We finish the season in Montana with our last efforts to turn the tides on the Hun Gods. Peggy and I head back east and back out on the prairie to get our redemption. We end the season with some good hunts getting pheasants, sharp tails and huns, though the bird gods certainly threw us some curve balls....

Join me and Peggy as we hunt down Montana's Bonefish! Peggy proves she is far better than I am hunting down these 10lb freight trains! Unless you have done it, fly fishing for the Common Carp is as addicting as drinking a cold beer on a hot day.

Greetings! Join me and Peggy for another trip on one of our favorite Montana fishing streams. This particular day rewarded us with 2 hours of crazy fun dry fly action on a perfect day! Plus, I was able to flip my drone, but this time it happened near the ground so no need to make a 40ft pole...Aye Caramba!!

Greetings and welcome to Cast and Blast 406. Join guide Andy Roy and Peggy as we fly-fish for trout and hunt upland birds (pheasants, sharp-tails and huns) across the great state of Montana. Though our home water is the famous Missouri River, we venture into the Bob Marshall Wilderness during the summer months to experience the best dry-fly fishing on the planet. When summer turns to fall, Pegg...
Keep going with the show! Tastefully done 👍
Nice double
Thanks John. Can’t believe we are a couple of weeks away from the season opener!!! Hopefully the weather will cool down. Been scouting some areas and so far have seen a lot of birds. We just need some lower temps. It’s been hot!
Awesome
Thanks Tony! Bird season starts in a few weeks. Getting stoked!
Damn I love it , living the dream 👍
Greetings DBSD! Can’t wait for those cooler temps that we had in the video!!! Will heading your way this fall.
@@castblast4063 be interested to hear your plans 👋
Nice video
Thanks 4136! Already planning trips for this upcoming season! Can’t wait!! Hotter than poop right now though!!!!
Love the joy of you being outdoors and Peggy doing what she does best. Enjoy the days as they present themselves.
Greetings. Thanks for the kind words. It is truly a blessing to be able to spend my days hunting, fishing, hiking and whatever else outdoors with Peggy, family and friends. I never take it for granted!
Marsupial gear vest or final rise vest
I love my final rise vest, and my friend loves his marsupial vest. I honestly believe they are both good products and you would be happy with either one.
Thx for the info. Maybe we’ll cross paths! Keep the videos coming.
Anytime. Reach out this fall. Have a good summer.
Great clip. Where were you hunting. I'm live in western MT and planning my first trip to eastern MT this fall.
Greetings MT D! Not sure where to start because Peggy and I traverse the entire state all season. We had 80 days last year in the field and hunt from Ninemile to Glendive…. I use to love the Scobie area but that area gets a lot out of staters, though when it gets cold, it definitely keeps the fair weathered folks away. Plentywood is kind of the same thing. It seems the further south you go to get away from the high line spots, the less out of staters you see. Glendive and Baker are good with a ton of public land and block management places. If you stay in Baker, then you can easily shoot over to South Dakota for easy pheasant hunting. Good luck!
What camera are you using, great stuff.
Hi John. I’m using a GoPro 11. I like it except when it’s warm out. Because of all the hi def settings it uses, it will over heat and shut down after about 10 mins of recording. Then you have to let it cool down before stating up again. The new cold weather batteries work much better in cold temps compared to the original batteries. It’s not perfect but being able to record in 4K is nice. You just have to be aware of the temps you r in and record accordingly.
Geez Bob, you suck!....snorted my coffee over that one!!😂
Hi Jeff. I have to admit that also still makes me laugh. I’m fishing with Bob next week on the Missouri at our cabin… I’m pretty sure the same comment will reappear!
Jesse Owens wasn't on steroids! Open your chokes.
Still fun. Easy to miss birds on the run
Hi GH. I agree! Whether there are birds or not, being outside with Peggy is always a treat!
That scene just after the pegy potty break I need that scenery in my life once beauty and birds all in one place 👍
Hi DK. I was just there yesterday on my way to our cabin!!! How ironic!
@@castblast4063 that was such a beautiful back shot of scenery, when your legs are tired that is what keeps us going 👍
great stuff
Hi Tony. Thanks. I gave up a lot of money to live here, and don’t regret 1 penny!
Great video. Ive got a buddy at final rise, they're great people and great products
Greetings Tony. Thanks! I’m stoked with my pack. Love it!
Always looking forward to your content , thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks 16G! I hope the info is helpful to someone out there.
