EDDIE VAN HALEN MINI-DOCUMENTARY: The Early Guitars In His Own Words | The Journey to Frankenstein
Edward Van Halen received his first guitar, a $40 Teisco Del Rey, in 1967 at age 12.
Over the next 10 years he would go on a journey, learning more and more about what he wanted and needed from a guitar.
After working his way through Les Pauls, Stratocasters and Destroyers, the culmination of that search for the perfect instrument was the creation of something all his own - the immortal Frankenstein guitar.
It recently placed number 3 in Billboard's list of the most iconic guitars of all time: www.billboard.com/lists/best-guitars-list-instruments/

Long live King Edward
I can't even get through the first 5 minutes without crying., I miss you so much Eddie. Thank you for everything!!! <3
I know how you feel buddy. I'm sorry to hear it tears you up like that, but in a way, I'll take it as a compliment that the video could provoke an emotional reaction ❤️🎸
great documentary, perfectly put together, i actually caught goose bumps, this guy was a genius, like a mozart of the guitar, an innovator with immense technicity and creativity
Thanks a lot for taking the time write this awesome comment! He really was a genius. In Europe where I live, people aren't even aware of the guy anywhere near enough, but to me, he'll always be the greatest rock n roll guitarist that ever lived. And such a brilliant songwriter and composer too. Thanks again, and look out for more VH/EVH related stuff coming on the channel soon!
Amazing work. Thank you.
Thanks for saying buddy. Really glad to hear and appreciate the comment. Look out for more VH/EVH related stuff coming soon!
Outstanding work putting this together (video & sound/music). VERY creative. I’ve seen it numerous times and enjoy it every time.
@@Viper_555 I really appreciate this, thank you 😊 It took a bit of work, but it was a labour of love. Totally worth it when it means something to people too. I'm working at the moment on a new episode about the debut and Eruption, but progress has been very slow because of both the holidays and because I keep getting more day job work than expected. Hopefully later this month though 👍🏻
What a great documentary about the King of 6 strings and 10 fingers. The GOAT
@@oengland28 Thanks for saying! I only wish I could do the King justice, but I've tried my best. Hopefully more on the way soon 🤘🏻
He did not deserve to go before Keith Richards.
No, perhaps not. But Eddie was made of strong stuff. He put his body through an incredible amount for over 40 years and could've died several times over.
I didn’t realize how musically intelligent Eddie Van Helen was until I saw this interview documentary about him. It was a great documentary. It was very impressive. Like who knew?!
@@IntelligentQuotient-s6g Thank you very much for saying. I mean, people obviously know about his playing, but his ability to innovate in guitar design and building is very underrated in the wider world. Obviously his playing and dexterity is amazing, but Ed's tone was his voice and his guitars were his vocal chords. He took it as seriously as anyone ever has.
We love you Eddie Van Halen ❤
You were a lot of my life learning what life was back then. Since you left us, there's been a huge hole in music. And now that you're gone, there always will be. I miss you, Eddie.
Where is Kramer in this ?
@@hammerstonerobert The video is deliberately titled and described as the EARLY guitars and the journey to FRANKENSTEIN. That means it's his guitars covering up to 1977. I went further to 1979 just to included the red paint job on Frankenstein, but it basically just covers the guitars up to the debut album, and I've been pretty clear with that.
Great job, thanks so much for putting this together!
@@tiesb1212 My pleasure when people enjoy it 😊 Thanks a lot for saying so - hopefully a new episode before long about "Eruption" and the debut album. Just been very slow work on it cos of day-job and life stuff.
@@iconsremembered Can imagine it takes a lot of time. Definitely looking forward to it! Keep up the good work!
To the Dutch Indonesian (Indo) Community in The Netherlands and probably all around the world these brothers are legends. Just like The Tielman Brothers (R.I.P.) who were the first people to play Rock&Roll in The Netherlands. Take a listen if you love early Rock&Roll.
Thanks for the comment 👍🏻 Do you know if there is any interest in the brothers/band in Indonesia, given their heritage?
@iconsremembered Yep if you look at some of the comments under Tielman brothers songs. Most of them are Indonesians. They are super proud of people with indonesian heritage (take a look at their football team).
Id like to say that your title should include composer. A musician plays music. A composer writes music.
He was definitely a composer too, no doubt about it. His technical skills would mean a lot less if the songs and music weren't brilliant. But I also have to think about the title being a little bit snappy, so only went for "Musician".
Yeah Ed was such a musical genius. His music lives on forever
All true, but not just his music - his innovation, his influence, his pure joy for playing. In many different ways, there will never be another Edward Van Halen.
Wow this was a really cool look into the thought process and engineering that went behind creating one of the most iconic guitars and guitar sounds in the history of music. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 This is the most custom you can ever get. ❤❤❤
Wonderful short doc! Eddie you rule up there bud!
Thank you for saying and glad you enjoyed it 😊 I'm working at the moment on one about the debut album and Eruption - I thought it would be done by now, but life keeps getting in the way! Probably out in January.
@iconsremembered I'll watch it as soon as it drops! Keep up the good work!
@dustyweber7189 Thanks buddy!
FANTATIC VIDIO INCRÍVEL ❤ LOVE YOU

