Why SNES Doom is The Doomiest Doom
5:48 This feels very much like Minecraft. Unlike Zelda1, where someone with a manual could potentially figure it out on their own, Minecraft is impossible without outside help, at least the older versions are.
Love the hat
Still my all-time-favorite game, 30 years later. I play it at least once a year.
Honestly if Nintendo just re-sold the gameboy micro just on their website with no changes it would absolutely sell out. Hell they can re-release physical NES carts with no changes and it'll sell out, I don't get why they don't just cash in on the retro collecting community. Also Imagine how crazy it would be if the re-release they gba pokemon games. So many opportunities to make so much more money but they dont do anything with it. Please Nintendo, I dont want to pay hundreds for a micro and for gba pokemon games
Hey there Bill, i was the guy next to you while we were waiting in line at the beginning. Its funny that the reason i found you, was me noticing the street-pass message on my 3DS.. kinda, heh. Really great video and i hope to meet you again next time :)
Hey Tom! Yeah it was fun meeting you on Street Pass too. We had a good weekend as you can see so hopefully we'll get to the next one. How'd you get on? Find anything good?
Great video! I actually think you made a great advertorial for RGBPi project. I also use it and am very happy tbh. The team is working on a PI5 support with ReplayOS and they are going to have a new dac device. Worth folowing, as PI5 much more powerful. RTA has many progress videos on his channel for those interested.
You younglings, always assuming your viewers are only 40! In months fewer than 12 I'll be *gasp!* 50!!! Ageism is real and active! 😄
Also, I would have left there with somewhat more swords than you did... but nice haul, nonetheless!
I could have said 40 and older, you're right. 57.3% of my audience is 35-44, but the next highest cohort is 45-54 at 28.2%. 🙂
Just starting the video and I just wanted to say: if Bergsala isn't mentioned in this video I will be very disapointed. Cheers.
Hey I would be too.
@@TheRetroSofa as someone who grew up in the late 80s, early 90s and a card carrying member of Nintendo Klubben (yes, we had plastic membership cards and everything) Bergsala pretty much made me a gamer.
@@thatswedishguy638 The story of Bergsala is incredible. I didn't want to give the full story for a couple of reasons. Firstly because it's the only part of Nintendo's European history that is pretty well covered already and secondly because I don't have anything to add to Joe Skrebels' excellent article and video over at IGN so I'd rather point people to that. That said, you can't talk about the history of Nintendo in Europe without talking about Bergsala. He almost single-handedly brought them over to Europe before they had any interest in coming over themselves. He pretty much made you a gamer in Sweden but as the man who first got Nintendo into Europe he probably had a hand in making me a gamer too. My first Nintendo was a Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch. Who knows when Nintendo would have made it to Europe if Owe Bergsten hadn't given them such a strong start on the continent.
I made my own hand drawn map of the entire game when I were a kid back in the 80s. Well I did that with many games though. But to make an exact handmade map of the entire game felt good. That says a lot of how much I loved this game.
That's awesome. It's a great game, no surprise you were into it as a kid enough to make a map like that.
Thank you for visiting us, great video, glad you had fun and some good finds :)
Thanks for a great weekend! Looking forward to the next one. :)
@@TheRetroSofa glad to hear that, it's on 5th & 6th april 2025 :)
What a fun little jaunt that was. And well done for winning a magazine you already own. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! I'm still kinda disappointed about that not gonna lie. 😅
The NES was my first console. But by the time I moved to the UK from the US as a teen, I had moved on to PC so I didn't really see a lot of this stuff when I lived there. I go through console phases from time to time, just for a bit of variety but my focus as a collector is on PC. I was good at Mario Kart 7. Shame it is offline now. The chances of me buying newer Nintendo hardware is nil at this point. All of their heavy handed legal actions have turned me off the idea of giving them any more money. Emulation has been repeatedly vindicated in US courts over and over as legal so they basically bought judgments in their favor. It really clashes with their family friendly vibe. It is also the same sort of nonsense that ruined Metallica's career for 20 years. Not good business decisions. Literally proven to increase piracy, not decrease it. And I'm not interested in getting sued for trying to set up a Mario Kart Wii or Mario Kart 7 server so I don't think I'll ever get to play MK online again. IDK, maybe I'll trade for a Switch Lite at the local used media shop. Also, I eventually played BOTW and it just didn't resonate with me. I got bored. Game was too long. I'd prefer to just enjoy classic Nintendo games. Now if Nintendo would join the 21st century and offer their games on PC, I might reconsider my opinion of them. But they won't. They wrongly think it will lead to more piracy. I just have a problem with buying a console for $3-400 that uses an APU less powerful than the one in my old Galaxy Note 4.
