you have to book the tour in advance with Tamil Nadu tourism board or you just walked in to their office to join tour on the same day?

Hello Matt from Germany. In the scene you mentioned, they're not fighting. The men in yellow are spirit mediums. They might occasionally make sudden movements, so they are escorted by temple members. In Malaysia, even with big crowds, things are always orderly and public fights are rare. That's because we're a peace-loving and kind society✌️. Thanks for watching, Matt!

Greetings from Tamil Nadu!! Regarding your concern for the bulls, these bulls are raised exclusively for this festival by the owner. They are treated like one of the family members and are taken care of properly. If not for jallikattu, they would be sent to slaughter house which is really bad. This age old tradition is important for this breed to survive.

Hello KaVee, this is such an interesting video. I love how raw it is, without filter 😆. My husband is asking if you had tummy aches 😅 because he would definitely have plenty if he went on a eating and drinking spree like you. It's incredible how much Malaysia and India are similar. If you only showed me the clips on the shoplots, I would have easily thought we were in Brickfields 😆

Hello Ms Elaine! Thanks for watching. Nope, no tummy aches. I tried to be careful with water but I "slipped up" and had the jigarthanda drink, but it didn't cause problems, so I stuck to the same shop whenever I wanted it. I also tried to limit the amount of spicy food I had. Yes, culturally, there are many similarities between south India and Malaysia - I quickly felt at ease there. I'm looking forward to visiting again!