Still miss him
I know what you mean. But as long as they music is here, then he's still here in a way... Not that it's much consolation.
EDDIE VAN HALEN L JUST LOVE THIS ENTIRE VIDIO THANK YOU SAUDADE ETERNA VAI EN PAZ ENCONTRAR SUA PAZ LOVE YOU ❤😂❤😂
Thank you for saying - much appreciated 😊
I just found this channel and I flipping love it!!!!! It’s awesome to hear my guitar heroes talk about their stories of their gear and music. I learned so much from listening, especially EVH, you can just hear the passion in his voice when he speaks about how he went about making his guitars and trying all kinds of different things to get what he wanted from them. Thank you!!!!!
Thanks a lot for such a great comment, and you're very welcome - I'm glad to hear. I'm working on more EVH stuff now, focused on the debut album and Eruption. But it's taking longer than expected 😬
So I would imagine Eddie and Randy rhoads are having a lot of fun up there and having you bet Randy rhoads and Eddie Van Halen I hope you guys are having fun
Eddie Van Halen you are much missed thank you very much for the music you made for us I very much appreciate you I miss you and you are much missed by a lot of people thank you again for your beautiful music you made and a beautiful person that you were and are thank you again Eddie
To be honest there should be proper hollywood film approved by Alex and wolfgang that would be amazing, telling the story about the most important band that changed music forever. Alex and Wolfgang should make sure the story is told right.
@@BonJovi1987Fan I do think Alex is thinking about a biopic, a la Bohemian Rhapsody, but personally I think their story would be far better told as an authorised documentary. Music biopics always run the risk of being false and full of inaccuracies. Their story is simply too compelling to not be told on the screen in some form though.

There's a vid here on YT, of guys talking about that original VH1 album in the studio where it was recorded. And the ORIGINAL GUYS are still there! Talking about the mics they used and which studio it was recorded in, when one of the guys says "you know... I think we still have the receipts from that recording." And sure enough, they go back in the vaults and pull the records ... ... and "Eruption" ... was recorded for right around $800. One of, if not **THE** most important pieces of rock and roll guitar and it was done for less than a grand. It's a great video, I highly recommend it. :)
@@TheNudeBrewer Yeah some of the Sunset Sound videos are great. I've actually been watching some lately as I want to do a new video about the debut album and Eruption.
Beautiful Story RIP King Eddie 🎸