Check out Pretendo. As to the rest, I said in my video about fan games that Nintendo's just playing the system in the way they think suits them best. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it wrong but it's the system that's the problem and if you expect companies to have any kind of moral fibre you'll always end up disappointed.
I've never been to a con before but that actually looked pretty great. Though I'd come out of there broke too, lol. Nice haul!
Our Next RetroConvention is 5+6.04.2025, so you have time to plan a coming by :D
Thanks! I decided just this year I needed to start going to these things and this was my first. I'll definitely get to more next year, maybe get a whole calendar together. I won't always vlog them. I just realised I was spending so much time on eBay and it's much less satisfying than going out and finding things.
They will have a smaller christmas market at the same place next month (01.12.) and the entrance will be free, which is perfect if you just wanna give it a look ;)
See i did beat this as a kid in the 80s... because i had friends who played and we swapped info. Was a fun way to play
Awesome! That's the 80's Zelda experience right there!
It'll never hold up to the latest survival horror game: being alive in 2024!
Tom Lehrer's "We Will All Go Together When We Go" has become relevant again but climate change instead of nukes.
RIP Jeremy
You should try Ghosts n Goblins and Kid Icarus
I bought Kid Icarus recently. I will give it a proper go at some point.
I beat it in 87-88 13 years old. Didn't use a guide never played it in a friend group. Just by trial and error. Of course at school on breaks or lunch there were ideas being shared
That's what I mean. You could absorb hints about the games you were playing back then rather than it being a full guide online or going in blind.
Engagement.
Ta.
Wait... Turok had a story?!?
Yeah. It's in German though so I don't know what it is.
I had a file that allowed you to play Doom on a scientific calculator on my BBS back in 2016/2017. I have it around here somewhere and can dig up the files if you're interested. :D Loving the channel btw!!!
Thanks! That sounds cool. I don't have a scientific calculator though. I feel like that's the sort of thing that should be on archive.org or something, no?
Dear God, if you thought beating the first quest was bad without a walk through, you should do the second quest. When I first beat it back in the pre-internet days it took me a literal MONTH to find Level 7. 😂
I won't be jumping into it any time soon. 😉
Loved this video! I can definitely relate. My fiance had a Sega Master System with Wonderboy for about a week before it was taken away because her and her gazillion siblings would fight over it. Beyond that, she has no childhood gaming experience.. it's been a joy introducing her and her kiddo to the classics :D
Thanks! We had a great time making it. Gaming with family was never not fun and getting to share retro games with loved ones, kids especially, is really special.
I didn't get a Nintendo until 1990. But my friends and I discovered it like it was a brand new game. Working together to explore - the truths and myths traded around on the playground.. those were great days. I beat it a year or two later. The internet ruined that for people now. It's kind of like the old PC RPG games. The point was to draw a map of your travels - I had all sorts of random sheets of graph paper laying around the computer mapping out a random town, or dungeon, or whatever... the internet has everything mapped out for you - like a GPS with Eddie Murphy from Delirious narrating the navigation. I miss those good ol' days.... Great video! Subscribed!!
