After hundreds of attempts, you start to recognise patterns and develop a sense for where the most likely spawns are. Even so, most of the time you go to a place you think fits the map and she's not there. This was a fairly lucky run.

Wait, but there was literally nothing on the map lol. It was just open water. Did the spot you search just happen to be a common spawn?

I got a first-map Panama-vicinity hideout spawn, once. The run would have been a sub-12 if I'd had enough crew.

Lost a whole minute trying to run from that second English ship. Other than that, it was pretty good! I was on pace for either sub-16 or sub-15 a couple hours before I got this one, but lost it. I got an amazing hideout map that had the hideout itself and a shoreline landmark ending in "rock". I land at one, run around landmarks for over four minutes, and then go back to my ship, where I find another landmark ending in "rock" just a stone's throw away. Sure enough, the second one was the right one and I found the hideout within seconds of landing. I finished the run and got a 20:35. Disgusting.

I'm fine with that change, so long as my no loading run becomes my new best for any%.

Dude, give beating it a try! I swear I'll be running it more as soon as I have time on my hands again. But there's nothing to say you can't try to beat my score. Livesplit and OBS are really easy to use. If you go to speedrun.com and look up the game you can see there are other categories, too- like "be the #1 pirate as fast as possible", for example. I haven't even attempted that yet. Set the baseline!

Your tactic of using the pinnace and boarding everyone, while keeping the galleon to carry food and crew, is awesome.

I like it too :P If you watch my first run of this game it's atrocious- I spend most of my time trying to get to the rank I need to dance with beautiful daughters. I come across TWO ships-of-the-line in that run. It's come a long way. Shame it's so RNG-based. I want to have time to run Wipe Out Spain, which is far less so.

Well, the traditional end split of video games is at the defeat of the main boss, regardless of whether the game "ends" at that point or not. This is just something that's generally true of all speedruns, since there is rarely any reason to continue timing after that (there's no "skill" in sailing to the nearest port and immediately retiring). Other categories of the game do finish on the end screen, but the text box for beating Montalban is such a good trigger for the end split that for any% I liked it best. The point of making it Adventurer difficulty at least is the maps- I figured it was only fair to play on the difficulty where maps are actually found in sets of four. I consider the difficulties under that to be "very easy" and "my first video game" modes. Since the higher ones all share the four-piece map, I figure they should be the only ones allowed- if someone finds an advantage in playing on Swashbuckler, more power to them, but at least the actual mechanics are the same. Thanks for the kind comment anyway! I honestly do plan to run more; I only stopped because my laptop had to be repaired and I didn't have Steam for a while. Hopefully different categories as well!

+dan4461 Dude, I've never been sunk by him in my Mail Runner before, let alone like four times. For my first 100 runs, he let me board him. Run 101? Of course that's when he decides on a new tactic ;P

+GuNCh Bandit I didn't, really. I just guessed based on where the hideout is likely to spawn. I could see a tiny bit of ocean on the right side, and decided to give it a shot and hope I got lucky, which I did. They are much more likely to spawn near one of those shoreline landmarks, so I just landed at the first one I saw and happened to run into the hideout. It's just as likely that I'd have found nothing, and kept finding nothing everywhere I landed, over and over until I gave up and reset.

+Hydro Cannons On the speedrun.com page for this game (www.speedrun.com/Sid_Meiers_Pirates) you can see all the categories I plan to run at some point in the future. Once I get a good run (sub 35 minutes) in Any% I plan to move on to Top Pirate, and then probably Wipe Out Spain. 100% (126 Fame) probably won't be coming for a while, as it's gonna be months before I can spend more than a couple hours every few days on speedrunning, and I think a 126 Fame run might take 4 or 5 hours to complete. So no, a 100% (126 Fame) run won't be coming soon, but at some point, yes. To be honest I hope someone else does it first. Having a time to beat will actually make me want to go at it :P