@@johnhaydock1577 Thank you for saying and glad to hear 😊 I'm working on some more now, which will cover the period from 1978-94, but progress is a little slower than I'd like... Hopefully will have something ready before too long.
@iconsremembered That's great I'll be tuning in to that one for sure. Great stuff. 😀
This documentary is EXCEPTIONAL! Amazing, I can’t believe the amount of archival material they have.
Thanks a lot for saying! I've tried to make the most of what's out there, but new things appear all the time, so this is already missing things that would've gone in, had they been available at the time. Hopefully some more episodes coming before too long 🤞🏻
Great video!! There’s pics of Ed when he was young that I’ve never seen before.
Thanks a lot for the compliments 😊 Which photos did you mean? A lot of them have still been floating around for a while in one form or another, but I've tried to use everything that I could.
@ The pics where Ed seems very young playing guitar. I’ve never seen those before.
@@duckydrummer6331 I wish I could say that I had access to never before seen material, but the one of him with his mother and first guitar came from Rolling Stone back in the 90s. And the ones of him with the Univox have been around for at least a few years courtesy of the band's old friend and roadie Tom Broderick. But on the other hand I did have some interview audio no one has heard before 😊
When i first met him back in 2004, i'd felt like i went to heaven. I'd met my match. There is no musiscian, no actor, no one famous i would want to meet more.... We spent 4 years together,on and off , until he met Janie. We wer TOO similar. Our birthdays 4 days apart. My first impressiin of Ed was it felt i'd known him forever. The good things about Ed were he was FUN, AMUSING, WISE, ENTERTAINING, ATTRACTIVE, BRILLIANT, SWEET, FUNNY, ENDEARING,GENTLE AND A LOVE FOR ANIMALS. The bad.... Compulsive, egotistical, unreliable, difficult, JADED, inconsistent, alcoholic, drug addict. I loved the guy. He hated assholes but he surely could be one himself. I wouldn't move in with him to his marital home. No way. LOL. RIP ED.....
Interesting to hear all that, thank you. Is it too much to ask who you are in real life (no problem if that's private)? That whole period is murky in terms of where Ed was at.
@@iconsrememberedI moved to LA ( Holmby Hills) in 1999, where I stayed through 2019. I met an international business man in 2002 who was crown jeweler to the queen and he also was behind the organization of rock concerts and networking with famous people. I was starting my own antiaging tea company and met this man up in Topanga, when he invited me into his life. I started a London Tea Co for him and was working for him as personal assistant. He introduced me to Ed in Santa Monica at a dinner party he arranged. I met Costner that same night. I worked for this man for 10 years. I knew Ed for about 4, during his WORST years. He was a mess.
@pinkaholic09 Thanks for the information. I'm taking a guess this might have been Stephen Webster?
@@iconsrememberedInteresting, my second comment has disappeared here... this has been happening to me on YT. Looks like you saw it though. No, he is Robert Procop. Owns Jewels Of Beverly Hills and at that time was Crown Jeweler To England Queen. One of his business partners being the billionaire Ronald Berkle, who he purchased his Santa Monica oceanfront estate from.
Frankenstein? It's Frankenstrat
@@hamhead2765 I don't think I've ever heard Ed refer to it himself as Frankenstrat, but he has (including in this video) referred to it as Frankenstein a couple of times. A recent quote from Wolfgang Van Halen, who now owns it: “Officially, on the case, it says Frankenstein, but people call it whatever they want."
@iconsremembered He didn't refer to himself as frankenstrat. That's what his red/white and black striped guitar was referred to as because it was built by EVH with all kinds of different parts from fender and Gibson guitars.
@@hamhead2765 Not sure what you mean buddy. I've never heard Ed once call the guitar 'Frankenstrat'. He hasn't really called it 'Frankenstein' either, but he does mention that title at the end of this video. And we know from Wolfgang Van Halen that the guitar's case had 'Frankenstein' printed on it. So I'd say that makes it conclusive enough that 'Frankenstein' is at least more correct than 'Frankenstrat'.

Amazing Van Halen History... Miss this band. Cut the Personal Crap and bring the SOUND BACK!!!
@@colemant6845 Thanks a lot for saying! Yes I wish they could get over things myself, but I think the ship has sailed unfortunately. No matter though, the music itself lives on. Hopefully more episodes coming soon!
@@iconsremembered I'm pretty sure it is Alex who is the problem... He was always the Weird Duck of the family. Drummers are everywhere... Sammy/Wolfgang etc would reform in a minute.
@@colemant6845 I do think Alex is a factor, but honestly, I think it's all of them have problems. Dave didn't want to turn things into an overt tribute to Eddie. Wolf wants to focus on his own music, and I think he's done all he's going to do with Hot for Teacher and On Fire last year, as well as the Behind the Music special. Alex has huge problems physically, hates Sam, and has high standards for how he would want to do any tribute. Hagar to me is probably the only one who would jump at a reunion under most circumstances. Sadly, I just can't see anything happening involving Dave, Alex or Wolf.
@@iconsremembered Interesting.... You would think a group that USED to be on top of the Rock World and now... struggling to stay relevant would JUMP at the opportunity to experience what Journey/Stones/Queen/BonJovi are experiencing in renewed popularity. Strange people indeed.
I feel very blessed and lucky to watch and hear and witness the greatest guitarist and rock band of my generation
