I've been doing some Marvel Rivals studies as well, but with traditional paint! The cool thing about a lot of these images is that they are actually full 3D renders rather than hand painted. They start with a 3D model and then do a crazy amount of post processing with shaders and compositing! With "Toon Shaders" to put it generally, you can make a fully 3D image look like a cell shaded 2D image. It is fantastic and so fun to try and replicate! I've been having a lot of fun trying it myself 😄

Wait why would you not look up the moveset of the first character before redesigning her😭 wasn’t that the entire point of “you should be able to tell what the character does”? I love the redesign but you can’t tell she throws projectiles and has scouting capabilities

baz looks like an assassin? she looks like michael jackson from thriller but set in the movie the fifth element as a joke character kind of like how Ruby Rod was - just less appealing because honestly he did look kind of cool at times.

Honest take? I’ll get the obvious out of the way - your designs are DRAMATICALLY more appealing than the originals. But, the more you show me the originals, the more I find myself appreciating the unique style they were going for (I like when art tries something different, even if the execution fails). When you showed Baz (is that her name?) and asked what she did, the daggers told me she was an assassin-type character, and I was right. Your design completely changes her narrative, now I assume she has musical abilities. I also prefer the “Air Jordans”, they show more personality than these generic-Overwatch-style legs. Star Child is easily a huge improvement, you stayed faithful to the original design while adding visual interest. Your Don (name?) leans too hard into the islander theme imo, and the legs are a miss. The original looked like a dorky snowboarder, a guy you’d expect very little from until he pulls out some impressive skills. Now he just looks like Mauga’s little brother, and still doesn’t read that he’s a healer. I repeat, your designs are WAY more appealing, and you said these are only a first pass. The main problem with the originals is they tried to mix campy fashion with uncanny-valley realism. Campiness needs colorful cartoonishness to work. If you were the lead designer the game could have had a bit more success.

15:30 For Star Child, keep the big ass hammer, keep the overall design, but change the hammer to resemble more of a blacksmith's tool (either a big version of a blacksmith rounding hammer or just straight up put a stylized anvil on a pole), give him some kind of chest piece like a medieval chest plate, or keep the blacksmith aesthetic strong with overalls and welding goggles, and say that the character's purpose is an underworld blacksmith of sorts!

Great video! You should try drawing the anounced characters in this artstyle would be cool to see how they could look when they come to the game. For example deadpool or blade

these are by far the most original redesigns, and I love them, if these are in a game I can actually imagine what they do(following the new concepts ), I can see the fisher man slaping someone with a fish as one of his abilities (with a special alien/fish or something)

The problem with "reimagine" is that you didn't gave them more character but you did to in the lazy way. You say this person is a rocking so I gave them a guitar, or a blacksmith gets a hammer, fisherman gets a harpoon and fish. If you remove the items then you are back to....what do these characters do.

this is really awesome i feel like i just leveled up on my character design a bit i struggle with colors a bit i like the way rough sketches look myself i really wanna see what you think about like SNK art or do some kind of study on it like more so Shinkiro or Nona's art when they were around.

Just did a Rivals study myself, so it was really cool seeing how you approached it, great to find new youtube artist! regarding "thought lines" i think it might actually be referred to as "searching lines" in a professional context. im in no way a professional myself but i've heard it be called such in some proko videos

the only thing holding you back on this study is you blend too much Marvel rivals has a lot of sharp stone look and only 10-20% are the parts that are smooth

i am not a artist so i don't know to point out what is givin me that feeling but for some reason the original jeff look that have more life and energy to it and yours look more tired . It can be the region of the eyes of the shark but anyways both are incredible similar and copy as you said in the video its not the end goal , GOOD work!!