Thanks! That sounds like a great time and yeah, you can't quite do it now. Streaming is the closest I've managed to get where you ask chat for advice rather than looking stuff up but it'll never be the same as it was back then. I can't imagine drawing my own map for a video game these days. Even just the temptation of being able to find everything online takes away a lot of the motivation to put in the work I think.
You didn't need a big crew. Just Nintendo Power and patience which many people had because they were having so much fun trying to get through it. Having the option go online and watch walk-thrus is an option for every game these days. I would think most people only do that on the parts where they are stuck at.
Where do you define "stuck" though? Because I think as a side issue to this one of the things we've lost is the feeling of getting through part of a game after trying for a week. These days I don't think I'd give a section of a game more than an hour before declaring myself stuck and opening up my phone.
@@TheRetroSofa Most games I also declare myself stuck and look for help rather quickly. But, a new release Zelda game or something I'm really into I will sometimes give myself days.
The Gutenberg line made me think we were going to talk about how vital the manual was to the self discovery experience of TLOZ. For anyone who hasn’t played it yet, Tunic is an amazing game, very much a spiritual successor to TLOZ. It even has an in game manual that you collect pages of that reveal more information and secrets of the game.
I've quit the new Zelda after two dungeons and gone back to Tunic. I'm enjoying it more I think. Really only just got started with it though so no spoilers! Looks great though. Mysterious in a way that few modern games are.
I have very fond memories of playing the original Zelda. Plus it had a randomizer built in. When you entered the name "Zelda" and link would have a sword icon at the selection screen and the map was rearranged. I tried to have my kids play the game and they hate it. I think this video helped me understand why. Thanks for the video.
I haven't tackled the second quest yet but probably makes sense to do so before randomising. Have you found another Zelda game they like? I've been thinking about introducing my nephew to A Link To The Past.
The Legend of Zelda is not an RPG.
I think it is. Do you not think it is?
@@TheRetroSofa You cannot create your character. You have no control over your progression. You cannot make decisions that have a meaningful impact on the world. Not an RPG.
@@thatradiogeek Strong argument. In the early days it pretty much defined the action RPG with its character progression through items, exploration, and story. But y'know that was then. It's definitely not a JRPG though and I tried to be clear in this video that I was talking about a specific kind of RPG. What would you call it? Action adventure?
@@TheRetroSofa Action/adventure is probably the best descriptor. The only game in that series that came even a little bit close to being an RPG is 2, and that's only because it had an XP system. But simply having an XP system in your game doesn't make your game an RPG either.
I'm a Doom fanatic, and I enjoy this port quite a lot. I like the use of colors, and obviously the soundtrack. And unlike the Jaguar or 32x version, which also don't have Saving options, when you die on SNES Doom, you can re-start the level keeping all the items.
I think so too. It's really not the worst way to play Doom, is it? It's a good time, SNES Doom.
I got the game when it first came out and there wasn't any issue beating it. Yeah, took like 3-4 weeks to beat it over the summer, but it was totally doable (no guides, no help, etc). This was back in 1986. I was still in grade school. I completed the 2nd quest too that same summer.
Im 25 and i started collecting retro games this summer. I was always a zelda hater for a lot if reasons you described, but i saw a copy of this game at a shop and knew i had to pick it up. Something about playing it on the original cartridge is so different than the ported versions. My friend and I ended up giving a chance and we ended up immediately loving it and we went through and beat the whole game using knowledge we picked up over the years. So intead of a friend telling us at school, it was us remembering zelda references from 20 year old AVGN videos. We were strict with not using the Internet, but we did have to look up one thing to find a dungeon. Still, I feel like we did capture some of the magic of playing this game in the old days. The fact that you can enjoy it today for different reasons is a testament to its greatness.
That's really cool that you go to have the Zelda adventure with a friend in modern times. It sounds like an awesome experience and definitely like you captured the magic. It's a great game for sure but I feel like how much fun you have with it depends a whole lot on how you approach it and yours sounds pretty much spot on.
The battery in mine still works.
