    My take away is to use 600 ohm for dipoles, is that correct? Is the main benefit of ladder vs coax the ability to run long distance from antenna to shack? How does your 80 meter loop work? How high in the air is it? Thanks for the video.

    • @HamShackReviews
      @HamShackReviews 14 дней назад

      I stayed with 450 ohm simply because I had it, and I am very satisfied with my loop's performance. All 4 corners are roughly 35' in the air, That is low for 80 meters but it still works surprisingly well, even better on higher bands. The ladder line can handle higher SWR over coax and when put right to the tuner or on a balun close to tuner the loss is minor compared to a run of coax with higher SWR.

I have it mounted on 10 foot piece of chain link fence top rail. I have a home made 4:1 at the feed point. It is resonant on 20m, and I can tune it from 40-10. Works best on 20-up. I am very happy with it, it works great on 20m.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. My favorite antenna is a 80 Meter full wave horizontal loop antenna fed with 450 Ohm Ladder line. At the rig end, the ladder line gives into a 4:1 Balun and then into a tuner via short coax jumper cable. Tunes all bands,super quiet receive and fantastic DX performance on higher frequency bands....just be sure to unplug the antenna from the radios when actually not in use. Hey Vince,a few questions about the Delta loop. Since I want vertical your number 6 configuration for 20 meters. Is the quarter wave stub length 70.7 divided 4? My balun will be 4:1 current balun and I want to run 450 ohm window line from the antenna to the balun and coax short run. Is this a good configuration? The 450 ohm line will be perpendicular to the elements. Fed at the top right side for vertical

    • @HamShackReviews
      @HamShackReviews 3 месяца назад

      I am not sure of the math without figuring it, it would be dived by 3 since the delta loop has three sides. Leave the wire a little long because it is easier to shorten it than to add to it. I put the flat side in the air and fed mine at the bottom point directly directly with the balun(2.5:1 and no ladder line). However, my square loop was fed with ladder line down to the balun. It created two adjustments with wire length and ladder line length. Both work great.

      @@HamShackReviews wouldn't the window line make it more multi band and mechanically not so heavy On the wire at the .25 wavelength location? Thanks for your help. I put the flat on top because of my yard location.

      Vince, your Delta loop antenna drawing #6 where do I put the window line for vertical polarization ?That is the only configuration because of space. So the flat top is #6 drawing. The loop is up and down not horizontal with ground. Thanks for all of your ideas. I will let you know what happens. I like the balun design equipment,but I can't afford right now. Not all vertical antennas essentially need ground-radials, of course. I like the T2LT "flowerpot" vertical dipole, for this reason. Install it at a reasonable height, and I think ground-losses will be tolerable; I suggest mount it at least a half-wave above ground at the bottom-end.

    • @HamShackReviews
      @HamShackReviews 3 месяца назад

      Installed at a reasonable height no longer makes it a ground mounted vertical so I can see your point, Mounting it at least a half way length above the ground removes the need for ground radials. However, short radials like the Gap Titan antennas have would be beneficial.

    You must reconcile with many of your explanations because they are not correct. Especially what you said about current flowing on the outside of the outer shield whenever a current flows on the centre conductor is absolutely wrong. Infact current flows on the inner surface of the shield. CMC (common mode current) tends to flow on the outside of the outer shield only when the coaxial cable from the feed point is not brought vertically downwards but at an angle so that it lies parallel to one of the arms of the dipole. Please read well and do videos. Wish you good luck. De VU2RZA

    • @HamShackReviews
      @HamShackReviews 3 месяца назад

      Current or signal flows on the center conductor, I was talking about common mode current that flows on the ground which is considered the outside of the coax. I will check the video again.

    • @subramanianr7206
      @subramanianr7206 3 месяца назад

      @HamShackReviews thanks for the prompt reply 👍 Yes, I will appreciate if you can go through the video again, titled "how coax works" A coaxial cable, in effect, has 3 conductors. 1. Outer surface of the inner conductor. 2. Inner surface of the outer conductor. 3. Outer surface of the outer conductor. When you connect one end of the coaxial cable to a voltage (power) source (transmitter) and a load (antenna) to the other end, current flows on the outer surface of the inner conductor towards the load and the return current flows on the inner surface of the outer conductor towards the source; this is called the differential mode current. This current is, at any given instant and any given point along the cable is of equal magnitude but of opposite polarity. None of the current flows on the outer surface of the outer conductor. What we want is only the differential mode current and no CMC, vertical current, longitudinal current, or simply antenna current. (Yes, the CMC has these many titles!) If a dipole (a flat top or inverted V dipole) is installed in free space (meaning no nearby objects and the feed point is at least half lambda high above the ground) and the coaxial cable is brought vertically down at least quarter lambda long before you may want to deviate the course to be taken to the shack, there is no need for a CMC choke. But then, a CMC choke, one at the feed point to the dipole, and another at the point of the cable entering the shack is preferred. This arrangement will take care of any RF trash, (EMI) radiated from a nearby strong source (like a BC radio station or one of your own another antenna) OK, let me stop here. De VU2RZA

    A few raised ground-plane radials typically has less loss than burying miles of wire in the dirt. Many higher frequency antennas are/were elevated ground-planes; low loss. Even an HF vertical may benefit from an elevated installation, with a few elevated ground radials. Especially if they're laid-out in the direction you want to reach. An End Fed Half-Wave is high impedance at the feed point, and can use a simple ground stake or even a very short counterpoise. A half-wave vertical (fed in the middle, elevated feed point) doesn't need a ground plane. If you're (very) near the ocean, then you likely won't need much wire. In summary, there are other options than burying miles of wire in the dirt.

    • @HamShackReviews

      Thank you for the other options, very good information. This video was talking about ground mounted verticals, when first installed mine did not have a radial system. When I added one the addition made a very noticeable improvement.

    Great Explanation! I use the 600-ohm version of the ladder line and do not twist the wire to a height of about 70 feet without issue. Keep the videos coming.

    the LCWO "Convert to text" is the one of the best way to practice. I suggest use the Program "Just learn Morse Code" as this program can do the same thing, and has more very helpful LEARNING features. TIP After pasting text to the box, edit the text. take out all punctuation marks except the PERIOD and COMMA, edit all words that over 7 characters long, and edit out un-common words. there is a very good reason for ths.. do not be concern with gramma or if the sentences make sense. make several MP3 files and load them onto your cell phone to practice when you have free time, peace and quite time. There are so many "Learn CW" videos on YT, my head would spin if I was just learning CW.

    Thanks, that helped. Wondering however if you have found a workaround to keep the 6 digit Grid Square. Now it only records the 4 digit. The FT* Digital Club requires 6 digit Squares. I now have 3000 contacts with 4 digit grid squares. Thanks!

      No, but to be honest. I was not looking for one.

    It depends on ground moisture content, soil composition and if there are metal structures near by, cirrect?

      Yes, ground moisture content and soil composition are important but radials can make up the difference if one or two of these are insufficient. Metal objects are almost always a problem.

    Agreed on the BAL issue. It does more good to have one in the signal path than the small amount of power lost. Good explanation and diagram.

    I like this “cheatsheet!” I used your notes to refresh my own. I have also told my Ham friends about your webpage and YT channel.

      Well HF, VHF, and UHF are frequency ranges in analog. C4FM in a digital mode mode that is commonly used on VHF and UHF. Maybe this will be a good video idea, Thank you
