12 Great Writing Tips No One Talks About (but they should)
What if I used a tablet to write down some sentences? Does that make sense?
Absolutely! And that is still handwriting
Interesting content, thank you. An unsolicited tip: with a dynamic microphone like the nice one you have, it needs to be much closer to you to get better quality sound.
Thanks and good tip
but I have arthritis... when I write for more than ten minutes my writing hand cramps so badly that I have to stop :(
This is just an observation - write in the way that works best for you :)
would it be possible to add timestamps/bookmarks? ty
Very happy to have discovered your channel. Subbed.
Thanks Emma!
Cool beard bro 👍
Thank you for a grand video, I only wish you would compare pen and paper with a computer, are there any cognitive differences, or any other differences at all?
Writing on a keyboard doesn't give the same cognitive benefits
@@publishingpushofficial my anecdotal non scientific personal experience is that a screen online, doesnt allow the brain to accumulate and process.
I write my entire book by hand, by chapters. Glue pieces of paper all over with additional notes and references 😂 I love writing ideas in pencil, and all my research too. Not clutch pencils, but good old fashioned wood. But black pen when I start the first draft. I then type out the novel, which becomes the second draft. No idea why I do this, it just feels right for the first draft to be hand written. I mean a book is never the first draft and the first chapter always changes 😂
Writing first drafts by hand is proving a really popular technique - we've come across so many more people using this method than we expected - love it!
Before deciding to use your services it would be helpful to have a general idea of your upfront costs. Pls advise how to proceed.

top advice,,thankyou and well done !re: Orwell’s opening line however, that was plain and uninteresting and doesn’t catch my interest whatsoever lol but that’s just me
Very welcome and glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video, please put chapters in the video based on the advices, so audience can quickly browse the video and understand its quality! Wish you the best with this new adventure of yours!
Thanks so much for your feedback! I am always in two minds about chapters. I decided not to on this one so that people watch it all ;)
@@publishingpushofficial I gotcha, tho I believe users become more loyal when their time is valued and kept in respect as max value. Chapters is just a way to show that to users, and they can understand at first sight just by chaps titles the quality of your content which is very high. So have no fear.
@@publishingpushofficialDo the chapters. Videos without chapters are beginning to fee amateur and unprofessional. Makes me think you don’t know your material well enough to structure it for ease of communication. I’m closing the window now without finishing the video. I’m not convinced that you know anything that I don’t. I see you have only 413 followers and 16 likes on this video. I’m not sure when this video was recommended to me. I normally do appreciate videos about books and authors. But this video has no chapters, no graphics-nothing. Moving on.
Such good advice. Thank you! Apart from the marathon middle, getting started on a new book is always the most difficult part. Too much looking up at the mountain! I feel like the hobbit who would rather stay in his comfy little house
Thanks Elena! So pleased to hear how much you enjoyed the video. Lots more writing and publishing advice to come.
Great advice! Marathon in the middle is the worst! Starting projects always has that same dopamine hit but once the newness wears off, you gotta keep at it. I like Stephen King’s analogy of “shoveling sh*t from a sitting position”. It really puts it in perspective. For me, I know that if I don’t keep showing up to the page, I might walk away and never finish it.
"shoveling sh*t from a sitting position" haha love this! I've not heard that before
But Arnold Samuelson doesn't even have a wiki page. There is one about Hemingway's boat.
You should create one for him!
so what about clever Dyslexics?
You made my day with this music video. Your followers have made the Face(book) hashtag #africanliteraturerevolution so successful. Continue encouraging my new hero, Donald Besong, to assist financially by reading his masterpiece, the fifteen-page "Bleeding Stubs." There is no better era loan Africa is financial efficacy through literature.
Writing can be so much more than just putting words on paper! This exercise really helped me unlock clarity and focus, thanks to Habit10x boosting my confidence in my own skills.
I’ve found this to be true, too. Sometimes you just gotta put words on the page, then scrap it later. Even the most out there ideas. When I was writing poetry, some of my best poems were about not having something to write about.
I agree completely - just got to get it down on paper!
I write by hand then type it up.
