Vinyl Junky's review of the Degritter ultrasonic record cleaning machine
Vinyl Junky's review of the Degritter ultrasonic RCM. I've tried to do a before/after test using Elliot Smith's "Either/Or". Apologies for the sound quality and amateur production, I did this on my phone. Feel free to ask any questions in the comment section below.
This review is my personal view and does not reflect the views of Degritter, nor is it endorsed by Degritter. All equipment used in the review was purchased by me and not sponsored by Degritter, nor did I receive any paid promotion for this review.

    Today this costs £2450. Let's have a blind comparison between this and a £140 ultrasonic cleaner. I don't think you will hear any difference and with the money saved you could buy a fabulous turntable.

      I'm not going to say the degritter is the best but one of the issues with the ultrasonic cleaners that are just adapted to records like you can find for a couple hundred on Amazon is that they emit extremely high frequencies. People have noticed hearing loss attributed to them. And if you read the instructions they will state that you should stay X feet way or in a different room when it is in use. Which is why in commercial setting ultrasonic cleaners are in rooms by themselves and people wear ear protection when in the vicinity. Or when you go to a jewelry store to get something cleaned the ultrasonic cleaner they have will be in a soundproofed/dampened box. Personally I've never seen any definitive proof that a ultrasonic is better then a good vac cleaner. edit: also ultra sonic cleaning has been studied on glass and has shown to wear down glass. So I'm pretty sure it isn't doing a soft vinyl record any favors in the long term.

    The Degritter manual FAQ states this about shellac and lacquer-acetate records: “We have not conclusively tested cleaning shellac or lacquer-acetate records with Degritter. If you do clean one, then do so on your own responsibility”. Which seems odd… it’s really built for 12” LPs, but they have inserts that allow cleaning of 7” and 10” records. Does anyone know if its safe with such records?

    All the "particles" left on the surface after the first cleaning and drying, at 12:45, are they waterdrops? But there are still several "particles" left on the surface even after the second drying (14:00 on). Apropos water drops carried for full turns. Without label protection, this machine must cause fluid to occasionally stain the labels, particularly if a wetting agent is used (which it should for best cleaning). Just take a look here: ruclips.net/video/p9zWgWovJEs/видео.html. This can spell disaster for more expensive vintage records.

    I guess you must be talking about the temperatures of your cleaning water in Celcius rather than Farenheit, because water at anything below 32°F is frozen ice at atmospheric, (i.e. listening room), pressure! Also, you can't do any kind of real "sound quality" comparisons through a RUclips video because the sound is limited by the compression of RUclips itself, and definitely by the speakers that viewers who watch this are listening to it on, (which usually would be cheap computer speakers or even their cellphone speaker!), so, like in my case, I couldn't tell *any* difference between the "before" and "after" cleaning listening tests, because my cellphone speaker doesn't have high enough of resolution to actually *hear* any difference on *my* end, even though I know enough about vinyl to know that it definitely made a *large* improvement in the quality and cleanliness of the sound reproduced in the actual listening room the record is being played in! Also, why the hell would you EVER need the ability to do a "firmware/software update" on such a relatively simple, mostly mechanical device??!... It seems like if it was a truly well designed, engineered, and properly manufactured piece of equipment, then a machine like this should *always* do it's job perfectly and as intended, (with proper maintenance and cleaning of course), because it's NOT like this device has any *really* complicated and sophisticated "processing software" in it or anything like that! (Like your computer or surround sound processor/receiver or your "smart TV" does) That just seems like a totally un-necessary and useless "feature" of this device, just put there to increase the cost/price of the device for no real, useful reason! Lol!

    • @marcomaiulini6421
      @marcomaiulini6421 4 года назад

      hahaha, "software update"; you are right, it´s a joke. I have an ultrasonic cleaner and believe me it makes a difference, really big on old and used records, but it´s a 400 USD brand new machine! This one is full of snake oil!

    30 minutes to *prepare* to listen to the (usually about 3 minute long) song!... Yeah, I guess this would be a great idea if you were preparing to record your vinyl LP to a CD or upload the music from it to your computer, etc., just so you could get the absolute best sound quality off of the LP, but this is totally and ridiculously obsessive for just casual vinyl listening or for background music enjoyment, etc.!... You have to ask yourself what your ultimate "bottom-line" priorities are; time-wise, (time invested), music quality, money invested, etc... How much of a "Vinyl Junkie" are you? Lol!