I played this in 87 when I was 9 and could not have finished it without my mother. She drew a full size map taking up half my bedroom with every screen of the game on one A4 paper. It had every bush, rock and enemy. She would go out and play the game burning every bush, bombing every rock, pushing every stone and that's how we found every item. I would do all the fighting and finally beat ganon. So grateful for that wonderful time adventuring in Zelda with my mother
That's a really sweet story, thanks for sharing. You were so lucky to get to collaborate with your mother and go on this little adventure together.
Hey, I stumbled upon your Zelda video and now I'm progressivly watching your other stuff (and subsctibed, of course!). These are really good videos and I liked your speach about nostalgia, philosophy (childhood, the human confition, etc....^^) Keep on the good work and thank you for making these videos! BTW: I always loved Fischstäbchen, when I was a child^^
Thanks so much! That's really nice of you. I think I still love most things I loved when I was a child whether it's Nintendo or Fischstäbchen. 😃
Completed it in the 80s. The OG game came with a map.
Sure did! That and the little notice in the game was part of the game encouraging you to seek hints outside of the game itself I think.
You can always not read the guide.
Thanks I had not thought of that.
I spent nearly a year in the hospital when I was little. The staff was kind enough to bring me a NES and many games. Zelda being the one that caught my interest the most because they told me no one they knew had completed it. I had took it as a challenge, spending most of my time exploring and making notes and maps of various things I had explored. Even down to what npcs I had spoken with said when I last talked to them. Took me nearly 8 months but I completed the game. There were no ways outside of calling the Nintendo tip line which I couldn't do from the hospital anyways. Remains my most fond/agonizing memory to this day!
Obviously being stuck in the hospital sucks but that's still a cool story. I've supported Child's Play in the past and would do so again because I bet having Zelda made your recuperation much easier. I'll see if I can do a fundraiser for them when my channel's big enough to do fundraisers. Congrats on taking the challenge and beating it. Taking copious notes is a great way of brute-forcing your way through it and I bet a really rewarding way to play.
When I got Zelda , I was floored . A Golden Cartridge to start and the game just throws you in. “ Here’s a sword , good luck . “ 😂😂😂 I played this game for hours at a time. When I finally beat it and went on to 2nd Quest I was even more amazed. Such fun memories. 😊
That's right. It gave you the feeling of adventure like nothing else.
metroid is awesome and it's good to see you enjoyed the game the way it should be played. i remember being like 10 years old and playing metroid over and over and over and just getting more badass with every run. unfortunately i can't play it anymore as the sound effects kind of haunt me now as i heard them far too much as a kid as for zelda, i kind of think it is impossible for people to play these days as we are so used to games being easy to play... but back then games were different. i still fondly remember playing castle wolfenstein and working my way around maps trying to find secret doors on every piece of wall just to find a new little room and the dopamine rush that came with it... but that sort of thing would never work in modern games especially as we don't seem to have the time anymore as we've all grown up. yet back in the day, the game set out to do what it needed to do perfectly, give us a solid challenge which took months, maybe even years just to finish and i'm sure my mother thought that she was getting her moneys worth - something which i rarely feel i get from games these days
I never know how much of the past I'm romanticising is about the tim ein which it happened or just childhood in general. Probably a mix of both. In the case of Zelda and Metroid and Castle Wolfenstein and similar games built on exploration they were made for the time they existed, expecting that the player wouldn't have full guides at their fingertips, the mystery being a great way to pad the games out with so little memory. And y'know because we were kids we had the time and the patience for that. Games now are just really big. I can beat Metroid on the NES in under an hour but getting through a full AAA release these days takes so much longer regardless of how well you know the game. I dunno, it's not worse, it's just different I think. But this is probably the only time I've made a video about a game then kept playing it after. Metroid might be short but I've definitely got at least 10 hours out of it since I started and there are many more to come. I'm still optimising my route. 🙂
I can totally relate to not bringing your Gameboy Micro outside, because it's too valuable. I even kinda feel that way with a GBA or NDS even though they aren't as high priced as a GBM. But getting something in good condition if your unit gets lost is quite a hassle and still can get pricey. Pretty much the reason why I only take Emulation Handhelds with me.