Love this! More and more hand writers - its such a great way to write
I started writing fanfiction back when I was about 8-9 years old by hand in notebooks. This expanded to various crazy longer novels that were a combination of my ideas and borrowed stuff (still probably today what gets posted as fanfic) but it would take up multiple 5 subject notebooks and I continued writing hours a day like that all the way through high school In my American History class in high school, the teacher liked to include essays on tests where students could score as many points as possible with how much they could write. But it couldn't just be listing facts. It needed to be an essay. On my final exam for that history class, I scored 250 points on the exam (100 was an A+). My ability to just quickly write was insane compared to anyone else in the class. My teacher was blown away how anyone could write that fast in an organized way. But I had been doing it for years.
Amazing story thanks for sharing that! That is an incredible hand writing pace - well done!
I wrote a novel by hand this year and found it easy. I had found that keying a draft into a computer didn't work at all for me. I have a typewriter and wonder if typing (typewriter) comes closer to handwriting than keying (computer). I will test this for novel number two.
Would be interesting to hear how you find a typewriter. Heating more and more people say they have written their books first draft by hand which is amazing!
I have always found journaling helpful for solidifying ideas and have seen the effect writing things by hand has had on people around me. My stepdad was a respiratory therapist, and he said he struggled in medical school. In order to retain things he learned in class, he said he not only wrote his notes, but copied them AGAIN to reemphasize to his brain it was important. My daughter also has ADHD, and can never remember anything she reads. But lately, she started writing notes in a journal as she was reading, and I’ve seen her comprehension increase! Maybe she’s not remembering it all, but at least she has a copy to go back and look at in her own words! Great video!
Thanks Coty! Really glad you enjoyed the video. I did a lot of writing by hand when I was in law school and that helped me so much to retain all the facts and case details. Thats why I am so passionate about writing by hand. Its helped me a lot.
I am disabled, with hand-eye coordination problems. I always use a computer to write or print anything, because writing it out by hand first, then rewriting it on a computer just seems like a colossal waste of time. Also, writing by hand is terribly quaint these days...Sadly, I only have over thirty years of writing experience...what do I know? You're good at making RUclips videos, though.
Thanks! Really it all comes down to what works best for you, your creative process and ultimately getting your book finished. If your current way of doing it works then keep going I say ☺️
I am partially disabled, and struggle to type. Handwriting thus allows me to write my book, and have someone else type it. Been writing for 8 years. So what?
As a published author who is a pretty good typist, I still write books in notebooks and I love it. I have the exact pens I love to use (and I go through a ton) and the exact notebooks. It's become something of an obsession at this point.
Oh really! I love this insight. I actually spoke to someone yesterday who does the same. Typing by hand has such incredible benefits for writers.
Great insight! Thank you
Very welcome!
Mr Patrick the time is so important I wish my book will be published after completion at the end of this year will be perfect if not possible by start of this year I know its Christmas time for you I can understand however its unique book for my profession ☝️✍😌
Thanks Wafa - we are looking forward to working with you.

I have subscribed. Please help Africans create authors like Western ones, and we shall shower gratitude on you. The future of African literature is bleak. To save the continent from imminent intellectual collapse, please invite friends and colleagues to read the new best African short story "Bleeding Stubs" by Besong.
You should also read "This House Is Haunted" by John Boyne. A Reddit group in love with Boyne's writing supports us financially.
Very eye-opening. Members of my magazine have read many novels with: "She was emotionally strong. Yes. That strength. That innate strength. It was a toughness she always relied on." I think just one short and solid sentence would be more efficient.
That is a good suggestion!
@@publishingpushofficial I have recommended your channel to our students. Hey, one of our sponsors, Besong, the author of "Bleeding Stubs." In our opinion, this emerging African author may be the best we have ever had. Can you please read and recommend bleaching stubs?
Anything you can do to allow our students to learn would be reciprocated.
Very useful Thankyou!
Very welcome!
So true. Thanks Patrick. You can be more creative after writing rubbish? I can be critical of my character's voice. He wouldn't say that! Would he/she? You need though to keep the flow going. Dialogue, can drive a story forward., although not, at the time, how the character should respond! There is always going to be reflection and re-write. Then, the ineffective/ inappropriate sentences and dialogue can be addressed.
Flow is the friend of a finished book. Then go back and edit later
This is the most valuable tutorial on book marketing I've ever heard, thank you!