Final rise for the win
Sitka does have sales , I was not believing the hype and after two weeks of being soaked to the bone duck hunting, I gave in picked up the Hudson jacket on sale 50% off and am now a believer I was dry the rest of the week , the Drake jacket went in the trash 😂 PS ai have to upgrade my boots, I have a spot on my ankle that rubs and it’s bothersome and hurts and can’t find a boot that hasn’t bothered me yet , so I will go try crispi’s we will see fingers crossed 🤞
Greetings DK. You r spot on! There’s a ton of stuff out there and sometimes we just have to blaze through it to find what works. I know exactly what you are talking about regarding the ankle soreness. I can tell you I have zero discomfort with the Crispis. I hope they work for you!!
@@castblast4063 I have the thorough goods and tried for two seasons and can’t wear them all week because of the issue so I’ll be on a search again , right now I feel like a waste of money on them 🤦♂️, this Duckbum has made his way back to the uplands from a long absence so I appreciate your gear reviews 👍🥃
I have 3 pairs of Crispi boots. That Nevada pair I just finished the 4 season. Still work like a charm.
Hi Brad. Good to hear. I’ve always wondered what is acceptable as far as high end boot life. I realize many factors go into that, but will be interesting to see how long these boots last.
Glad you found a great pair of boots! It’s the foundation of a comfortable long day afield. I walk for a living (forester) so I know boot wear; Crispi (and other quality European boot makers) are the most durable, cost efficient boots.
Greetings Ron. My first job out of college was with the USFS in Utah. I remember my boots not being the most comfortable! They sure have come a long way for sure.
Andy, I believe you had pretty good interest in the boots. Here’s a few tips I picked up over the years from other foresters, military guys and various sources including Utube. 1) replace the insoles once a year; 2) watch some videos on how to lace boots for different terrain and issues (utube has some outstanding how to videos) 3) always have mole skin with you to prevent blisters 4) change socks often (lunchtime is my go to time chukar hunting) 5) have two pair of quality boots and alternate days to allow the boots to air out (dry out). I can get about ten years with good care of a quality boot (crispi, Lowa, Hanwag, Kenetrek , meindl, white are a few). Water and abrasion from rocks and briars are the enemy. In case I haven’t said it, your videos are great! Thanks and tight lines!
Hi Ron. It’s ironic on some of the tips you listed. I was just researching insoles and the how-tos on them👍
I really enjoyed this video, and the mark of a good dog owner and upland hunter is one who can laugh at himself. I'm in Seattle but I get over to MT off and on to hunt and fish with my setters. Would love to hook up to hunt huns sometime. Drop me a line next season is you are so inclined.
Hi Cliff. Thanks for the comments. I honestly believe as long as Peggy runs 20 plus miles a day… she is happy! No matter the quality of my shooting. Will drop you a line and you are always welcome.
Thank you, and take care.@@castblast4063
Great dog you have there.
Thanks Todd! Though today x-country skiing she rolled in a dead deer carcass…oh the stink!!! Never a dull moment!
Love the videos. Tell us more about Peggy. How old and where did you get her from?
Greetings Dave! Thanks for reaching out. Peggy is 4 yrs old and my ultimate companion. From bird hunting to hiking the Bob Marshal Wilderness, we r together 365 days a year. She’s a total ham at home and still acts like a puppy, but in the field, she is a machine! Believe it or not, she was a rescue puppy out of Hamilton, MT!! I took a risk getting her, but the videos don’t lie: She is a hunting machine and a great pup around the house. My good friend and hunting buddy told me one day, “She’s a million-in-one.”
Awesome video
Thanks Kevin. Much appreciated!
Awesome content
Thanks again Kevin. It was odd hunting birds for the first time without any snow this season… but we still had a great time!
Awesome video sir!
My pleasure!! Couldn’t do it without Peggy though.
enough of the "hun gods" there is only one true God that created the beautiful scenery you are blessed to live amongst and enjoy and He puts the breath in your lungs to chase that wonderful Peg all over His creation. He doesn't share, He will have no other gods before Him, Just sayin' love your vids and Peg other than that.
Well…. I truly don’t believe there are hun gods… just having fun…And I’m sure The One knows I’m kidding…😇
Any chance of getting a little direction on the area for some bird hunting in Montana? Thanks
Hi Brad. I hunt from Great Falls to Sydney and everywhere in between. There are a gazillion acres to hunt. Do you have OnX Maps on your phone? Believe it or not, I hunt a ton of public land. Block Management is another great resource through fish wildlife and parks. There is a ton of public land out east to hunt. It’s a matter of making the commitment to do the scouting since there is a ton of public land.
Really enjoy your content, thanks for sharing.
Thanks 16G! I have to remind myself, even when I forget I have my safety on, that I live in a pretty cool place and all is good!
😊
Absolutely love hunting MT, miss not getting up there as much anymore!! Just such an abundance of species to hunt for a wingshooter. I hear you on those close shots, these chokes are so tight, you have to be spot on. I went to the most open choke I can use for quail, just because they are usually so close.