I'm going to a retro games thing this weekend and I'm still undecided about bringing the Micro. It's a flex and it's fun to play and nice to carry but I'm always so paranoid about breaking it or losing it.
I never really enjoyed Zelda 1 or 2, I think Link to the Past was the first good Zelda game. Also, the Link to the Past/Super Metroid randomizer proves that a Zelda that combined Top down gameplay with 2D platformer gameplay in some segments (like dungeons) could work.
It absolutely does work. Nintendo would return to it with Link's Awakening and again recently with Echoes of Wisdom. Neither goes quite as far as SMZ3 randomiser or even really Zelda 2 but it's definitely a space they're playing in and I'd like to see more of it. I like Zelda and Zelda 2, at least what I've played of it, but ALTTP Is probably my favourite game ever.
Another cracking video Sofa-man. Always interesting to see Nintendo from 'our' POV and how they were just a fraction late to get dominance. Oh and that red jacket 👌
Thanks a lot, Spudman! Nintendo's story in Europe is unique and interesting and I'm glad I got to tell it.
Nintendo's worst console was also its biggest success. Nintendo Wii was the only bad mainline Nintendo console that saw mass production. It was so bad that nobody bought the follow-up Wii U which was actually a phenomenal platform.
Even I skipped the Wii U back in the day but I picked one up second hand a few years back and had a great time with it. I felt like I really missed out not being able to get into all the online stuff when it was at its peak and now Nintendo's released almost every big first party game for it on the Switch there's not much to draw people back to it, which is a shame. I wish the Gamepad had a better range and battery but other than that it's a really nice controller. It didn't do great at the time but it'll be fondly remembered by people who had one. Like the Game Boy Micro!
Came for goldeneye, stayed for cat.
This is the way.
I think these days the Game Boy Micro is mostly a collectors item. I've never understood why anyone would want one. The screen is tiny, it doesn't support backwards compatibility, and doesn't work with many peripherals. Like, if you're going to make an argument for the Game Boy Advance as Nintendo's best handheld, ok, sure. But the Micro specifically? I don't get it at all.
I've explained fairly comprehensively why I want one, which includes getting around the backwards compatibility thing. I get what you mean on peripherals but I rarely carried peripherals around for my portable consoles anyway. For me it's great but your mileage may vary and that's okay.
put all the "Quality of Life" fixes into the original Zelda games and you wont have a game left... you talk a lot about not having time to play the game... but if you're loading up a Zelda game and you don't have time to play it, i question what you're actually doing or trying to achieve. these games are about solving puzzles... which just so happens to takes time we used to have a saying, if you're stuck in Zelda or Metroid then you just haven't tried hard enough, go back and try again.
Check out my Metroid video for the alternative viewpoint because people compare these games a lot but my Metroid experience was very different. That''s in part though because I took what I learned playing Zelda and made an effort to at least in part re-create the context in which these games were played in the 80's. ruclips.net/video/YfqGem5JCz4/видео.html
This video is pointless. And yes, the original came with a map and minimal instructions. Back then there were lots of printed game magazines, and all of them ran zelda walkthroughs at some point or other. The obscurity you're nostalgic about never was as an imprenetable mystery you make it out to be. I never finished it either, bugs me to this day. The game has a special place in my heart, 0 impulse to revisit it. A randomised version is even less inviting then finding time to play the original.
I think a lot of RUclips is pretty pointless to be honest. That's fine though. And hey it's your opinion we don't have to agree on this stuff but I can tell you from being there that walkthroughs were not common and having the complete solution to a puzzle in your pocket will make you feel differently about the puzzle. Given that, I think it's okay to leave this one in the past if you have fond memories of it. It's not the same game today as it was back then so returning to it will never feel the same.
