    What's even funnier now, Missy Just admitted on a Weverse newsletter, that T&D rehearsal wasn't mandatory. REHEARSAL WASN'T MANDATORY.......once again Rehearsals WASN'T MANDATORY ..... So, what was the real reason why they hated on Manon? We know why, but I want to know the new excuse...

    The original actress in the Broadway production was Julie Andrews. During one of the performances, Walt Disney was part of the audience. After the show was over, Walt goes back state and meets Julie. It was this meeting that brought Julie to Disney studios and the female lead in Mary Poppins, Julie's first film role.

    it was nayoung, 21, who already went through a survival show. yoonchae, 15, was a trainee for another company (not sure if this was hybe). I don't deny that manon was not putting in the effort as much as the rest of the girls, but i don't think she would have kept it up if she got a true lashing from the management. it seems like a lot of people were irked with her, but did not really confront her aside from maybe sophia. even some of the girls who went into this program with wide eyes did not know the extent to how much a kpop trainee trains. perhaps the trainer sent to switzerland gave her an impression of training that did not align with how the one in LA was run. I may be very defensive of manon here but i just can't believe she would be intentionally disrespectful if any authority really called her out. she may have been the prettiest, but there were other gorgeous girls there as well. and cosmetic procedures are a thing in the western entertainment agency just as much as in kpop. they kicked out a 3rd place nayoung because they were afraid she would not be fully committed to the group in favor of going solo. I don't think it was so one-sided as to assign all the blame on manon i also feel like you have a very rosy idea of what goes into a kpop group and how survival groups (which field uber-successful groups in korea) are put together. i would not say that sisterhood is part of how a group is formed by the company. there is an image, a market, and positions that execs have in mind when choosing girls. if you want it bad enough you will put your differences aside with a girl you do not really vibe with. and by not showing the "reality" part of dream academy i guess the execs really wanted to see how on-stage performance would sway audiences first and foremost, seeing as that is how they will catch the attention of casual fans. throughout the entertainment industry, "live" prerecorded stages are an amalgamation of different takes and are edited. and its not that the girls are lying with their surprise at the group missions-the surprise could be for the song they were given. I'm pretty sure emily practiced buttons but was put into wannabe. on all levels the entertainment industry has never been and never will be a strict meritocracy. and while the doc brings to light pretty horrible things that were done to the girls, you cannot deny the boom of popularity the group has gone through. now that the process has been revealed, young and vulnerable artists will be more cautious going into programs like this.

      Thank you for this! And thank you for pointing out those things I got wrong - everything you said makes total sense. I'm not nearly as knowledgable about K-Pop at large as others, so I was just trying to point out things I found problematic with this particular show... but you're absolutely right and those things deserve a much larger deep dive than what I did

    • @ebreshea1337
      @ebreshea1337 2 месяца назад

      I almost entirely agree. But nowadays variety show and other offstage content has become more important to where I think members' chemistry does matter. It may not matter to the "casual" viewer, just to get their attention, but I think it really helps to make audiences fall in love with the group. Kpop thrives not just on producing good music, but producing deeply dedicated fans. I think it depends on who was making the decisions, and what their goals were with this program. Was it just to produce reality content, or was it to make a really stellar global girl group? Where did they see the group in 2 years? 5? Did they expect the group would even still exist after 2 years?

    • @angelica-ux8wh
      @angelica-ux8wh 2 месяца назад

      @@ebreshea1337 i would agree with you that the longevity of a group is something the execs had in mind when putting together the group. kpop survival show groups are temporary-so mnet needed their audience to latch onto the girls quick. it got better over time towards the later produce groups, but musical/artist identity is not the priority when pushing the group to the public. katseye already has a fanbase that isn't totally kpop fans. so i support hybe/geffen in their differed approach to the survival show in lessening the "emotional" aspect of it. regular watchers of survival shows already have an idea of an idol and how they look and how they act. (i am assuming here) but i think that the only connection to kpop that katseye is going to have is the aesthetic and overall production quality. but in terms of how the girls are gonna act, i would think they would lean more towards the western pop girlies than kpop idols that don't curse or date and are squeaky clean. Missy even said in the doc that she was worried Sophia would be too straight-laced to appeal to the western market. i think the differed approach was very intentional

    There was actually more girls that got sent home that the documentary did not show. If you go back and watch it, you can see there are a few other girls who had no screen time other than being in background. Eventually we stopped seeing them and can only assume that they were removed before the survival show started.

