Reading Lady Macbeth So You Don't Have To (I hated it)

Full spoilers Trying Ava Reid for a third time. I am so sorry. I wanted desperately to like Ava Reid's reimagining of Macbeth, but I just couldnt. From the hatred of the Scots, to the flat characters, to the dragon shifter (yes, dragon shifter), I just could not find anything I liked.

    There is a one star review on Goodreads that suggests some alternatives to this version of Lady Macbeth. I think the title is Queen Hereafter. I read that review to see if I would like it or not. And that reviewer had several issues with the way that feminism is portrayed, the way the Scots are portrayed, and other reasonable things. It’s good to know that the issues that made me avoid it are issues other people saw.

    I have no input on the posed prompts, but it sounds like we've had some similar reading trends lately! I did pretty much the exact same thing with the Green Bone Saga series -- I got a couple chapters into Jade War last November then put it down, but just picked it back up this month and am having an easier time with it! This is making me want to hop back into my Realm of the Elderling read next, though. I finished the Live Ship Traders trilogy (Kyle is still one of my least favorite book characters ever) early last year and just haven't started Tawny Man, but the itch is there haha. If you're not completely opposed to paying a little for the audiobooks, Chirp often has Robin Hobb books in their sales for $3-$5! I have also been waiting and waiting for Kushiel's Avatar to finally come available at my library, so I guess we'll just see if I get to finish that series before starting Tawny Man!

Also thank you for the push on Jade War! That's very encouraging 😊 Also also yesssss hopefully you get it soon! Appreciate your suffering. I’m with you on the first person story telling. In recent years, I’ve grown to not like first person because you get a whiny character. It could work but it’s mostly with the popular books with the same tropes and same paper thin plot. When I look for a new book to read, I purposely look at the first pages to see if it is in third person. To be fair, I did get a book that was dual pov that was very good but it was also a self published book that was in the urban fiction section.

    • @TiffReadsBooks
      @TiffReadsBooks 5 месяцев назад

      I have recently found older fantasy in first person to be an exception! Both the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb and Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey are in first person and I love those characters AND we still get full established side characters and a fleshed out world. I definitely think it's a stylistic thing and in some of the newer stuff it just feels lazy?

    Just coming accoss this now, but gosh, if the reviews and overall rating of this book on Goodreads as it stands today, yeah, it doesn't look like this book is um, being enjoyed by many people let's just say that. I remember coming across this book at Barnes & Nobel the other day, I checked at how much it costs and it was on sale and it looked like none of the copies were being sold. On top of that, I also don't think it's a good sign that the "special editions" are already being sold second hand for cheap. Finally, this leads to a bigger conversation but what on earth is going on with Orbit books??? I'm kinda a nerd with these things, but with tor let's say, I feel comfortable purchasing from tor because I know I'm in good hands. But with Orbit books coming out like with The Sun and The Void which doesn’t have a good rating, the Jasad Heir which I've heard is a colonizer romance or that it's extremely meh at best, like I dunno what's going on, but it's like WHERE ARE THE EDITORS??? Or at the very least, why are these the stories that are being selected to be published??? Of course, I'm over generalizing a tad bit as obviously not every book from orbit is like this, I've read some from them I've enjoyed. But it's just recently that I'm side eyeing these specific fantasy books that are interestingly enough massive books but are being sold in paperbacks instead of hardcovers, have really beautiful covers, but the actual stories themselves are, not very good??? I dunno, it just feels like a pattern to me and I'm wondering if this will keep happening but only time will tell I suppose.

    • @TiffReadsBooks
      @TiffReadsBooks 5 месяцев назад

      When I read the ARC the reviews were split about 50/50, I haven't looked since then so it is interesting to hear they are not looking good. I am also wondering about certain publishers as it does feel like editing is lacking in a lot of new releases. Though like you said, Tor seems to be most reliable for me. I can pick up pretty much anything from them and have an above 80% chance I'll like it.

    As a person that loves the library, kudos. Ballad of Black Tom is good. I keep seeing Chainsaw Man on the shelves so may need to pick up.,

    I am loving these analyses! So excited for when you get to HtN, its my favourite. If you're willing to have a spoiler section in these videos i think it might be super interesting to discuss (instances of) foreshadowing and setup/ payoff, things Muir excels at. It's why the locked tomb is practically made for rereading

      Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was 100% considering doing a separate video of foreshadowing because there is literally SO much that Tamsyn told us! Having someone else say they're excited makes me want to do it lol. I do agree it is designed for constant reconsumption haha
