Shining a Light presents Children's Theatre Kits
Taking place across schools in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, artist Rachel Carter and the volunteers from Nottinghamshire Mining Museum delivered a creative heritage activity sharing our mining heritage. Over 150 children took part and this little short shows a little of the creative activity.
Special thanks to Eric, a retired miner for his wonderful 'Show & Tell' sessions in the schools and for sharing his story for our narration.
About
Shining a Light: Museum in the Park is a campaign to create a commemorative sculpture on the Miners’ Park, at Berry Hill, Mansfield, Notts, to remember the sacrifice and celebrate the achievements of Nottinghamshire’s coal mining communities.

    This looks really interesting but what practical functions can it have? First idea would be as a hanging nest for a Bird in the garden?

      Hi, thank you for watching. It is purely sculptural to decorate an area of the garden however, I have a number of spheres displayed in my garden and they are used very regularly by small garden birds. Once a mother bird used it as a nursery, all her fledglings were sitting inside whilst she darted around the garden collecting insects for them, it was really lovely to see.

      Thank you for your comment, I'm open to any sculpture project particularly that has a focus on womens history. As I'm East Midlands based it does tend to be commissions that has a connection to the Midlands such as the Mayflower story and the story of Cotton. The hijab rejection is interesting and could be a great piece of art with a community engagement project.

      @@rachelcartersculpture874 Thanks, I've been braiding in various ways for many years, but I find yarns can look deceptively fine, or thick, in videos, so I often ask. Embroidery floss always looks nice in the finished braid because of the slight gloss it has.

      Thank you for the question, the research and development of this project was funded through Arts Council Englands project grants. So you could say funded by the public. With every lottery ticket purchased in the UK, a small percentage is given to the arts and other culturally funded bodies to support artists like myself with ambitious projects.

    Wear hearing protection with metal on metal, those sharp taps might not sound loud but over time, well. I've always worn hearing protection my whole life and I can't sleep at night due to tinnitus - having a jet plane landing in your ears 24/7 makes you want to put a shotgun in your mouth. Wear as much hearing protection as you can get, and as good as you can afford - and then use ear plugs inside them to boot or you'll end up like me!

    This is super cool on film, can't wait to see what you do on your next project based around slavery. This sculpture very much reminds me of the statue of liberty. Maybe focusing especially on the liberation of the slaves especially in Jamaica who where quoted by British generals to "rather die than be slaves" and their efforts later lead to Britain withdrawing from the Atlantic slave trade all together . Encapsulating that inner power to escape from their struggle to gain self liberation would be something amazing to see in a sculpture. The duality of man is something that comes to mind, a burning mental parallel one day to come to the conclusion, liberty or death . I can't wait to see what you create in this project since you did such an amazing job with Pilgrim Woman. I really can't wait.

      Thank you so much Christian for taking the time to both watch the film and to send me a message, I’m so pleased to hear your reaction. Yes, my next project will tackle another complex part of our shared history and look at working class women and the enslaved female workforce taken from their home lands and made to work the cotton fields. It’s a story very much woven into my own history as many of my female ancestors died in the industrial cotton mills of the Midlands.

    • @rachelcartersculpture874
      @rachelcartersculpture874 3 года назад

      Hi Carol, I’m sorry to hear that you feel my representation of a Pilgrim Woman is not accurate. The project looks at the Mayflower families before they left England for the Netherlands in 1607, the Separatists as they were then refered as, fled the Midlands where the planned sculpture now sits. After a period of time in the Netherlands they fled again, this time on the Mayflower in 1620 and are now referred to as Pilgrims. To try and get authentic working class clothing we used a number of sources, from paintings of that time such as Bruegel the Elder's depiction of women working the field wearing their shift and kirtle to the Tudor Tailor which researches and recreates authentic clothing from that period. Although my project looks at the period before the Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic ocean and settled in Plymouth,MA, the clothing they took with them would have to last a long time and perhaps they would look a little more ragged and worn after the hard winters they encountered during the first few years of life in the New World. Please do get in touch with any more questions, Kind Regards Rachel Carter