    I'm sorry but I partially have to disagree. Manon didn't make half the effort the other girls did, and was rewarded for it. She truly didn't deserve to end up on the show. Much less the group. The reason is because she had a big following, she was allowed to act the way she did without repercussions. Whilst when Lexi needed time to think, after 4 days if Lexi hadn't decided to leave, they had already decided to kick her out anyway. So basically, because they wanted the exposure of Manon, Manon got free passes left and right whilst the rest was held to a higher standard. This is not Manon's fault, but definitely says alot about and I sure it dropped morale for the group.

    • @ashleygriffin
      @ashleygriffin 2 месяца назад

      You're...not wrong... I didn't go into that harder in the video because I didn't want to throw someone under the bus. But I think you're right. Manon was not treated the way the other girls were and, if this was a book I would have described her as having "plot armor." I wanted to present the facts and have people make up their own minds rather than publicly get super harsh (I know, unpopular take on RUclips LOL), But I think you're right and it's not fair. I hope that Manon really did have a change of heart and things are better now, but I was really uncomfortable with how she was treated by the show and I, personally, was frustrated that she made the group after everything I saw.

    • @BetaTestaburger
      @BetaTestaburger 2 месяца назад

      @@ashleygriffin I hope so too, in the end this is what the group ended up being and I truly hope they have a good team morale now, Manon included. I respect that you collected the facts and based it off of that. In a way I really do agree. I have so much respect for Lexi because I do really think you were right about her being a shoe in for sure! For her to choose to stay true to her moral standards over fame, really shows you the type of person she is. I know what it's like when you realise you are not made for the world you have dreamt about being a part of, all of your life. It takes a lot of wisdom and self respect to catch it and not allow yourself to be swept up, blinded by the pink cloud that is being close to "living the dream". At such a young age, it's so admirable.

    I just received my first pair of Gaynor Minden pointe shoes in the mail a few days ago and sewed the ribbons and elastic on. I have not danced or worked in them much yet except to test them out. The fit is great and I don't need padding in these except a toe cap and may possibly need some tape where an area is rubbing a little near my little toe! I am surprised at how stiff the shanks are! I got the supple shank. I have very high arches and bendy feet and I tend to roll way over the box in everything but Russian Pointe/R class shoes, so I was surprised at the stiffness in these. It is still very workable but I would not want to go any stiffer in this shoe for myself. I could even go down a stiffness. I like to really articulate my feet through pointe. I do love that I am right over the box in these though! Not too far over and not too pulled back.

      @@ashleygriffin I just did a video of my feet in Gaynor Minden Europas. Its only been a half hour of playing around in them so far but I am still really liking them. I feel like they have a weird look on my foot though as the box is so straight when I am on pointe or my foot is pointed. It doesn't quite follow the natural line of my foot. But they function and fit very well. I would likely go down to a 3 box in my next ones, possibly a lower vamp but I would need to get fitted in person if I make these changes as I am not confident with the difference in 3 versus 3+ or high versus low vamp. The high vamp works fine for me, its more the aesthetics of it. I knew the 3+ box is similar to Russian Pointe Rubin and Almaz which i am very familiar with so I felt safe choosing that, but I do have slight pain in big toe with this (and did with RP Almaz and Rubin too). I am thinking I need more tapered toe area for my style of foot which compresses a lot in toes and a little in metatarsal when on pointe. For me the supple shank feels a lot like Russian Pointes at that sweet spot so I think that is ok, just bothered by that "straight" look in the box on pointe or with pointed foot. I'm hoping to get feedback from others on my video as sometimes its hard to see things when it's your own foot. I'm not that experienced with pointe shoes/work. I did four years pointe in the mid to late 1980s and the choices then sucked lol. I quit ballet from age 20 until age 45 (now 52). I had to stop pointe for a few years due to shin and problems in right metatarsal (stress reaction but not fracture). Coming back I have been more slow and methodical about it and really trying a variety of pointe shoes that are more supportive than what I started with. I like how soft GM are compared to Russian Pointe which are rock hard and brutal on the feet until they break down and in. Then I get a week in that sweet spot and then bam they are dead lol. I look forward to these lasting a while and love no breaking in!