    • @QoraxAudio
      @QoraxAudio 4 года назад

      That's because no one is taking a serious effort to make any developments in vinyl playback, due to all the conservatives. I mean, they could've made vinyl of a modern non-static polymer since the late 90s... or ditch all the belt drive designs for modern direct drive turntables... same goes for MC vs MM cartridges, since modern permanent magnets are significantly better/stronger nowadays.

    • @mcpeko
      @mcpeko 4 года назад

      @@QoraxAudio Interesting points. There is supposedly a new vinyl format called HD Vinyl. But I haven't seen it anywhere IRL. I also prefer direct drive, but some of the very expensive hi-fi turntables are still belt drive. I don't have a strong preference on moving magnet vs coil yet. Will read up on that.

    • @QoraxAudio
      @QoraxAudio 4 года назад

      @@mcpeko HD vinyl is just the perfection of a production process, but not the perfection of the product itself. It's basically the successor of DMM, using a laser to etch the stamper instead of carving out a copper master disc. In the end it's still the same product of the same material, but made with higher precision. However, the disadvantage of HD vinyl in its present form, is that it can't keep analogue recordings analogue; a high resolution digital audio file as a source is a necessity, in contrast to DMM where the lathe can be fed an analogue signal that has been processed for DMM in a fully analogue way. About MC vs. MM/MI cartridges: the main concern is the moving mass, where the moving coil is lighter than the moving magnet or moving iron; at least, that's how it used to be, when magnets where weak and needed to be fairly big to do the job properly. Nowadays (read: early 90s) moving magnets have become so strong, that they can even produce signals up to 10 or 12mV. The additional moving mass on old moving magnet cartridges meant that inertia (takes time to bring mass into motion) was an issue, this dampens the high frequency response. Nowadays most MM cartridges use better magnets, but they stopped developing further in the 90s when they came with neodymium as a replacement of the alnico magnets that were introduced back in the 30s. But there haven't been any true development ever since, only minor changes to make things a bit more perfectly working.

    This is a helpful video on many fronts. I have a vacuum arm cleaning machine very similar to yours and am thinking of also acquiring an ultrasonic machine as well/instead of. You haven't commented on (1) Whether this is better than your Loricraft vacuum machine or (2) Is there any benefit in using both of the machines to clean a record and if so, in what order.

    • @advanirahul
      @advanirahul 5 лет назад

      skidco1 “Better” is a relative term. In terms of end result (sonically as well as visually), I feel there is little difference between the two. Both have their pros and cons - the the arm on the Loricraft touches the surface of the record, so there’s chances of scratches, and you also have to use a brush to get the fluid into the grooves (Degritter is an ultrasonic cleaner, so no such problem). However, the Degritter has a limited life on the ultrasonic amplifiers (2000 cycles), while the Loricraft will probably be working 50 years from now (it’s basically just a vacuum pump and motor). The Degritter is much more compact (the Loricraft is at least 2.5x the size). I think the decision to switch would come down to (1) cost and (2) ease of use. The Degritter is around 50% the price of the Loricraft where I live (Singapore). You can also clean and dry both sides of a record in as little as 6 minutes in the Degritter, without monitoring it. The Loricraft would take twice as long, and you need to be there to flip the record and scrub etc. I don’t see any benefit to using both the machines to clean a record. You could, theoretically, but I would think that any benefit would be negligible, and could be done easily by just getting an additional tank for the Degritter for a separate rinse cycle if needed. I’m keeping the Loricraft as a backup mainly, since I’ve already invested in it.

    • @skidco1
      @skidco1 5 лет назад

      @@advanirahul Thanks for your full reply. What happens when the ultrasonic amplifiers have expired after 2000 cycles? Are they DIY replaceable or is it necessary to buy a whole new machine again? For larger vinyl collections such as mine (5,000 LP's) this is an issue.

    • @advanirahul
      @advanirahul 5 лет назад

      skidco1 Degritter has indicated an easy DIY process to replace them, or the option to send the unit back to them to make the replacements. Definitely a concern as I have around 5000 LPs as well, which is why I’m also holding on to the Loricraft as a back up. However, even at 2000 cycles this works out to around 1 dollar per LP, which I think is fairly reasonable.