Greetings Kirk. Good point on the chokes. 90% of the time the birds are in that range that benefits what chokes we r using. Maybe for me, I just need to wait a few seconds! 😆
Andy!
Is that you Billy!!???
Lebron might be the best athlete in the game but he's about 10 notchs below Bird in actually playing the game...Bird never stopped moving, always in the right spot, passing, quick as hell with a quick mind and quick release, he played chess when most others were playing checkers
Thoroughly enjoyed your video - you captured the full spectrum of a bird hunters nightmare and joy
Hello AK. You nailed it on the head perfectly! This was Peggy’s 5th season and I have never had such a rollercoaster ride with Huns like this year…there’s a perfect last day hunting in part 2 that completely showcases this love-hate relationship. Stay tuned!! Happy New Year.
Pepe le Pew , took me a couple secs to pick up on it 😂
Hi Steven. It also took me a few secs to learn what had happened! Luckily Peggy has learned to stay away from porcupines… skunks not so much….
Those misses are painful to watch so I can imagine how you felt. Are you looking at the bird or at the barrel? What chokes and shot are you using? Silver lining is Peggy gets to find more birds.
Greetings HO. Well, I try and get my sight on the bird first thing. I don’t have near the issues shooting pheasants and sharpies. I use IC and M chokes.
@@castblast4063hello good job i have hunting videos on youtube
Better a skunk 🦨 then a Porky pine 🫵🤣
True!! Ha. Unfortunately, we’ve had both. But at least Peggy appears to have learned to avoid the porkies…skunks not so much…
Enjoyed the dog work and commentary! Thanks.
Greeting Ron. Thanks! It’s never a dull moment hanging with Peggy!!
What part of Montana are you in? I was in cut bank in September.
Greetings GCD. I have a cabin in central Montana, so I hunt from Great Falls to the Dakotas border and everywhere in between.
Greetings from Colorado! Very cute dog. Always pay attention to the movements of your dog. I hunt with Labs and many a times, I have missed to see ducks in the sky, but the Labs have indicated otherwise. Happy Holidays and good hunting.
Will do. Thanks.
Hi Sikandar (Alexander) - Im an avid bird hunter based out of Colorado - lm originally from Peshawar however lived most of my life in colorado. drop me a message
Hello Ali Good to hear from you
What a shot! at 17:08 AWESOME!
Greetings Grayman. Thanks! I guess a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while…. Merry Xmas!
Great hunt and yes sometimes ya can't hit the barn door at 15 feet. LOL
Hi John. Thanks for the kind words. I’m putting together a bird video for 2023…. Stay tuned! The really good news is I’m shooting a ton better this year 🙏…. So far…
Where is the fish fry?
Incredible video Andy!! My son is trying to talk me into getting out there, looking at logistics here at work. Lol. The places in your video, were they all accessible through public land? Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Trent
Greetings Trent. Yes, all these streams are easily accessible. Obviously, the further you get away from the trailheads, you increase your chances to get away from other folks. There are definitely areas that are more busy than others…accessing The Bob near Glacier will see more activity for sure vs. the south and east areas. Feel free to email me 247fsh@gmail.com
Life threw you a curve ball. You hit it over the fence!
Greetings Dave. Thanks for the kind comments…though I certainly wasn’t feeling that way the night I was talking to the outfitter!!!
@@castblast4063 My pants would have been VERY cranky!
I'm so happy for you, Bro. Northern Arizona here. God bless America ❤
Greetings OWL. We are underway here with the 2023 season. Still a bit warm so will keep fishing until it cools. Way to many rattlesnakes still out and about. What part of N Arizona? My first job out of college was working on lake Powell as a boating officer for Utah DNR. Spent 5 yrs there before moving back to montana.
beautiful
Watching Peggy is the best part.
Morning Andrew. Just wait for the new fly fishing for carp video coming out! Peggy was going bananas chasing these monsters! It’s hilarious!
Thanks my friend. I was actually asking about dog boots. 😂
Oops. Sorry. I use Lewis vented boots if we are in a bad area. Peggy has gotten extremely good at avoiding cacti, so I don’t need then very often. These boots are bomb proof!
Thank you Sir. You just made my day. I will be shopping for some.
What dog boots do you like for MT? There seems to be a lot of short prickly pear. Thanks, Chris
Greetings Chris. I hunt in light weight Keens in the early fall, then the Crispis when the weather turns. I really don’t have a problem with the cacti’s. It’s nothing like Arizona. Any decent boot will be fine.
Great hunts, Peggy's an awesome dog!
Greetings L Luc. It was a great season last year for sure. Peggy is a ton of fun though she has decided over the last 2 weeks that lying in dead carp is a cool thing! We are adding another GSP this summer so stay tuned!
What a day! WOW! Subscribed!
Greetings RAF. Will have some fly fishing videos up soon.