    I suspect some of this also has to do with Nigel's firing... I'm sure that really rocked the very essence of the show. I totally agree with your video other than one point: I've always had an issue with the audience voting for the winner, as I feel that people who actually know and understand dance and dancers do a better job deciding who is the best, and I DO think the best is preferable to the favorite. I have watched every season, every episode (except season 1 as I wasn't aware of it). I've also watched this show in other countries, as well as other dance shows in other nations. I was also a dancer myself; I could have tried for a career, but I ended up dancing in local theater. This version is awful. I hate it but I watch it anyway for the same reason you do. I want the real SYTYCD back. I still watch my favorite duets from time to time, and I will never hear "Gravity" without tearing up and seeing that dance, which is still my #1. I also love to follow my favorite dancers from the show: Neil Haskell was playing King George on one of the Hamilton tours last time I checked, which tickled me. SYTYCD has done so much for the dance community; I just hope we get it back.... I'm afraid, like you, that dance will lose so much momentum without it. Oh, and all your favorites are mine too. I'm sure I have more as well!

      Thank you! I really appreciate your comment. I agree with everything you said... actually including the audience voting part... Why isn't this just a closed casting session or something lol. "Gravity" is one of my favorite dance pieces ever!

    Well this is disheartening. The new format sounds truly awful. But honestly, as someone who was a passionate fan of SYTYCD for eight seasons, the show started to fall a long time ago. I stopped watching because gradually all the diversity started to winnow out. They were choosing more and more dancers with similar look and style, many of whom were grounded in the sphere of competition contemporary. And at the same time, they narrowed the pool of choreographers they worked with. Everything started to look samey and repetitive. The dances, the way they were danced, the people who danced them. Fewer artistic risks resulting in, for me at least, fewer rewards as a viewer (and dancer myself). On top of that, the judges stopped giving nuanced, considered criticism. Suddenly everything was AMAZING, BRILLIANT, Best EVER, even when I could see things they definitely would have called out on earlier seasons. How hot is the hot tamale train if everyone is riding it every week? It just got frustrating. I got the sense that the show was increasingly geared towards hitting an algorithm rather than exploring, celebrating, and uplifting a diversity of artistic dance expression. I suspect that's at the heart of these new format changes as well. It's depressing, but the show I'm really missing hasn't been on the air for a very long time.

    Really cool video and proposal! funnily enough I ended up doing something similar in my costume design masters thesis on lolita wrt visually distinguishing between dolores and lolita, though i based mine off the 6th musical draft/revival script which I think does a lot of similar stuff as your proposal wrt filtering the story through a dialogue with the psychiatrist and having scary lighting going on every time humbert makes up some wild shit about dolly being seductive. if you're still looking for books from dollys POV that aren't awful i'd recommend roger fishbite by emily prager, molly by nancy j jones or gemma by meg tilly (this one is REALLY graphic though). theres also journal de L (french) and darling river by sara stridsberg (swedish) but i can't vouch for those because i don't speak either language.

