This video covers the making of a two-piece toadstool. I included a condensed version of the throwing of the stem which was covered in a previous video. Each piece is made with equal amounts of clay. The base is white stoneware and the caps are porcelain.

Toadstool parts, stems & caps, are made using equal amounts of clay. The bases, shown here, are thrown a bit thick as they will be fired on their side and they'll be lovingoutdoors; subject to weather and dogs running through the garden beds etc. I suggest pounding a long piece of metal like rebar into the ground when installing these bases in the garden... The rebar serves to keep the base upr...

Recycling Clay using a Bluebird Mixer in the Barn
Просмотров 2721 день назад
Recycling clay is surprisingly easy thanks to my friend Chris Alexiades who donated this mixer to the cause here in Woodbridge Connecticut. The best things about this mixer are that it is stainless steel and dumps. A mix of 2-5 gallon buckets and one full bucket of throwing water renders throwable clay. A couple weeks of aging is even better. This is a mix of porcelain and stoneware.

    Thanks for this - I am looking into a bluebird myself and wondering if this is the larger or smaller version, and if you're overall happy with the results. I've got a small space a lot of reclaim Thanks

      Hi Jordan, just found you in IG. Nice work! It's the larger one, #150 clay capacity. That's spot on as a 5 gallon bucket is about #50....two dry buckets and one using throwing water....fine particles in the water make for throwable clay right away. I only figured this out in June, thanks to help from my friend and fellow potter Jen Adamson. This machine takes the "Ugh" out of reclaiming for sure. Totally reach out anytime, thanks for reaching out. Decided to start capturing daily activities in the calssroom and wondering if you have any advice about video quality or anything? happy holidays, Trev

      @@trevoryoungberg Thank you, much appreciated! I have a small Shimpo pug, which is great but the hard part is getting any reclaim to the right consistency before putting through the machine and this seems like a good solution. Seems silly to spend thousands on a new machine when you can get new clay, but reclaim never goes away on its own! I've looked into horizontal dough mixers but I doubt it would have enough power. Anyway, the video quality is great, enough explanation about the process without using any words or dialog. Well done.

    Thank you very much for the demonstration. I grew up through my teen years on the Hopi Reservation. I learned about pottery from my adopted Ami family. My parents and i would go out and find clay and refine it for my grandmother and aunts. I miss those rimes. I am 52 now, and the home i found in Brooktrails ca has many springs. There is ancient blue clay i am planning on trying to refine and use.

      Wow Chris, amazing to hear that you have experienced pottery in that way! I'm gradually getting into using local clays and materials like feldspars and rocks. So cool. I'd love to hear more about your past experience....how did the clays look when fired? What type of kiln? The blue clay sounds amazing! I'd trade you a pot for a pound or two of the blue clay....I've never heard of blue clay. Thank you for reaching out, Trev

      Hello, the firebox mixture was a blend of cement, recycle slip (porcelain and fireclay) and sand. 1:8:1. There's not a ton of heat down there and it's held up nicely ;) Thank you for reaching out, I'm happy to share any other details about the build if you like. I never use my clay/ceramic bird baths in the winter. The constant freezing at night and thawing during daylight will cause ceramic bird baths to disintegrate much sooner than they should. I use a heated, white, plastic bird birdbath in the winter but I don't fill it up too high because the water on the lip will freeze. I thought the heater had stopped working until realized I was filling it too high. But I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and people in warmer climates probably don't have to worry about this. I try and look for white bird baths. That makes it much easier to tell if the water is dirty. I keep a tightly wound strainer hung-up near the bird bath and use that to clean very minute debris and birdcrap out of the birdbath between changes of the water. I change the water at least once a day. Some species of birds will crap in the water on a regular basis.

The blade held up that day. Mill's are so awesome, can't tell you for sure how many projects it has provided material for ....projects I'd never have done without the mill...sheds, furniture, fencing...so cool. There are other milling videos on my RUclips that show the mill...most recently the wood-fired pottery kiln. I'd love to hear what you think. Take care bro, Trev

  • @trevoryoungberg
    @trevoryoungberg 8 лет назад

    Hi Chris, Thank you, I use a fork to score the adjoining sections (concave meets convex lip). No slip as the pieces are soft. Just make sure to compress the clay during initiall pull through the seam. Also, keeping top section slightly tapered from base to lip helps......especially when the top/second section flares slightly when thrown when inverted for placement on section #1....the taper of the sections align to form a monolithic two section cylinder. Have fun making your planters and I'd love to see your work and continue corresponding! Happy throwing, Trevor

  • @chrisamar5137
    @chrisamar5137 8 лет назад

    Trevor, wonderful piece. My question, when you connect the two pieces, do you score and use slip, or not? I've got a friend who wants me to make 4 similar planters for her. I'm not sure if I should use your method or make them using extruded sections?