You are very welcome and thanks for the kind words. Glad you found it valuable
This video more than helped me. Thanks alot Patrick.
You are very welcome!
I was one of your clients, in April 2021 you kindly and efficiently published my first memoir 'Private Eye Secret Spy' Sales through Amazon have been steady ever since. However, despite your regular sales videos and emails, you have failed to respond to my many requests for your claimed expertise to get my book into bookshops! Disappointed at the lack of follow-up 🙂
We'd love to help - drop us a line via our website publishingpush.com and we can definitely help you
Thank you, Patrick. Helpful comments as always. I have a friend who is a weel known traditionally published author and academic. He complains regularly about his publisher and agent. he makes 7% on each book sold. The publisher has total control over cover design. One cover showed the main character as holding a weapon in his right hand, when it should have been in his left hand! I prefer to have total control over all aspects of my writing adventure.
Thats the issue with traditional publishing. Send him our details - we'd love to help him keep 100% of NET royalties
So much information to digest. ❤
Any questions let me know
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Looking forward to this one
Thanks! Its a good one
Thanks for the tips. My updated paperback thriller A DIve Into Darkness is ready to be shared with the world.

Thanks very much Patrick for this breakdown. I first self-published in 2015. Now, have fourteen self-published books listed. Have been encouraged by good reviews over the years. In 2022, sales improved; an early novel started selling in UK. This novel previously went in USA, in 2017 and 2018. As a new author it's hard to get recognition in UK, without effective marketing and promotion. I do get listed with main retail outlets besides Amazon, but of course lack copy in actual reatail outlets. Main streamers will possibly run off a minimum 100,.000 copies for book shops presence. Glad now that I self-published. There is the copywright issue and with traditional publishing you need to get good sales to cover take - back from publisher, as mentioned. Over the years I submitted to main stream publishers, and have considered handing over copywright to traditional publishers, but have resisted. New authors, I was told, are likely to struggle, without a literary agent, who has a friend on a publishers board selection committee, who will promote his/her novel? I was seventy - years old, when my first novel was self - published. Have enjoyed self-publishing experience and, start a new novel or project well before I self publish a novel, play or anthology. That way, sales if not that good, I'm well into completion of a new nmanuscript ! amazon.com/author/grantsam and for commentary at samgrantpublicationscom.wordpress.com Best wishes, Colin (Sam Grant - author name)
Great to hear you have enjoyed the video and the self-publishing process. Its so much fun and means more royalties over all. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Superb video. Thank you! I’m currently drafting a book about my experience with Psychosis and my recovery but at a bit of a hurdle. Do you have any copyeditors you’d recommend? 😀
Thanks Mike! Exciting to hear about your book you are working on. Yes, we have lots of vetted copyeditors that we can recommend. Please drop me a message via our website publishingpush.com - mark it for my attention and I can find someone for you
This video is very well timed for me, I just finished the way of kings and I was just so excited and yet so frustrated cuz I had no idea how to outline something that complex. I remade my outlining worksheet entirely in excel (seriously). Now I can keep track of all my storylines/information flow (exposition, foreshadowing, red herrings, etc.) and I know exactly what needs to happen in each scene.
Well done! Outlining a book truly is the key to writing and incredible story.
Fascinating video. I read, and write, every day. It helps being retired, of course. As a retired English teacher, I witnessed the decline in reading at secondary school level from the 1970s to the mid 2000s. Boys proved to be the most reluctant readers, especially with the advent of gaming stations and the likes of Netflix.
Thanks Dirk! Really enjoyed making this video. We are on a mission to bring back a love for writing and reading!
Helpful, interesting and informative, as always. I do love the deliberate spelling mistake at the beginning of the video. Is it becoming a custom now? Thank you for putting this video together, Patrick. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks Dirk! I know - big oops from the editor there. We have a new editor for the next videos to hopefully eradicate these.
My understanding, and experience, is that any book will have three or four spelling errors despite the most rigorous editing process.

Great information. You can lose control over authorship with main stream.
You really can. Being an independent writer is so empowering as its your story in its truest form.
Many thanks for this, Patrick. I'm in the process of publishing my second novel with you (and a third is in the pipeline).