    I personally don't want anymore adaptations of the book. People should just read the book. We don't need anymore visual representations unless it is going to be based on the POV of Dolores which is something we don't get from the book. The 64 version makes it seem so innocent and nothint happened and then she's askint for forgiveness for "cheating" 🤬 the 97 version is very inappropriate. Far too many shots of them being inappropriate and it seems dreamy and romantic but it's actually not. They make it seem like she's flirting and teasing. I also think Jeremy Irons was too good looking but in the book he says he knows he's handsome and that women do make passes at him. 😮‍💨 I just don't want to see another version where a man is calling her a monster, a demon, a temptress and he's constantly explaining away what he's doing and how he's so kind cus he gives her sweetmeats and pocket money. Only from her account would we be able to see how she was probably just fighting for survival. The part in the 97 movie where she's screaming at him to murder her like he did her mom is the saddest part. It shows how she's been traumatised by him, she's got nothing left, she's afraid of her fate and probably knows at some point he may do that because he's sick. I actually agree with Mrs. Haze running to the street and coincidentally being hit by the car. It's too easy. Maybe he's lying and he drugged her and she ran out into the street half out of it? Maybe he chased her out? But he is unreliable as a narrator. I think killing Quilty was more about getting revenge because he took Dolores, he lost his power and control of her. It again is all about him, CQ took him on a chase and basically "won" and made him look a fool. It clearly upset him that another learned man was in charge. HHs ego was bruised, it had nothing to do with him proving he wasn't as bad or avenging Dolores. It's a tragedy but for victim and both movies make out HH to be a victim when he's not.

      I agree with you! My goal was to try and present a possible adaptation that was true to the book, but I would LOVE to see an adaptation from Dolores's point of view! Thank you so much for watching and for your comment! Feel free to subscribe for more!

    It would have been lovely to have seen your Rosalind. I have directed 'As You Like It' (and 'Hamlet' for that matter) and one of my favorite lines in Shakespeare is Celia's "O wonderful, wonderful, and most wonderful wonderful, and yet again wonderful, and after that out of all whooping!" As for 'no female leads in Shakespearean tragedy', have you forgotten Cleopatra? I really feel it is her play. I am a regular with the Instant Shakespeare Company. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been doing the majority of our readings on Zoom and now we have many performances on RUclips. We shall be performing a staged reading of 'Cymbeline' at the Yorkville Branch Library this Saturday on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Please join us if you're in town!

    • @ashleygriffin
      @ashleygriffin 11 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Yes, "As You Like It" was fun - and I love that line of Rosalind's. And you're totally right about Cleopatra... I just find it interesting that the closest we get to a Shakespearean female tragic heroine is still wrapped up in a romance as her central plot... she's not a Shakespearean tragic lead in the way the men in the canon are... And that's fantastic about your company! I adore Cymbeline (Imogen is one of my favorite roles I've played) and I have a really cool directorial concept for the show.

    Thank you for a very astute and well-thought-out assessment of my favorite musical. I knew it well when I saw the 1980 revival with Richard Burton at the age of 14 (remember it like it was yesterday) and I was lucky to play Arthur myself in a high school production. Not since, though I've auditioned a few times. I've learned a few things from your video. Keep up the great work!

    Another misunderstood character is Ariel. She doesn't just change "for a man". She desperately wants to be a human and experience everything about human life, and a man is just part of the package! Like they didn't even listen to and sing her song obsessively as a kid lol

    Hi everyone! Just FYI I chose to focus specifically on American adaptations of "Snow White" because, well, otherwise this video would be five hours long, and I thought it was a good focus for this particular conversation. If you'd like me to make a follow up video about other adaptations, including non American ones, let me know in the comments! And in the meantime, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the beautiful Spanish adaptation "Blancanieves".

  • @robertadler4354

    Have you seen "Blancanieves" (2012) by Pablo Berger?

    • @ashleygriffin
      @ashleygriffin Год назад

      OMG YES! It's one of my all time favorite adaptations of the story! Especially the ending! I felt like since this video was so long I should focus on American adaptations - especially with the through line of what's going on with Disney... otherwise the video would have been five hours long LOL. there's also an odd French adaptation called "Blanche Comme Neige" that's really worth watching only for the INCREDIBLE performance of Isabelle Huppert as the Queen equivalent... I could go on and on. Let me know if you'd like me to make a follow up video! But, yes, I think "Blancanieves" is a tremendous work and more people should know about it!
